HAY-PRESS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RAYMOND WV. PAR- RIOTl, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moundsville, in the county of Marshall and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Hay-Press, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hay presses, one of its objects being to provide a machine of this character designed to produce two bales during one baling operation, there being a single follower employed for directing the hay successively into the two press boxes.
A further object is to provide means under the control of a rotating sweep, whereby reciprocation ofthe follower is produced, said means being simple, durable and efficient.
A further object is to provide a machine of this character which, when not in use, can be collapsed and thus readily conveyed from place to place but which, when to be set up for use, can be elongated so as thus to bring the sweep at a desired distance from the press box.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of the press, a portion of the reach being broken away. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section through the press boxes and follower. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line AB Fig. 2.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the bottom of the body of the machine, there being longitudinally slotted side walls 2 upstanding from this bottom and cooperating therewith to form opposed press boxes G and D respectively, each of these press boxes being provided with a hinged top 3 connected to a cross strip 4: which is secured to the side walls 2 adjacent the centers of the tops thereof. Feed rolls 5 extend across the body adjacent the cross strips 4 and are pressed downwardly by springs 6 arranged within Specification of Letters Patent.

A slot 12 is formed by cutting away the middle portion of the bottom 1 and mounted to reciprocate within this slot is a follower 13 upstanding from and fixedly connected to a carriage 1a located under the bottom 1.
This carriage is mounted on rollers 15 or other anti-friction devices engaging a platform 16 which, in turn, is connected to the press boxes by standards 17. The rear axle 18 of the machine extends under platform 16 and is adapted to be supported by wheels 19. Dogs 20 are mounted within slots 21 in the sides of the press boxes and are adapted to engage the material being baled so as to prevent expansion of the bale subsequent to each compressing operation. Extending downwardly from the outer ends of the two press boxes are hangers 22 and 23 respectively, the lower ends of the rear hangers being connected by a cross strip 24:. These hangers 22 are likewise connected by a bolt- 25 and another similar bolt 26 connects the front hangers 23. The reach 27 is of any desired length and is provided, at its front end, with a head 28 to which is connected the front axle 29 supported by wheels 30. While the machine is being transported from place to place, the reach 27 is arranged back under the press boxes so that the bolts 25 and 26 will extend through loops 31 extending upwardly from the reach, as shown in Fig. 2, thus supporting head 28 close to the front end of the press boxes.
Mounted on the head 28 are segmental gears 32 and 33, these gears constantly meshing and one of them having a long arm 34: while the other gear has a short arm 35. A sweep 36 is connected, as at 37, to the head 28 and is provided at equal distances from the pivot 37 with tappet rollers 38 and 39, the pivot 37 being interposed between them. One arm of the sweep is of considerable length so that one or more horses may be connected thereto. It will be noted that the bearing of gear 33 is more remote from pivot 37 than is the bearing of gear 32. This is for the purpose hereinafter set forth,
Mounted on the front portion of reach 27 are guide sheaves 40 and 41 and mounted upon the front end portion of carriage 14 is a sheave 42. Another sheave 43 is mounted on the rear end portion of carriage 14 while still another sheave 44 is carried by the cross strip 24. Additional guide sheaves 45 and 46 are connected to the rear corner portions of the head 28. Secured to the arm 35 is one end of a cable 47 which passes around guide sheave 46 and thence rearwardly past sheave 41 and around sheave 42, the other end of the cable 47 being attached to the front end portion of the bottom 1, as shown in F ig. 2. Another cable 48 is secured at one end to arm 35 and extends around sheave 45, past sheave 40 and thence rearwardly into engagement with sheave 44 from which it extends around sheave 43 thence back to the strip 24 to which it is secured.
lVhen it is desired to use the machine herein described the bolts 25 and 26 are removed and the head 28 is drawn forward until the rear loops 31 are brought into position to receive the bolt 26. WVheels 19 and 30 can then be removed so that the machine will thus be deposited on the ground. The hay or other material to be baled is placed in hopper 8 and forced downwardly. Sweep 36 is swung around the pivot 37 and the tappet rollers 38 and 39 are brought successively into engagement with the arms of the segmental gears. lVhen either of these rollers strikes arm 35, it swings said arm about the pivot of the gear 33 and pulls on cable 48 so that this cable thus pulls on sheave 43 and causes carriage 14 to travel rearwardly. Follower 13 will thus press into the rear box any hay or other material which may be fed into the path of the follower. lVhile the arm 35 is being shifted by the tappet roller, the gears 33 and 32 swing arm 34 toward arm 35 and into position to be engaged by the tappet roller as soon. as said roller passes off of arm 35. \Vhen the roller moves against arm 34, it shifts it laterally and thus causes its gear 32 to rotate gear 33 and swing arm 35 in the opposite direction. Said arm will thus pull on cable 47 which, in turn, will draw the carriage 14 forwardly on platform 16 so that hay or other material in the path of follower 13 will be compressed in the front press box. Thus during the rotation of the sweep one movement of the follower in each direction will be produced each time either of the tappet rollers comes into engagement with the two arms 35 and 34 or, in other words,
during each complete rotation of the sweep, material will be placed under compression twice in each press box. The dogs 20 obviously act as ordinarily to prevent the material while under pressure from springing back during the withdrawal of the follower from the press box.
lVhen it is desired to transport the machine from place to place, the reach 27 is shifted rearwardly so that both of the bolts 25 and 26 will engage the two series of loops 31 after which the wheels 19 and 30 can be placed in position and the machine driven forward.
Vhat is claimed is 1. The combination with opposed press boxes, a carriage, a support for the carriage, and a follower extending from the carriage and into the space between the press boxes, of meshing gears, arms extending therefrom, a revoluble actuating device for successively engaging the arms to oscillate the same, separate flexible elements connected to one of the arms and to the front and rear portions of the front and rear press boxes respectively, guide sheaves engaged by said flexible elements, and sheaves upon the front and rear end portions of the carriage for engagement by the respective flexible elements, said elements and arms constitutin means for reciprocating the carriage and follower during the rotation of the actuating element.
2. The combination with a press box, a reach adjustable longitudinally relative thereto, and a head, said head being spaced from the press box by the reach and being adjustable with the reach, of a follower mounted for reciprocation within the press box, meshing gears upon the head, arms extending therefrom, a sweep adapted successively to engage the arms to reciprocate the same, flexible elements secured to one of the arms and secured to the front and rear portions of the press box, sheaves movable with the follower and disposed at the front and back thereof for engagement by the respective flexible elements, and guide sheaves engaged by said elements, said elements and the arms constituting means for reciprocating the follower during the rotation of the sweep.
