Patented Dec. 23, 1952 'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in tractor road scraping apparatus, the primary object in view being to provide road scraping apparatus of the scraper blade type adapted for attachment to the hydraulic power lift mechanism of tractors of commerce for raising and lowering of the scraper from and into operative scraping position by said mechanism, as occasion may require, and which is designed to provide for lateral swinging of the scraper into selected oblique positions relative to the path of travel of the tractor, to facilitate scraping under different operating requirements, and also for reversing of said scraper to adapt the apparatus for use as a bulldozer when the tractor is backed.
Other and subordinate objects, within the purview of my invention, together with the precise nature of my improvements will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of my improved road scraping apparatus in a preferred embodiment thereof attached to the hydraulic power lift mechanism of a tractor;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in plan of the same, partly broken away;
' Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in rear elevation of the same;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in plan drawn to a larger scale;
Figure 5 is a detailed view in transverse section taken on the line 55 of Figure 2 and drawn to a larger scale; I
Figure 6 is a view in vertical transverse section taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 2 and drawn to a larger scale;
Figure 7 is a View in perspective of the turntable drawn to a smaller scale.
Describing my invention in detail, with reference to the drawings by numerals, my improved road scraping apparatus has been shown, for the purpose of illustration, as attached to the hydraulic power lift mechanism of a well-known type of tractor illustrated conventionally, the numeral I designating the rear traction wheels, 2 the rear difierential housing, 3 the usual pair of rear power lift side arms vertically swingable on pivots 4 on said housing, 5 the usual hydraulically operated cranks connected by links 6 to said arms 3 to raise and lower the same, and I the usual pivoted rocker on said housing 2 for operating a spring pressed plunger 8 under overload on the power lift mechanism to cause said fore, a detailed showing and description thereof a is not deemed to be necesary to a proper understanding of the same and the relation of my improved apparatus thereto. For a detailed disclosure of such power lift mechanism, reference may be had to U. S. Letters Patent No. 2,118,180.
According to my invention, a turntable 9 is provided between the rear ends of the side arms 3 comprising an annular fiat band rim It with a diametrical bar-like web II adapted to extend transversely of said arms 3. A mounting for the turntable 9 suspends the same from the rear ends of said arms 3 for tilting vertically about an axis transverse to the path of travel of the tractor, and for oscillation about the vertical axis of the turntable.
The mounting for the turntable 9 comprises a transverse bar I2 overlying said web II diametrically of the turntable 9 and to which said turntable is pivoted for oscillation, substantially horizontally, by a king-bolt I3 extending through said web II and bar I2 in the axis of the turntable. Pairs of cross-bars I4, I5 welded, as at I 6, on top of said bar I2 surmount the same upon opposite sides of the king-bolt I3 for a purpose presently seen. A pair of aligned bars Il spaced apart end to end upon opposite sides of said king-bolt I3 are welded, as at I8, on top of the pairs of cross-bars I4, I5 parallel with the bar I2 with outer ends fitted between the rear ends of the side bars 3 and pivoted thereto by horizontal bolts I9. As will be seen, the described mounting for the turntable 9 provides for clear access to the king-bolt I3 for tightening or other purposes. A pair of scraper carrying arms 20 with downturned rear ends 2| extend rearwardly of said turntable 9 beneath the same and from opposite sides thereof and opposite ends of said web II.
Means are provided for oscillating the turntable 9 about the king-bolt I3, as follows. A bifurcated head block 22 above the turntable 9 is swingable laterally on a clevis 23 to which said block is pivoted by a bolt 24 axially aligned with the turntable 9. The clevis 23 is pivoted by a transverse bolt 25 for vertical swinging on the rear end of a turnbuckle compression rod 26 having its front end pivoted by a transverse pin 21 to the rocker 1 so that said rod 26 is vertically swingable. A pair of connecting bars 28 extend downwardly and forwardly from opposite sides of the head block 22 to the front of the rim IU of the turntable 9 and are secured thereto, as
3 at 29. A pair of similar bars 30 similarly extend from opposite sides of said head block 22 to the scraper carrying arms 2|! and are secured thereto, as at 3|, with upper spaced apart ends 32 extending above said block 22. Bolts 34 secure said bars 28, 30 to the head block 22.
A hand lever 35 is pivoted by a bolt 35 be-- tween the upper ends 32 of the bars 39 to extend forwardly within easy reach of the drivers seat, not shown, of the tractor, or to be swung vertically intoa rearwardly extending position, said lever in either position providing for oscillating the bars 23, 30 and the head block about the bolt 24 to oscillate the turntable 9 about its axis as will be clear.
As will be seen, the described means for oscillating the turntable 9 provides for the turnbuckle compression rod 28 functioning together with the side arms 3 in the manner of a'parallel link motion for maintaining the turntable 9 substantially horizontal at "all times. The turnbuckle construction of the compression rod 25 provides for lengthening or shortening of said rod'to tilt said'turntable sabout the bolts 19 and relative to the side arms 3 out of the horizontal as may be required.
Locking means provide for retaining the turntable '9 in different set oscillated positions and will'now be described. A pair of horizontal lock bolts '36'are slidably mounted at opposite sides of the'turntable 9 in the pairs of cross-bars I4, to extend along relatively opposite sides of the bar I2 for projection into 'ciroumferentially spaced apertures 3'! in the rim Ill of the turntable 9. Coil springs 38 suitably arranged on the lock bolts'% to bear "against collars 39 on said bolts act to project said bolts intoapertures 37 registered with said bolts.
A horizontal latch bolt retracting lever fill is pivoted in horizontal position on the king-bolt I3 to extend rearwardly over the bar l2 and be swung horizontally, and is operatively connected to inner ends of said latch bolts -36 by bolts 4| and slots '42 so that swinging of said lever 48 in one direction will cause retraction of the latch bolts 36 and unlock the turntables. A pull cable 43 isconne'cted to the latch bolt'retracting lever 40 "and trained'around a pulley 44 to be extended forwardly to within" easy reach from the drivers seat of the tractor. The pulley 54 may be mounted on an 'arm dil extending rearwardly from one of the'b'ars A'double edge, concave, scraper lliis provided on the scraper carrying arms 29 and is preferably formed of twin blade sections 41 bolted, as at &8, to a concave face channel beam 49. Pairs of 'bars 50 extending from plates 5|, bolted as at 52, to the channel side of said beam d9 straddle the rear ends 2| of the scraper carrying arms 25 and are pivoted thereon, as at 53, so that the scraper 46is swingable under said ends 2| into a forwardly facing position in front of said ends, for scraping when the tractor is driven forwardly, or, into a rearwardly facing position in the rear of said ends 2|, as shown by dotted lines, in Figure 6, to function as a scraping bulldozer when the tractor is reversed. In either of the described positions of'the scraper 46, 'right'angled edge lugs 54 on opposite side edges of the channel beam 49 engage the ends 2| of said arms 26 and establish the position of the scraper.
Manually releasable latch means is provided for automatically latching the scraper 46 in either of the describedpositions thereof as follows. Apair of substantially segmental scraper latch-plates -55 are provided alongside the rear 4 ends 2| of the scraper carrying arms 20 on opposite ends of a horizontal, transverse rock shaft 56 journalled in said ends 2|, the arrangement being such that upon rocking of said shaft 56 in opposite directions, said latch plates 55 will be correspondingly swung, in unison, into two opposite latching positions, in one of which hook lugs 51 thereon will hook over the lugs 54 on one side edge of the channel beam 49 and latch the scraper 55 in forwardly facing position, whereas, in the other position of the latch plates55 similar hook lugs 58 thereon will hook over the lugs 54 on the other side edge of the beam 49 and latch the scraper 46 in rearwardly facing position.
Coil springs '59 are connected to the ends 2| of the scraper carrying arms 22s, as at 60, and
to said latch plates 55, as at 6!, to swing said latch plates 55 past a dead center position, relative to the connections of said springs 59, into either of the latching positions thereof which are established by stop pins 62 on said ends 2|. The hook lugs 57, 58 are formed with cam edges 63, 64 so that when the scraper ie is swung into either forwardly or rearwardly facing position, said edges 63, 5% will coact with appropriate lugs 515. to cam the latch hook lugs 57, 58 upwardly for snap action latching engagement, under" the urge of the springs 59, with the appropriate lugs 5 For unlatching the scraper latch plates 55, a bell-crank E5 is fixed on the rock shaft 56 with pull cables 66, El attached to opposite ends thereof and trained over side by side pulleys 68, 59 on one scraper carrying arm 25, said cablesbring further arranged to extendforwardly to within easy reach from the drivers seat of the tractor for pull on said cables alternately to rock the rock shaft se in opposite directions and swing said latch plates 55 in opposite directions from either latching position past dead center position to be moved by the coil springs 59 into the opposite latching position thereof.
The operation of the described invention will be readily understood. The turntable 9 with the scaper carrying arms 2!) and the scraper 46 may be raised and lowered by the hydraulic lift mechanism of the tractor from and into operative scraping position, as desired. When'the turntable 9 is raised, and unlocked in the manner already described, it may be oscillated, or revolved, substantially horizontally into different set angular positions to position the scraper 45 in different positions oblique to the path of travel of the tractor, either forwardly or rearwardly, for instance the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2. In the differentset positions thereof, the turntable 9 may be automatically locked, by releasing the pull cable 43, through projection of the lock bolts 36 by the springs 31. By adjusting the compression rod 25,the turntable 9 may be tilted about an axis transverse to the tractor, in the manner described, to vary the pitch of the scraper blade sections 41. By unlatching the scraper latch plates 55, in the manner described, to unlatch the scraper 48in its forwardly facing position, and causing said plates 55 to swing into an opposite latching position, the scraper 56 maybe lowered to the ground and caused to roll along the same, when the tractor is driven forwardly, to thereby assume rearwardly facing position in which the same will be automatically latched by said latch'plates 55. Conversely, with the scraper 55 in rearwardly facing position, and the latch plates 55 unlatched and swung intoan opposite -latching position, the scraper 46 may be caused to roll along the ground, when the tractor is backed, to thereby assume forwardly facing position, in which the same will be automatically latched by the'l'atch plates 55, as described.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention, without further explanation.
