COLLAR-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,017, dated August 1, 1882,

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLINTON DENNY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wye Mills, in the county of Talbot and State of, Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in whichi Figure lis a side view of myimproved horsecollar fastener as applied for use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the loop and securingplate and the rack-securing plate or shank; and Fig. 3 is a view showing the parts of my fastener detached from the collar.

This invention has relation to an improvement in fastenings particularly adapted for horse-collars, its object being to facilitate the operation of securin g the collar upon the hames, to permit of its read yadjustmentor accommodation to collars of varying sizes, to'lessen expense, and to promote convenience and durability.

The nature of this invention consists of a sprin g-rack havingareturned portion or shank clinched over the top edge of one side of the collar after passing under the leather, a rebent plate likewise clinched over the top edge of the other side of the collar after passing under the leather, and having an eye and a loop or link connected to the eye of the plate and adapted to engage with the spring-rack, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In carrying out my invention I employ a spring-rack consisting of an ed gewise-disposed plate, A, formed or provided with a rebent or returned flat portion or shank, A, inserted through a slit, to, cut transverselyin the leather of the collar, and thence passed under the leather and out through a second slit, a, in the leather, and finally clinched over the top edge of one side of the collar, as at b, which firmly secures it to the collar. The rack is made of spring metal,and standsisolatedfrorn the collar, as shown in the side View, to allow it to have a certain amount of spring and flexibility to aid in holdingand permitof theready detachment of the securing-loop therefrom.

serted through a slit, 0, out crosswise in the leather and passed under theleather and thence out through a second slit, 0, in the leather, and finally clinched over the top edge of one side of the collar, as at c ,which firmly secures it to the collar. This plate B has an eye, (I.

G is a loop or link, preferably curved, and capable of engaging with any one of the slotted apertures of the rack A to effect the fastening of the collar upon the hames.

This fastening, by the use of the spring-rack and loop, is adapted to accommodate collars of different sizes, facilitates the fastening ot' the collar upon the hames, obviates the use of straps, which are liable to break or pull ofi', and consequently require renewal, and thus lessen expense. It is durable and convenient, and acts as a spring to providefor the efl'ectual holding of the loop as against its possibleleaving the slotted apertures of the rack, and to allow the ready detachment therefrom of the loop.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the spring-rack A, having the rebent or returned shank A, the plate B, having the reheat portion or plate B, and an eye and the loop G, substantially as set forth. I

2. The combination, with a horse-collar, of the spring-rack A, having the rebent or returned shank A inserted through a slit cut into and passed under the leather and out through a second slit therein, and finally clinched over the top edge of one side of the collar, the plate B, having the rebent portion '13, likewise inserted, passed under the leather,

and clinched over the top edge of the other side of the collar, and theloop O, substantially as described.
