COMBINED COMB AND SCISSORS Filed Dec. 28, 1948 INVENTOR. Alf/QED Z. dozen/040' fi M QLXW Patented Feb. 24, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 29 ooMnnvnn ooMB Ann sorssons Alfred Boegehold, Detroit, Mich. Application December 28, 1948, Serial No. 67,703 Claims. (ciao-233.5)
This invention relates to a combined scissors and comb for cuttinghair.
There has been suggested heretofore the provision of a pair of scissors having a comb mounted thereonso that the combing and cutting operations used in cutting hair could be accomplished with one hand. I have found that a combined scissors and comb of this type is of real practical value only when the comb is mountedsojas to properly position the hair relative to thescissors blades while it is being out. If the comb is mounted on one of themovable blades of the scissors, the hair will be necessarily movedas it is being out and will not be cut to the" desired length or withthe evenness desired.
It is accordingly an object of this invention to produce "a "conibination'comb and scissbrs in ivhich'thecomb is mounted adjacent the blades of the scissors so" as to remain stationary when the blades are opened and closed so thatthe hair may'be positioned by, means of the comb independently of the movement of the blades.
More specifically, it is n objectfiof this invention to'mount a comb'on a pair of scissors such that ajline through the base of the comb teeth always remains substantially parallel to and adjacent the cutting line of the blades as the blades open and close. In thislmannerwthe hair can be positioned properly relative, to the moving blades and. maybe out evenly;
.In order to render the combinedmcomb and scissors useful for cutting hair, on, either side of thehead or, by a l ftnrrie t ha ded nerator; t e sc ssor o t s inventio s c nstructed so; that the co b m y e mo ted on e t er si e of the scissors bladesywith the teeth of the comb paintin i ei er an onwa wnwar dir ction. Another novel feature of the invention redes the pro on f means for a ust n the distance between the comb and the scissors blades ure 1 there is shown a pair of scissors Illhaving blades II and I2 pivoted together by means of a pivot screw and bushing I3. Blade II is formed integrally with a handle portion I4 and blade I2 with a handle portion I 5. Handleporjtions I4 and I5 are provided at their ends'with the customary finger loops I6 which enable the operator to open and close blades II and I2 with the fingers of one hand. Comb Ills mounted on the scissors II] by means of a comb hqlderJB which is fashioned as a U-shapedstrapmernber positioned between handles M'andliandhaving its legs extending around each side ofthe scissors at pivot I3. The free ends o f'holder l flfare secured to the scissors at the scissors iVQt by the screw and bushing I3 Comb lllis preferably formed with an integral shank portion I9 having a pair of transversely extendingslots 20. Shank I9 may, however, be formed as a separate member if desired and the comb mounted thereon. A pair of cap screws 2| threaded on and projecting outwardly from each leg of comb holder I8 adjacent the free ends thereof are spaced apart so as to be frictionally engageable with the slots 20 and thereby support the comb I! on the comb holder in a rigid manner.
Adjacent its closed end strap member I8 is provided with longitudinal slots 22 at each side thereof. Each of the handle portions l4 and "I5 are grooved or recessed as at 23 in which recesses are pivoted a pair of links 24. The links 24 are of equal length and are pivotally connected together at their other ends by a pin 25 which projects at each end into slots 22 so as to be guidedin a direction longitudinally of the scissors as the scissors blades are opened and closed.
Since links 24 are of equal length, it will be appreciated that the comb holder I8 is arranged in a :position bisecting the angle formed between the cutting edges of blades II and I2. As handles I4 and. I5 are separated or opened, the pin 25 will be pulled by the links 24 along slot 22 in a direction toward the scissors pivot I3 and when the handle members are closed, pin 25 will be guided within slot 22 in a direction away from pivot I3. Comb holder I8, however, remains in a position bisecting the anglebetween blades II and I2 and comb I I will, therefore, also remain stationary when the blades are opened and closed. Shank I9 and comb I! are preferably shaped so that a line through thebase of the comb teeth is parallel to andoffs et slightly in a vertical direction from a line bisectingthe angle between blades Hand I2and slots 20 are 3 designed such that the shank portion !9 may be inserted over screws 2! with the teeth of the comb pointing in either an upward or downward direction. When the scissors is to be operated with the right hand, the comb is mounted on one side of the scissors and when used in the left hand the comb is arranged on the opposite side of the scissors. Likewise, if it is desired to cut with a downward movement of the comb, the comb is arranged on holder It with the teeth pointing downwardly. If the operator prefers to cut with an upward stroke, the comb is secured on holder I8 with its teeth pointing upwardly.
It will be appreciated that the comb should be positioned closer to the blades of the scissors when trimming hair short than when it is desired to out the hair longer, and means are therefore provided for adjusting the distance between the comb and the blades of the scissors. Various constructions may be utilized for obtaining adjustability of this nature. It may be accomplished in a simple and economical manner by merely forming shank member [9 of relatively thin and resilient material and shaping comb holder l8 so that the comb will be normally spaced from the blades of the scissors the distance desirable for cutting the hair long. When it is desired to trim the hair shorter the operator simply exerts slight pressure on the scissors handles so as to push the blades against the comb, the comb being prevented from movement by being fiat against the head of the person whose hair is being out. p
In Figures 4 and there is illustrated a modified form of the combined scissors and comb of this invention. In this embodiment blade 28 of the scissors is formed integral with a handle portion 29, the other blade 30 and the other handle member 3| being pivotally mounted on blade 28 as at 32. The comb holder 33 is likewise supported on the scissors at pivot 32 and is further secured to blade 30 by a rivet 34. Since blade 33 and holder 33 are connected together by rivet 34 and at pivot 32 it will be apparent that blade 33 is fixed relative to holder 33. The comb 35 is adapted to be removably mounted on either side of the scissors blades by means of a pair of offset ear portions 36 which are struck outwardly from each lee of holder 33. The shank portion 3? of comb 35 is provided with a pair of apertures 33 spaced apart to coincide with ears 3?. Comb 35 may be arranged on either side of holder 33 by simply positioning the shank portion 3? against holder 33 so that the ears 3% project through apertures 38 and then shifting the comb longitudinally so as to engage the cars 36 with the outer face of the shank portion 3i adjacent the apertures therein.
As in the form of scissors previously described handle members 23 and Si are connected with the comb holder 33 by means of a pair of links 39 which are pivoted together at one end by a pin 43 and pivoted to the respective handle members at their opposite ends. Pin 53 projects at each end into slots 4| formed in the legs of holder '33 so as to form a pantograph arrangement between the links 39 and the handle members 23 and 3|. A spring washer 42 is positioned between blade 33 and one leg of holder 33 on pin 32 in order to maintain the necessary pressure between blades 28 and 33.
The operation of this form of scissors is similar to the scissors previously described with the exception that since blade 3!! is fixed relative to holder 33, both the comb and blade 33 remain stationary when the handle members 2e and 3| are opened and closed. In this form of the invention the line of cutting coincides with the cutting edge of blade 30 and comb 35 is arranged to be mounted on holder 33 so that a line through the base of the teeth of the comb is parallel with and spaced slightly below the cutting edge of blade 30. It will be appreciated that the scissors could if desired be used without mounting the comb 35 thereon. The scissors could be operated in the conventional manner, the blade 30 remaining stationary when the scissors handles are manipulated.
