This invention relates to improvements in mechanical razors, and more particularly to the construction of the cutting members thereof.
The improvement disclosed herein has to do with the cutter of a well known dry shaver which is movable radially with respect to a semi-cylindrical head as shown in the patent to J. Bruecker, 2,031,694, issued May 25, 1937. As disclosed, thecutter member is a flat blade having a narrow cutting edge which is oscillated across the arcuate rear surface of an outer perforated plate. This blade structure has the disadvantage of pulling the hair and scraping the skin so that the hair clippings aregreyish with more skin than hair contents.
Primarily, the object of this invention is to obviate this result by providing a cutter with a blade having edges extending substantially con centric with the arcuate outer cutter and provided with cutting edges that perform a natural shearing of the hairs without'pulling or scrapmg.
Another object is to provide a holder for two companion blades which are so positioned as to permit the use of a longitudinal reenforcing rib for the shear plate.
A more clear conception of the construction, operation and further objects of the invention may be had from the accompanying specification, when read in conjunction with the attached drawings, in which Fig. 1 represents a fragmentary side elevation of a shearing head embodying the invention;

In the drawings, a razor similar to that disclosed in the above patent is shown in part, in which 20 is a casing or handle in which is secured a shearing head 2|.
Within casing 20 is enclosed any well known type of electric motor (not shown), the rotating shaft 23 of which has an 'eccentrically disposed pin 24, with a round head, secured thereon.
Shearing head 2| comprises a semi-circular outer shear plate 26 detachably secured in place by spring pressed plates 22. The plates 22 are pivotally mountedon casing 20. The shear plate 26 is formed with a plurality of perforations 21 and has on its rear surfaces supporting webs 28. I
Ablade carrier 29 is formed as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 with trunnions 30 which; are journaled in bushings 3| mounted in the casing '20. The extreme ends 32- of trunnions 30 are squared to receive arms 33 which are connected by two bars 34 adapted to be engaged by the pin 24. The blade engaging portion comprises two fingers 35- provided with a slot 36 adapted to be engaged by a pin 31 on the blade 40. Mounted in the base, of the holder 29 is a spring 4| which may be ad- J'usted by screw 42.
In assembling the razor, the blade 40 is in serted in the blade holder 29 with the pin 31 in the slot 36. The shear plate 26 is then forced down compressing the spring 4| until the upper edges of plates 22 engage notches 43 in the shear plate. To remove the shear plate the plates 22 are pressed inwardly by bearing on the lower ends, thereby rocking the upper portion out of engagement with notches 43. V
Inoperation rotation of shaft 23 is converted into oscillating motion by the engagement of pin 24 with the bars 34 which rocks the blade holder 29 and blade 40 in the bearings 3|.
In order to improve the shearing action of cutter the blade 48 is formed as shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8. In Fig. 5 the metal is bent into a V-shape and the ends are bent at right angles to form blades 45 which have a bevel ground thereon to form a cutting edge. In Fig.- 6 the blade 40A is split near the top and bent at right angles to form blades 45. In Fig. 7 the shank and blades of cutter 43B are formed by stamping or by other well known method. In this form,
however, the cutting edges are escalloped as shown in Fig. 8 to provide a more efiicient shearing action with the perforations 21 in the shear plate. In each case the blade 40 is cut out at 41 (Fig. 3) to avoid the reinforcing webs 28 in'the outer cutter.
face of the shear plate, and accordingly the pressure of the spring means 4| is concentrated at the cutting edges. Thus, as the cutting edges slightly wear away, there will be no tendency for the intermediate portion between the spaced blades 45 to hold the cutting edges out of effective engagement with the shear plate.
In Figs. 9 and 10 is disclosed a modified form of blade holder 50 which is similar in construction to holder 29 except that fingers are provided for two blades carried at approximately 45 to each other. Two springs 5| are mounted in each arm and adapted to urge the blades 40B toward the shear plate.
With the two blades 40B mounted at 45 to each other, each blade will sweep over one half the arc of shear plate 26 thereby giving a more eflicient and cleaner shave. This construction permits the use of a longitudinal reinforcing web 53 which extends the length of the inner surface of the shear plate 26.
While I have described what I consider to be highly desirable embodiments of my invention, it is obvious that many changes in form would be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and, I, therefore, do not limit myself to the exact form herein shown and described, nor to anything less than the whole of my invention as hereinbefore set forth, and as herematter claimed.

A dry shaving head comprising an outer shear plate formed with cutting elements, a movable carrier, and a folded piece of suitable material mounted in said carrier, the end portions of said folded piece of metal being bent outward in opposite directions to provide spaced registering cutting surfaces engaging said shear plate.

A dry shaving head comprising an outer semi-cylindrical shear plate having perforations forming cutting elements, a carrier movable about a pivotal axis concentric with said shear plate, a cutter bar mounted in said carrier against movement relative thereto in the direction of movement of the carrier, oppositely disposed blades formed at the outer edge of said cutter bar by separated portions projecting laterally in opposite directions from the bar, and spring means acting between said carrier and said cutter bar to simultaneously press said blades into engagement with the inner surface of said outer shear plate.
4. A dry shaving head comprising an outer semi-cylindrical shear plate having perforations forming cutting elements, an inner cutter movable about a pivotal axis concentric with said shear plate, said inner cutter being formed by a fiat metal strip folded upon itself to form a substantially V-shaped member, and oppositely disposed blades formed by outwardly bent end portions of said V-shaped member.
