1 Claim. 1
This invention comprises novel and useful improvements in a portable sun cot and chair and more specifically pertains to a convertible chair and cot of a portable collapsible construction and which shall combine with the customary advantages of a foldable and collapsible cot, an adjustable back rest to adapt the device to function as a sun chair and the like.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a convertible chair and cot having an improved collapsible construction; which shall be capable of use as a collapsible and folding cot in accordance with conventional practice; which by means of an adjustable back rest shall be capable of functioning as a lounging bed or a sun chair; which shall provide adjustable arm rests as a part of the back rest and as a reinforcement thereof; and wherein the back rest may be readily adjustable longitudinally of the cot to adapt the same for various functions, and may likewise be mounted upon the frame of the cot in various inclined positions.
These, together with various ancillary features and objects of the invention, which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the present invention, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated, by way of example only, in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view showing an embodiment of the invention with the back rest attached thereto in a manner to function as a lounging chair;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the arrangement of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional View taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 3-43 of Figure 2 and showing the central leg assembly and an end leg assembly;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view showing the device in its folded or collapsed position; and,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the removable and adjustable back rest of the invention.
Reference is now made more specifically to the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, the invention being illustrated as consisting of a collapsible cot portion indicated generally by numeral it together with a removable and adjustable back rest indicated at E2. The collapsible cot assembly it consists of a central leg assembly indicated generally by the numeral I l and which comprises a pair of parallel leg members It which are fixedly secured to each other adjacent their lower ends as by a transverse rod It. At their upper ends, each of the legs I6 is provided with a metal bracket which is fixedly secured to the legs it in a rigid manner by any suitable fasteners such as rivets, nuts or bolts or the like 22. The bracket members 2t have their extremities extending from opposite sides of the leg members It as will be readily apparent from Figures 1 and 2. The two end leg assemblies indicated generally by the numeral 24 are of identical construction, each consisting of a pair of parallel leg members 26 which adjacent their lower ends are fixedly connected together as by a transverse rod 28. A pair of frame sections 3b are hingedly secured to the brackets 20, and have the end leg assemblies 24 pivotally mounted upon their opposite extremities. Each of the frame sections 30 preferably comprises a pair of parallel side rails 32 which at their outer ends are fixedly secured to each other as by transverse rods or bars 34, and at their inner ends are hingedly connected to the bracket members 20 at the ends thereof and upon opposite sides of the central leg assembly M as by pivot pins, rivets or the like 38. Adjacent their outer ends, the side members 32 are pivotally connected as by pivot pins 38 to the upper ends of the leg members it or the end leg assemblies 24.
A sheet of pliable material 40a is disposed between the side rails 32 of the two frame sections and has its ends secured about the transverse bars 34 at the outer end of the frame sections. It will be noted that the bar 34 is disposed outwardly of the pivot pins 38 by which the legs 26 of the end leg sections are hinged to the frame sections.
As will be better apparent from Figure 3, a pair of reinforcing brace and latch bars Mi are ivotally mounted upon the transverse bar l8 of the central leg assembly and are provided with books 42 at their outer ends which are detachably engageable upon the transverse bars 28 of the end leg assemblies. Thus, as shown in Fig-- ures l and 2, the frame sections may be folded outwardly in opposite directions from the central leg assembly and the latch bars 58 may be latched or hooked to the transverse bars 28 of the end leg assembly thus: fixedly securing the cot portion I 0 in its erected or extended position, with the pliable cover to constituting a supporting surface for a cot or chair and being stretched between the two transverse bars 34.
As so far described, the device is adapted to function as a collapsible cot of a conventional porting 'pins 5 5.
' character and as such will be suitable for portable use as by campers, as a temporary portable. bed and the like.
However, the present invention contemplatesthe provision of an additional means whereby the collapsible cot above described may be satisfactorily adapted to function in various other capacities as a camping :chair, a lounging chair or sun chair, a hospital bed and the like. For that purpose, the side rails 32 of the frame sections St are provided with longitudinally spaced inwardly and laterally extending metal pegs or pins Mi appropriately spaced upon the side rails 32. The adjustable back rest l2 to be'now 'described is removably and adjustably secured to these supporting pegs.
The back rest preferably comprisesiparalll upwardly extending members 46 between the upper and lower ends of which are rigidly connected a pair of transverse rods '48. These rods serve to provide with the members 4% a rigid but light weight frame over which a suitable sheet-of pliable material 5:) such as canvas or the like may be mediate the ends of the latter, and adjacent their opposite ends, the braces 52 have fixedly secured 'thereto'a transverse bracing rod 51.
l v The lower ends of the nieinbers ifiand52 are provided with notches or slots 5% and 58 respectively which are adapted to be selectivel engaged upon the sup- Obviously, by this arrangement the back rest can be easily detachably secured to the side rails 32 of the cot frame in positions adjustable longitudinally thereof and at various verthe pegs 5 and the notches-63 toperrnit the back rest to move as a unit with a fixed inclination of the member 58 along the cot; or'alternatively to vary the inclination by simultaneously adjusting the spacing of the legs 46, '52'on the pegs 44 While simuitanccusly adjusting the notches the arm supports 59 on the pegs65.
It will thus be apparent that by moving the back rest'towards the rightend of Figuresl and the back rest between the two upwardly folded frame sections, folding the end leg assemblies downwardly and securing the latch rods to the downwardly folded assemblies to lock the device in its collapsed position. a
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be'readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and'accompanying drawings, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, but all suitable modifications and-equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope oi the appended claims.
Having'describcd the invention, what is claimed asnew'is:
In a collapsible device of the class described, a pairof spaced legs, means for connecting the lower ends of legs, brackets attached to the upper ends of: the legs and extending beyond both sides thereof, a first frame section having one end hingedto one end of said brackets, legs hinged to the other end'of the frame section, a second frame section of the same structure as the first section and having legs hinged thereto, said second section being hinged to the other end Or" the brackets, longitudinally spaced pins projecting from each frame section, a pivctally supported back rest, and means on said back rest for selec- .tively engaging said pins to enable the back rest to be supported in a plurality of positions longitudinally of either of said frame sections.
