ADJUSTABLE CHAIR.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, JERROLD F. WALTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sturgis Michigan, have invented certain new anc useful Improvements in Adjustable Chairs, of which the following is a speclfication.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable chairs, and this application is a continuation of my application for Patent Ser. No. 486,470, filed March 29, 1909.
The objects of this invention are: First, to provide a chair which is very effective in operation and which may be very conveniently knocked down and packed for shipment. Second, to provide an improved detachable depending arm from the chair back which may be readily disposed of in packing the chair and which shall be very strong and effective in use and be very simply assembled.
Further objects, and objects relating to details of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow. 1
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the followingv specification. The invention is clearly'defin'ed and pointed out in the claims.
A structure constituting preferred embodimentsof my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, form- .ing a part of this specification, in which:

In the drawing, all of the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
,Referring to the lettered parts of the drawing, the chair is made up of a bottom frame 1 supported by suitable front posts 2 and rearposts 3, and carrying arms H providedwith a cross bar 5 at the back of the chair bottom. A suitable cushion 6 is provided resting on' spring structures 7 within the bottom frame. The adjustable back, made up of side bars 8 with bottom bar 9 and cross slats 9, is disposed between and'suitably hinged to the back posts 3. The

A downwardly projecting back arm is constructed. of a round straight bar 17 in-. serted in the holes 18 through thebottom cross bar 9 and the slats 9, 9, see particu- V larly Figs. I, II and IV. This bar is an easy fit and is held up by transverse pin 19 engaging a plate 20 which is perforated to receive the arm. The plate 20 is slotted at 21 to permit the pin 19 to be inserted and turned into the engaging position, as clearly appears in Fig. IX. The plate 20 is disposed beneath the bottom bar 9. and is supported by suitable screw 2222 in the under side of said bottom bar 9. The lower end of this bar 17 is slotted at 17 to connect with the link 23, which is pivoted to the slide by pivot 25", which is carried on a bottom board 24. The link 23 is made detachable. It is preferably detachable from theibar 17 but serves its purpose if detached at the other end.'
Modifications of structures for holding up the back arm or bar 17 appear in Figs. 11 and 12. The cotter pin is shoWn inserted through the bottom cross bar 9 of the back through the perforation in the bar 17, which will support the same and prevent-its rotation. The modification of the supporting plate is also shown, consisting of the L- shaped piece 36 secured to the bottom bar 9 by certain screws, the .horizontal portion being disposed a little below the under side of the cross bar 9 and perforated for the bar 17 and notched at 37 to permit the pin 19 topass and turn into engagement there- I with.
The slide 25 is controlled by a clutch 26 which is operated by the push rod 26 provided with the push button 26 in any well known way. Preferably these parts are constructed according to the structure appearing in the patent application of myself and William Favorite, filed April 25th, 1910, Serial Number 557 ,47 9. These clutch parts are supported onthe bottom board 24 run- .ning from front to rear of the chair, which is slotted at 24' to permit freedom of movement ofthe said downwardly depending arm 17. The back bar 5 is notched at 5" to accommodate the same. Springs 27 connect the front of the link 24: to'the back part of the chair bottom and act to throw the back forward.
The, hinge members are specially constructed, as will be seen by an inspection of Figs. IV, V, VI, VII and VIII. There is a hinge at each side of theback. The pivot plate 11 is provided with a projecting pivot pin 10, with T-head 30, and an oppositely projecting stud 28 engages the back side bars '8 in suitable holes 29 therein. A. single screw 31 thus serves to retain this hinge member in place. Across bolt 32 is disposed throughthe back side bar and prevents split- 7 ting thereof. part being offset to permit easy adjustment of the pivot 30 of the pivot member of the hinge, Screws 12' are disposed through the vertical part into the post 3, and a screw 12" is disposed through the horizontal part,
thus firmly retaining the same and also .strengthening the joint between these parts.

' combination of an adjustable detachable "back, with a separable hinge joint for securing the same to the body of the chair, a detachable arm disposed in an 'upright'bore in said back, means for supporting the same detachably in position comprising a laterally projecting pin on the said arm and a H plate on said back positioned toengage the said pin when the arm is turned to normal position, and detachable means connected to said arm for adjusting the angle of said back, coacting as specified.
