Patented Mar. 31, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to an improvement of a powder box or such like and the object of the invention resides in the provision of means for simple and effective closure, operated by the hand which holds the box.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a powder box embodying the features of my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section therethrough taken on the line AA of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is enlarged detail section, showing the lid of the powder box about to be closed.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail section, showing the powder box in the closed position.
Figure 5 is a reduced top plan-view of a different shaped powder box.
Referring to the drawing it will be seen that I provide the base of a round powder box I, Fig. 2, with a concentric ring 2, said ring being part of the base I 01' attached to it by means of screws or such like-on the back of said base 3, 4, Fig. 1, leaving a gap 5, the greater part of the circumference between the wall of said base and the ring. A hinge 6 hinges the lid 8 on the portions 3, 4 of the base. Opposite the back or hinge 6 there is provided a recess 1. There also is provided on the lid 8 a corresponding hook-shaped extension 9 which engages said recess of the ring.
It can be easily seen that by pressing the ring at the points H), II, i. e. normal to the hinge closure axis, a slight deformation of the ring will occur, resulting in a widening of the gap at the point of engagement which will allow the hookshaped part of the lid to disengage (dotted line in Fig. 3).
On the other hand, it will be quite apparent that by closing the box, the wedge-shaped part 13 of the lid will tend to increase the gap 5 at this point, thereby slightly deforming the ring until the hook 9 snaps into the recess 1 of the ring. There is furthermore provided a lip M to lift the lid after it is disengaged.
The powder-box has not necessarily to be round, as can be seen in Fig. 5. In this case the base carries a 'U-shaped frame 2 and it can 4 be easily seen that by pressing the legs of the U at the points 15-46, the arc will be deformed, thereby increasing the gap 5 and releasing the hook 9.
What I claim is:
1. A closed box, comprising: a circular dishshaped receptacle, a circular lid, means hinging said lid on said receptacle, near a peripheral region thereof, a deformable ring circumscribing said receptacle and joined to said receptacle only near said peripheral region, said ring being otherwise spaced from said receptacle to provide an air gap therebetween, said ring having a recessed portion in the inner wall thereof spaced diametrically opposite from said peripheral portion, and said lid having a projection engageable with said recessed portion.
2. A box, comprising: a dish shaped receptacle having one side open, a lid for said open side, mean hinging said lid on said receptacle, near a peripheral region thereof, a deformable ring circumscribing said receptacle and rigidly joined to said receptacle only near said peripheral region, said ring being otherwise substantially uniformly spaced from said receptacle to provide a continuous air gap therebetween throughout the major portion of the periphery of said receptacle, interengaging latching means on the inner wall of said ring spaced opposite from said peripheral portion cooperating with means on said lid for holding the lid in closed position.
