Oct. 18, 1966 s. PENN 3,279,055
BARBERING DEVICE COMPRISING A COMB PIVOTALLY CONNECTED AND SPRING BIASED TO A BLADE Filed July 13, 1964 llllll Wm INVENTOR= SAUL PENN ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,279,055 BARBERING DEVICE COMPRISING A COMB PIV- OTALLY CONNECTED ANDSPRING BIASED TO A BLADE Saul Penn, 636 Lydig Ave., Bronx, N.Y. Filed July 13, 1964, Ser. No. 382,174 1 Claim. (Cl. 30-30) This patent is concerned with the cosmetic implement art; and more specifically describes a combination razor and comb combination.
Implements for use by abarber or other hair technician are well'known. 'Many and varied such tools are known for specific application. Two of the most common implements utilized by barbers today are the ordinary comb and ordinary straight edge razor. The straight edge razor has come into increased use of recent times in view of the desirability of razor trimming and cutting of the hair.
Ordinarily, hair technicians will waste a considerable period of time putting down and picking up the individual razor and the individual comb required for use. The hair may be combed, the comb put down and the razor picked up, and the razor utilized for cutting the hair, in separate operations. Additionally, a third instrument must be utilized for combing and cutting the hair simultaneously. This is accomplished by a comb with a razor attached at a portion thereof. Such instruments, although available, again waste some time in that the operator must switch from one instrument to this razor and comb device. Further, in that both hands may be thus utilized, the hair may not be shaped.
It a cardinal object of this invention, therefore, to provide a single instrument which may be utilized as a comb, as a razor, and as a combination comb and razor.
Another primary object of the invention set forth here in is the provision of a device as described immediately above, that may be actuated from one type of device to another while the instrument is retained in one hand, quickly. and conveniently.
Yet another object of this invention is to describe a shaving instrument that may be utilized for several applications that may be easily mass-produced in an economical manner.
A still further purpose of this invention is the provision of a combination razor and comb that may be utilized to simultaneously comb and cut the hair.
Yet another purpose is to provide a razor and comb instrument that may be utilized with but one hand.
With these objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will appear in the following specification and recited in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which the same reference numerals indicate the same parts throughout the various figures and in which:
FIG. 1 is a view in perspective of one embodiment of the instant invention with the comb and razor shown in their touching positions whereby the comb may be utilizedto assist in and as a gauge for the cutting of the hair by the razor.
FIG. 2 is a perspective view corresponding to FIG. 1, but showing the parts in their separated positions wherein the comb and the razor may be utilized separately.
Referring to the drawings, wherein there is shown an exemplary embodiment of the invention, there is illustrated primarily a comb A and a straight razor B such as is commonly utilized for the cutting of hair.
The comb A and the razor B may be substantially of a conventional type, and when separated as shown in FIG. 2, may be utilized substantially in a conventional manner. Thus, as will be seen in FIG. 2, when the parts are separated, the razor B will have an edge extending downward which may be sharpened and utilized for cutting or trimming of the hair. The opposite end of the razor B will be integrally formed with an extending arm 12 which will terminate in a first hinge portion 14 pivotally attached to a pin 15.
The comb A will have, in the usual manner, downwardly extending teeth 20 which may be utilized .to straighten or position hair or the like. The comb A is attached to an extending arm 22 similarly terminating in a hinge portion '24 pivotally enclosing the pin 15. Thus, the pin 15 will pivotally join the hinge portions 14 and 24 and thus, the razor B and the comb A. This will permit the comb A and the razor B to be rotated relative to each other in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the teeth 20 of the combA and of the edge 10 of the razor B. The pin 15 operating through the hinge portions 14 and 24, however, will serve to prevent relative movement of the comb A and the razor B in any direction but the pivoting mentioned immediately above.
A spring 30 will be retained atone end 31 by a rivet 32 to the extending arm 22 of the comb A. The opposite end 34 of the spring 30 may be similarly retained to the extending arm 12 of the razor B or in the alternative, may be freely suspended at that end to merely urge against the said extending arm 12. The spring 30 when in the relaxed condition, will cause the extending arms 12 and 22 and thus the comb and the razor to separate to substantially the position shown in FIG. 2. When the parts are in that position, it will be apparent that the comb A and the razor B may be used independently respectively. Thus, by tilting the razor B slightly upwards, the comb A will be utilized in the normal manner to comb the hair, prior or after the cutting of the same. correspondingly, when the parts are in their position as shown at FIG. 2, the razor B may be tilted downward and the comb A upwards, and the razor B may then be utilized either to cut the hair or for any similar purpose such as shaving. It will be obvious that the comb A and the razor B will normally be in the position as shown in FIG. 2, in that the compression spring 30 will tend to retain the parts in this position. It will be realized, of course, that the razor may operate with the usual guard.
However, the barber or hair technician may when desired, with no lost motion or time, urge the razor B and the comb A together against the urging of the spring 30, until the parts are in their position as shown in FIG. 1. When'in that position, the razor B and the comb A may be utilized together to simultaneously comb and straighten the hair and to trim the same with the razor B. Thus, the razor B may be utilized to trim and style in a convenient manner. Additionally, when utilized in this manner, the comb A will serve to insure that the individual strands of hair are straight at the moment of the cutting by the razor B and additionally acts as a guard to insure that the razor B does not inadvertently out too much hair or injure either the barber or the person being operated on (even when the razor guard is omitted as shown).
Thus, it will be apparent that the one instrument shown in the drawings may be utilized for the three purposes of cutting, combing or simultaneously combing and trimming. Additionally, in that the instrument is held in one hand, and retained open by a spring but may be closed by the same one hand, the operator may move from one operation with the instrument to the other, without any lost movement or time. Additionally, one hand is always free for shaping the hair.
Further, the relative simplicity of the components insures that they may be readily mass-produced in a convenient and economical manner.
While there are above disclosed but a limited number of embodiments of the structure and product of the invention herein disclosed, it is possible to produce still other embodiments without departing from the inventive con- 3 cept herein disclosed and it is desired, therefore, that only such limitations be imposed on the appended claims as are stated therein, or required by the prior art.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as, new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
A combination razor blade and comb for use as a barbering instrument, comprising, a razor blade having an integral extending arm, and a comb having an integral extending arm, saidextending arms being pivotally connected in such manner as to hold the respective surfaces of the said comb and razor blade in like vertical planes, said arms having pivot means, said pivot means including a pin, the longitudinal axis of said pin being in a plane parallel to the respective surface planes of said comb and razor blade, and spring means having one end connected to the inside surface of one arm and the other end, adjacent said pivot means, urging against the inside surface of the other arm, thereby normally urging said comb and razor blade apart; whereby said razor blade and comb may swing apart, about said pivot means, in a plane transverse to the planes of the perspective surfaces 4 of said comb and razor blade, thereby enabling the operator to utilize said instrument and to selectively use the comb to comb the hair and the razor blade to shave hair, when the two are apart, and, to use the combination of comb and razor blade to cut hair when the two are in close juxtaposition, and, when cutting, .to vary the space between said comb andrazor blade, by varying the hand pressures against said spring, thus to be able to guide the cutting of hair to any desired length.
