This invention relates to a loading device particularly adapted for use in connection with an ordinary tractor for loading ,fer-
tilizer onto a wagon or spreader, and has [for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth a loading device of such class by means of which the time and labor of loading fertilizer may be materially reduced- D A further object of the invention is'to provide a loading device of the character aforesaid which is of simple and durable construction, thoroughly efiicient in its intended use, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and which may be conveniently operated by the operator of the tractor with which the loading device is associated.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel construction,'combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more particularly described, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the description and drawings are to be'taken as illustrative and that the invention is intended to be limited only by the scope of the claim hereunto appended.

numeral 1 indicates a pair of spaced, horizontally disposed frame members which are provided at their rearward ends with U-bolts 2 for mounting on the rear axle 3 of a tractor indicated generally at 4. At the forward ends thereof, the frame members 1 are connected together by means of a cross piece 1.
-In spaced relation to the forward ends of the frame members 1, the latter are provided with a transversely extending plate 5 which extends transversely of the members 1 and is secured thereto by means of suitable bolts 6. The member 5 is adapted to seat on the frame of the tractor to support the members 1 at the forward ends of the latter.
Mounted on the ends of the cross piece 1' and the forward ends of the frame members 1 are a pair of spaced uprights 7 which are connected together at their forward faces bymeans of a pair of diagonally extending braces 8, and which are braced with respect to the frame members 1 by means of a pair of L-shaped braces 9. The braces 9 are secured to the uprights 7 by means-of suitable bolts 10 which extend through the braces 9 and also extend through the diagonal braces 8 for retaining the lower ends of the latter in position. The braces 9 are secured to the rame members 1 by means of the bolts 6 which hold the transverse frame member 5 in position. The braces 9 are spaced from the end portions of the transverse frame member 5 by means of suitable washers 11. The uprights 7 are further connected with the frame members 1 by means of a pair of diagonally disposed braces 11 extending there tween.
Rotatably extending through the uprights 7, in spaced relation to the upper ends there-v which is fixedly mounted a drive wheel 13. Extending over the drive wheel 13 is an endless belt 14 which also extends over a drive pulley 15 fixedly mounted on and operated by a power shaft 16 suitably connected with the motor of the tractor.
Having their rearward ends pivotally connected to the frame members 1 are a pair of beams 17 which extend along the outer faces of the frame members 1 and merge adjacent rearward ends thereof the prongs 21 are conend of the chain 35' being fixedly secured to the forward ends of the frame members into downwardly and inwardly inclined ortions 18 which terminate in horizontally isposed portions 19 upon which a loader element indi- 5 cated generally at 20 is pivotally supported.
The loader element 20 includes a plurality of spaced, elongated prongs 21 connected together by means of a connecting rod 22. The
rongs 21 are maintained in spaced relation by means of a plurality of spacerblocks 23 which are mounted on the rod 22 and which are disposed between the prongs 21. The prongs21 are drawn into engagement with the end faces of the spacer blocks 23 by means of a suitable nut 24 threaded on one end of the rod 22. The forward ends of the hori zontal portions 19 of the beams 17 are transversel apertured for rotatably receiving theret rough a pair of the spacer blocks 23 for supporting the loader element 20. Extending iin parallel relation to the outermostof the prongs 21 are a pair of guide elements 27 which are disposed above and in spaced relation to such outermost prongs 21. The guide elements 27 taper toward their forward ends, and are formed at their rearward ends with right angularly ofiset portions 28 which are secured to the forward facesof the transversely extending block 25 by means of suitable bolts 29.
Extending between the horizontal portions 19 of the beams 17, in spaced relation to the transversely extending block 25, is a combined brace and spacer bar 30, the ends of which are angularly offset and secured to the inner faces of the ortions 19 by means of suitable bolts 31. onnected to the bolts 31 are a pair of loops 32, to which are connected yokes 33 having sheaves 34 rotatably mounted between the bifurcated ends thereof. Passin over the sheaves 34 are chains 35, each 0 which has oneend secured to an eye bolt 36 extending through an upright 7 adjacent the upper 'endof the latter, the other the operating shaft 12 between the uprights 7. Fixedly mounted on the operating shaft 12, between the chains 35, is a brake drum 37 which is adapted to be engaged by a brake band 38. The brake band 38 is secured at one end to a plate 39 which extends between the uprights 7 ,and the right angularly offset ends of which are fixedl secured to the inner faces of the uprights 7 y means of suitable bolts 40. The plate 39 is formed at its forward end with a forward projection 41 which is arranged at one side of the brake drum 37 Loosely pivoted to the projection 3 41 is a brake actuating lever 42 to which the opposite end of the brake band 38 is secured. The brake actuating lever 42 may be moved downwardly to bring the brake band 38 into engagement with the brake drum 37, and may be moved transversely to bring the rearward end of the brake lever under the laterally extending upper end of a latch rod 43 to maintain the brake band 38 in engagement with the brake drum 37. The latch rod 43 is secured at its lower end to one of the frame members 1. 4
Secured to the combined brace and spacing bar 30, intermediate the ends of the latter, is an upwardly extending resilient latch member 44 which is provided with a forwardly projecting nose 45 for engagement with a latch element 46 secured to and projecting from the rearward face of the bar 25. The latch member 46 is substantially U-shaped with the central portion thereof arranged in spaced relation to the bar 25. Connected to the upper end of the latch member 44 is an actuating cable 47 which extends rearwardly over the plate 39 and passes through an apertured bracket 48, terminating in a grip member 49 within ready reach of the operator of the tractor. Having its respective ends connected with one of the braces 17 and with the transversely extending bar 25 is a stay chain 50 which limits the extent of pivotal movement of the loading element 20 in a downward direction.
In the operation of the loading device, the operating shaft 12 is operated from the motor of the tractor, through the power shaft 16, pulley 15, belt 14, and drive wheel 13. Upon the rotation of the operating shaft 12, the chains 35 are wound thereon, and owing to the passage of the chains 35 over the sheaves 34, the beams 17 are swung upwardly about their pivoted rearward ends, carrying therewith the loader element 20. Upon the elevation of the loader element 20 to the height desired, the brake actuating lever 42 is moved downwardly and laterally into latching engagement with the latch rod 43 to maintain the loader element in elevated position when the driving means for the shaft 12 is disengaged from the motor of the tractor by means of any suitable clutch with which the power shaft 16 will be provided. The tractor then may be moved as may be necessary to bring the elevated loader element 20 above the wagon or the like upon which it is desired to deposit the load carried by the loader element. The nose 45 "of the latching element 44 is then disengaged from the latching element 46 by means of the cable 47 which permits the loader element 20 to swing in a downward are about the shaft 22 to permit the load to slip over the forward ends of the prongs 21. The brake actuating lever 42 is then released to permit the loader element 20 to be lowered to its loading position, after which the tractor is driven I appended claim.
What I claim is: A loading device comprising, a pair of horizontally disposed frame members adapted to be mounted on a tractor, a pair of uprights secured to the forward ends of said frame members, a pair'of beams havin their rearward ends pivotall connected wit said frame members, a loa or element pivotally mounted on the forward ends of said be a rotatable operating shaft supported by an extending between said up the upper ends of the latter, a plate secured to and extending between sai upri hts in spaced relation to said operatin s aft, a pair of chains for raising said oader element, each of said chains having one.end fixedly secured to said operating shaft and havin' its other end secured to one of said uprig ts, a combined brace and spacing bar connecting said beams adjacent the loader element a pair of sheaves connected with said bar and engaging said chains intermediate the ends of the latter, means for rotating said operating shaft for actuating said chains to raise the" loader element, a brake drum fixedly mounted on the operating shaft, a brake band having one and secured to the late extending between the uprights, said rake band extending over the brake drum, an actuating lever pivotally connected to said plate and having the other end of the brake band secured thereto, a latch rod projecting upwardly from one of said frame members, said lever being movable in a vertical direction for moving the brake band into engagement with the brake drum and further being movable in a horizontal direction into engagement with said latch rod to maintain the operating shaft against. rotation after the loader element has been raised, latching means normally maintaining the loader element against ivotal movemeng and an actuating cable or releasing sai latching means.
