SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,856, dated August 1, 1882, Application filed June 22,1882. (No model.)

T all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. KITCHENS, of

' thecounty of Skull yville, I ndian Territory, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description oftheinventiomwhich will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to presses for baling hay, cotton, and the. like; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

111 the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the front and B the rear axle, having wheels 0 and supporting the bed-frame D, under which the said rear axle,whose wheels are rigid, is made to revolve in suitable boxes, E. The sides or sills of the bed-frame have uprights F, supporting the cap-beams G.

H is the press-box, the sides of which, I, are provided at the front end with hinged doors J,

for which suitable fastenings, K, are PTOVldQLL' The doors J,which are hinged to the sills L of the bed-frame, have hinged brackets M, serving as supports, when the doors are opened, to sustain them in a horizontal position. For a like purpose the sills L are provided with brackets N.

The top of the press-box consists of two hinged half-covers, 0, which, while the operation is in progress, may be held in a closed po sition by cross-braces P, for which suitable staples or fastenings, Q Q, are provided.

It is the follower,which slides longitudinally in the press-box, and is provided with a rearward-projecting stem, S.

T is a shaft mounted transversely at the rear end of the frame, and provided with a roller, U, supporting the follower-stem, adjoining which are a pair of pulleys, V V.

Mounted securely upon the revolving rear axle is a double-faced clutch'collar, W, capable of engaging two loose clutches, X X. The

latter are grooved spirally, as shown, and provided with studs Y, to which ropes Z are attached. Said ropes are passed over the polleys V and attached to studs A upon the sides of thefollower-stem, at the rear end of the latter.

From the foregoingdescription taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention will be readily un' derstood. The follower is withdrawn to the rear end of the press-box, the covers opened, the press packed, and the covers again closed and secured. The clutches X are then placed in engagement with the collarWand the machine drawn over the ground, thus winding the ropes upon the spirally-grooved clutches, thereby forcing the follower into the box and compressing its contents. The side doors may now be opened and the bale tied and removed, after which the press is ready for a repetition of the operation.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a baling-prcss, the combination of the frame mounted upon wheels, the rear axle bein g revolving, the press-box, the follower having rearward-projecting stem, the shaft mounted transversely at the rear end of the frame, and having a roller supporting said stem, the pulleysjournaled upon said axle adjoining said stem, and the ropes secured to said stem passing over the pulleys and connected to clutches upon the revolving axle, as set forth.

2. In a baling-press, the combination of the sills L, having brackets N, the press-box, and the doors J, hinged to the sills, and having hinged supports M, as set forth.

The combination of the frame, the revolving axle B, having double-faced clutch-collar W and spirally-grooved clutches X, the pressbox, the longittulinally sliding follower having stem S, the shaft T, having. roller U and pulleys V, and the ropes Z, connecting the follower-stem with the clutches X, as set forth.
