SOFA BED HINGE Harry Ragnsky, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, assgnor to Progress Spring Bed Limited, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Application December 10, 1948, Serial No. 64,513
also connected to end members of the sofa bed frame and support the seat and back sections for swinging movement from a sofa-forming position-to a bed-forming position and vice versa, the seat and back hinge members of each hinge connection being provided with complementary locking devices which serve to lock the seat and back sections against relative movement in their sofa-forming positions but permit the seat'section to be moved relatively to the back section to a horizontal bed-forming position after the seat and back sections have been moved as a unit to an intermediate hinge unlocking position in which the backA section is disposed in a horizontal bed-forming position with -the seat section in a substantially vertical position.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide improved hinge connections of the type referred to which are simpler in design and cheaper to manufacture and install than the hinge connections heretofore employed for supporting the seat and back sections for movement from a sofa-forming position to a bed-forming position and vice versa.
Cther objects, advantages and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of one of my improved hinge connections as it appears looking toward the inner side. In this view the seat and back members fastened together by therhinge connection are shown in cross sectiontogether with one of the end members of the sofa bed frame to which the hinge connection is. also fastened, the hinge connection and the seatand back sections of the sofabedbeing shownin their sofa-forming position. i
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. lbut showing the seat and back sections transposed to a position in which the back `section is disposed in :a horizontal bed-forming position while the seat section is disposed in a vertical position.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating the manner in which the seat section is movable from the vertical position shown in Fig. 2 to an inclined hinge unlocking positionto permittsubsequent independent movement of the seat section to a bed-forming position in horizontal alignment with the back section.
Fig. 4 is a view showing the seat .and back sections in their horizontally aligned bed-forming position.
Fig. 5 is an inside elevation of the hinge connection per se as it appears in the absence oi the latch actuating plate and control bars shown in the preceding figures.
Fig. `6 is a plan View of the latch actuating plate shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive.
Fig. '1 is a sectional view taken substantially along the section line 1-1 of Fig. 1.
In these drawings my improved hinge connectionis designated in its entirety by reference numeral 4. It comprises a back hinge member 5 having one end fastened to the back section 6 of the sofa bed and a seat hinge member 1 havn ing one end fastened to the seat section 8 of the sofa bed. The remaining ends of the hinge members 5 and 1 are pivotally secured together in overlapping relation by a pivot bolt 9 having a head I0 at one end and a clamping nut II at the opposite end. i I
The hinge members 5 and 1 are supported on an end member I2 of the sofa bed by contr-ol bars I3 and I4 and control bar supporting plate I5. The upper end of control bar I3 is fastened to the hinge 4 by the pivot bolt 9 and is interposed between the head I0 of the bolt and a washer I6 engaging the outer side of the pivotally connected end of hinge member 1 as shown to advantage in Fig. '1. The lower portion of control bar I3 is intermediately pivoted at I1 to supporting plate I5 which is suitably fastened to the end member I2. The upper end of control bar Iiil is secured by a pivot I8 to the back hinge member 5 and has its lower portion intermediately pivoted at I9 to supportingv plate I5. `The lower ends of control bars I 3 and I4 which extend below the pivots I1 and I9 are connected together by a coiled tension spring 2 I.
A hinge locking latch 23 is intermediately pivoted to the inner side of theback hinge member 5; by a suitable pivot connection 24 which is located below the pivot bolt 9 and at a point between the pivot bolt and that end of the hinge member 5 which is connected to back section 6. It will also be noted that the latch pivot 2x1 is located relatively close to the end of the latch nearest back section 6 and thatthis end o f the latch is provided with a notch 25 receiving therein one end of a bowed spring 26. The other end of latch spring 26 Ais engaged in av hole 21 provided in hinge member5'.. The'end or latch 2 3 remote from back sectionli` is providedwith a recess 29 in which a locking stud 30, carried by 2. A hinge as set forth in claim 1, including a stop pin Xed to the latch carrying hinge member and engageable with the latch to limit swinging movement thereof in one direction.
3. A hinge as set forth in claim 1, in which the stud carrying member is provided with a further stud engageable with the pivoted end of the latch carrying hinge member to limit relative movement of the hinge members in either direction about their pivotal connection.
4. A hinge as set forth in claim 1, including a plate covering said latch and rigidly secured to the stud carrying hinge member for movement therewith, said plate being pivotally connected to the latch carrying hinge member by the pivotal connection between the two hinge members.
5. A hinge of the character described, comprising a pair of hinge members, a pivot connecting said hinge members, a plate rotatably mounted on said pivot, a pair of studs carried by one of the hinge members and tted in openings in said plate to hold said plate against movement about said pivot independently of the stud carrying hinge member, a latch member intermediately pivoted to the other hinge member and positioned between the said other hinge member and said plate, one end of said latch being formed with stud receiving recesses in which one of said studs is engageable to lock the hinge members together for unitary movement, the other of said studs constituting a stop engageable with the pivoted end of the latch carrying hinge member to limit relative movement of said hinge member in either direction about said pivot when the latch is shifted to a hinge releasing position, a spring connected to the latch and to the latch carrying hinge member and urging the latch to a hinge locking position, and a latch releasing stud carried by said plate and movable into latch releasing engagement with a portion of the latch located at the side of the latch pivot remote from the stud receiving recess of the latch.
6. A hinge. as set forth in claim 5, including a latch engaging stop pin fixed to the latch carrying hinge member and engageable with the latch to limit swinging movement thereof in one direction.
7. A hinge of the character described, comprising a supporting member, a pair of hinge members, a pivot pivotally connecting said hinge members, a control bar pivoted to said supporting plate and having one end pivotally secured to the hinge members by the pivot connecting said hinge members, a second control bar pivoted to said supporting plate and having one end pivoted to one of the hinge members at a point spaced from the pivot connecting said hinge members, a spring biased latch intermediately pivoted to one of the hinge members and provided with a recess at one end for engagement with a locking stud carried by the other hinge member, a latch releasing stud carried by the last mentioned hinge member and engageable with the latch at the side of the latch pivot remote from the latch recess to swing the latch to a hinge releasing position in response to a predetermined relative arrangement of said hinge members, and a spring acting against said control bars and normally tending to swing them about their pivotal connections to the supporting plate.
