Description

1952 F. w. KNOWLES DRY SHAV-ING DEVICE Filed Aug. 4, 1947 Z/vra/ n F /Cwuus:
Patented Dec. 30, 1952 UNITED STATES DRY SHAVING DEVICE Frederick Wilfred Knowles, London, England, assignor to The Wilkinson Sword Company Limited, London, England, a British corporation Application August 4, 1947, Serial No. 765,821 In Great Britain July 1, 1944 Section 1, Public Law 690, August 8, 1946 Patent expires July 1, 1964 i Claims.
This invention relates to shaving devices of the type known as dry shavers, and has for its object so constructing such shavers that the shaving element can be applied to the surface to be shaved without much rubbing or sliding over the skin, to avoid causing soreness and irritation of the skin. The present invention provides for rolling, circumgyrating, circumvolving and rocking motion of the shaving element over the surface to be shaved. In hitherto known devices, such motion of the shaving element was dlfflcult because the part adapted to touch the surface to be shaved was not arranged to be easily movable in several directions in relation to the handle. The present invention links the part that touches the surface to be shaved by a movable joint with the handle.
A dry shaving device according to this invention is suitable for manual operation, and comprises in combination an operating handle, a support for a reticulated guard plate, means comprising a ball joint for operatively connecting said handle to said support, whereby universal movement is provided between said handle and said support, a reticulated guard plate mounted on said support at the end thereof remote from the ball joint, and a cutter device connected to said operating handle and pressed against the inner surface of said guard plate by a spring.
The accompanying drawing shows a sectional view of a dry shaving device constructed according to this invention. A perforated shield l of thin steel having the form of a hollow spherical segment is soldered with the edge of its concave face to a tubular metal housing 2. The housing 2 is adapted to form a ball-joint with the handle 3. The handle 3 is fitted on its lower extension with a pin 4 on which a spring 5 and a blade 6 are located. The blade 6 consists of thin steel in the form of a hollow spherical segment, with a hole to lit the pin 4, and a sharpened circular edge which is held in contact with the shield I by the action of the spring 5.
When the shield I is pressed with its convex face on the surface to be shaved, and circular, spiral or to-and-fro motion is applied to the handle 3, the ball joint permits the shield I to roll, circumgyrate, circumvolve and rock over the surface to be shaved. During such motion, hairs projecting through the perforations in the shield I are liable to be nipped or sheared by the blade 6.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A manually operated dry shaving device comprising, in combination, an operating handle, a reticulated guard plate, a support for said reticulated guard plate, means comprising a ball and socket joint for operatively connecting said handle to said support, whereby universal movement is provided between said handle and said support, said reticulated guard plate being mounted on said support at the end thereof remote from said ball joint, and a cutter device connected to said operatinghandle so as to 00- operate with the inner surface of said guard plate.
2. A manually operated dry shaving device comprising, in combination, an operating handle, a reticulated guard plate, a support for said reticulated guard plate, means comprising a ball and socket joint for operatively connecting said handle to said support, whereby universal movement is provided between said handle and said support, said reticulated guard plate being mounted on said support at the end thereof remote from said ball joint, a cutter device mounted on said operating handle so as to co-operate with the inner surface of said guard plate, and spring means for pressing said cutter device on to said guard plate.
3. A manually operated dry shaving device comprising in combination a handle formed with a spherical portion intermediate its ends, a tubular casing, a perforated guard plate secured to one end of said tubular casing, said tubular casing having at its other end a spherical socket in which said spherical handle portion is housed and retained, whereby one end of said handle projects into said tubular casing, and at least one blade carried on said projecting end of said handle, in contact with the inner surface of said guard plate, the spherical engaging portions of said handle and said casing providing for universal movement of said handle in said tubular casing.
4. A manually operated dry shaving device according to claim 3 in which said perforated guard plate has a convexly curved outer surface and a concave inner surface, and, further, in which the blade is slidably mounted on a pin secured to said handle, and further comprising a spring mounted on said pin and pressing said blade into contact with said concave inner surface.
