NOV. 25, Q s. LANE COMBINED sTooL, LADDER', AND HIGH CHAIR Filed Aug. 17, 1948 IIIIIIIIIIII llllll m. m .n m
Patented Nov. 25, i952 'COMBINED sTooL, LADDER AND HIGH CHAIR stanley s. Lane, United sta-tes Army, N e'w London, Conn.
Application August i7, 194s, -seri'alNu 44H58 (ci. 15s-etz) (Granted under the act of March '3, 1883, :as amended April so, 192s; 37o Io. G. 757,)
Claiiifs.
The invention described herein, if patented, may be manufactured and used by the Government for governmental purposes without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates to arutility item yfor the home and comprises a stool which may belreadily converted into a ladder or a high chair as occasion may arise.
-A primar-y object of thedi'n'vention resides in the provision of a piece of furniture as justmcntioned in whichthe several parts are neatlvyfand compactly arranged and yet which may be readily and simply operated, with no particular skill, to convert the device from any one to the other of the several articles mentioned.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the device when set up as a high chair;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the arrangement shown in Figure l, with the folded back shown in dotted outline;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary rear elevational View of the arrangement of Figures 1 and 2; and
Figure 4 is a similar View of the device arranged as a stool and stepladder.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the stool is provided with four legs I-I which are inclined upwardly as indicated in Figures 1 and 2 and provided with cross braces 2 for imparting rigidity to the device, and with ladder rungs 3 so that it may be employed as a ladder from time to time as desired.
'Ihe legs l, which may be made of aluminum tubing, are of hollow construction and open at their upper ends to provide for adjustably supporting the arms of the high chair construction, as will appear hereinafter.
The seat for the chair or stool may be formed of suitable plywood, plastics, or other material and is indicated by the numeral 4. This seat is provided with a number of apertures 5 corresponding to the number of legs forming the stool and so situated as to register with the open upper ends of the legs I.
The arms which are to be used when the device is converted into a high chair are indicated by the numeral 6 and comprise inverted U-shaped members of aluminum tubing. The legs 6 of these arms, it will be noted, are spaced apart a distance corresponding to the distance between the upper ends of the front and rear legs so that these depending portions will register with the 2 open illpveif` ends .of the legs land 'sli'dably received in the apertures 5 yof the seat portion 4 and the upper ends of the legs themselves. Each leg is provided adjacent the open upper end thereof with a set screw ,1 adaptedjto cooperate with .that 4portion o'f the leg Si which -is situated within the open` upperjend of the particu-lar leg 4l. It will be apparent, therefore, thatby loosening n the set screws 'l Ythe arms may be lcompletely depressed as shown in Figure 4 when thedevice isl to be used as a stool, or may be extended vertically as `shown in Figures 1,2, 'and'B and locked in this extended position by turning down the set screws 'I so as to lock the arms 6 against vertical movement.
The back member of the high chair is composed of an inverted U-shaped frame 8 of aluminum tubing or the like which may be provided with the usual covering to complete the back formation. The lower ends of the inverted U-shaped frame 8 are hingedly connected to the back edge of the seat 4 by means of a pair of hinge pins 9 and the arrangement is such that the back may be swung upwardly into its operative position as shown in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, or swung downwardly to inoperative position as shown in full lines in Figure 4 and dotted lines in Figure 2. When in this latter position, the back member may be releasably secured against movement by means of a clamp l0. Also, it is to be noted that the back member 8 is provided with slide bolts ll adapted to cooperated with apertures l2 formed in the arms 6 so that when the bolts are moved into cooperative relation with the apertures l2 the back member is securely locked in its erect and operative position.
A tray I3, provided with attaching clamps l, may be provided and detachably supported on the arms 6, the clamps being so arranged as to support the tray I3 in proper relation to the occupant of the high chair. When this tray is not in use, it may be stored away under the seat portion 4 by sliding the same between clips I5 and the bottom of the chair to which they are attached.
With the foregoing arrangement, it will be apparent that this composite piece of furniture may be used as a stepladder, at any time, due to the inclination of the legs l, and may be readily converted into either a stool or a high chair by simply operating the set screws l and bolts l l so as to raise or lower the chair arms 6 and swing the back either into erect and operative positionV or into depending an inoperative position as the case may be. Moreover, it is to be noted that the structure is composed of few parts, of simple and inexpensive construction, but nevertheless provides a sturdy and durable high chair, stool, and stepladder.
I claim: 1. A combined stool and high chair comprising a plurality of legs and braces therefor, a seat portion permanently secured to the tops of the legs, a back member hingedly connected to the seat portion, a pair of vertically slidable arms mounted on the stool, and releasable connection between said back and arms.
2. A combined stool and high chair comprising a plurality of legs, a seat portion permanently secured to the tops of the legs, a back member hingedly connected to the seat portion, a pair of vertically slidable arms adjustably mounted on the stool, means for securing said arms in adjusted positions, and a releasable connection between said back and arms.
3. A combined stool and high chair comprising a plurality of legs, a seat portion permanently secured to the tops of the legs, a back member hingedly connected to the seat member, a pair of inverted U-shaped arms mounted on the stool for vertical adjustment, set screws for securing said arms in adjusted positions, and a slidably-mounted bolt for releasably locking the hinged back member with respect to said arms.
4. A combined stool and high chair comprising a plurality of legs, a seat portion permanently secured to the legs, a back member hingedly connected to the seat portion and adapted to be moved into erect operative position or into a depending and inoperative position, means for releasably maintaining the back member in inoperative position, a pair of vertically adjustable arms mounted on the stool, and a releasable connection between the arms and back for supporting the back in its erect and operative position.
5. A combined stool, ladder and high chair comprising a plurality of upwardly inclined legs, a seat portion and ladder rungs permanently secured to said legs, a. back member hngedly connected to the seat portion, a pair of vertically adjustable arms mounted on the stool, means for securing the arms in adjusted positions. and a releasable connection between said back and arms.
