Application February 10, 1948, Serial No. 7,413
This invention relates to awning shutters, and the-object of the invention is to provide a device of this character that will keep out the rays of the sun, yet allow ventilation at the same time.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character that can be SWllIlg from 1 Claim. (CI. 20-53) awning position to shutter position, to effectively close the opening with which they are associated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shutter awning that, when fitted to a horizontally hinged window, will be automatically adjusted to a proper level by the degree the window to which it is fitted is opened, thereby eliminating the manual adjustment of the shutters every time the window is moved to a different position.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter de scribed, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an outside elevation of a fragmentary portion of a building wall, provided with a window opening which is adapted to have a window positioned therein, and with an embodiment of the invention installed in operative relation therewith;
Figure 2 is a sectional view of a fragmentary portion of a building, showing an edge elevational view of the device and Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, there is shown a window jamb II], which may be fitted to a building wall having a suitable opening therein for the window jamb Ill.
The awning shutter embodying the invention comprises a frame l2, which is secured to the swinging window sash I3 by means of screws or similar fastenings I4. Conventional swinging sash have the toothed bar l5 associated therewith, whereby the sash is propped open as desired, as shown in Figure 2. The toothed bar I5 is associated with the keeper H5 in the conventional 2 shutters to work simultaneously, and uniforml adjust the shutters. 7
At the lower corner of the frame 2|, on the same side with the bar 2|, a roller 22 is mounted on a pin shaft 23. A cable 24 is trained over the roller 22 and the cable 24 is fastened at one end at 25 to the lowest arm I! and at its opposite end to the screw eye 26. The screw 26 being fixed in the jamb 0 close to the pivot or hinge part of the sash l3.
Connected at 2'! to the cable 24, is a second cable 28 which passes into the section of the building in which the jamb I0 is mounted, through the tubular guide member 29 fixed in the jamb. A knot 30 fixed to the inner end of the cable 28 engages the member 29 to prevent the cable from being drawn outwardly of the building.
As the window sash I3 is swung outwardly. the screw eye 26, by its position, as previously described, will place tension on the cable 24, to move the bar 2| downwardly against the tension of the spring 3|. This will change the angle between the shutters l9 and the sash l3, conversely, when the sash is swung inwardly the angle between the shutters and the sash will be increased. Therefore, every time the window is moved, the shutters will be automatically adjusted with relation to the degree of opening of the window.
The spring 3| is fixed at one end as at 32 to the frame l2 and at the other end as at 33 to one of the arms l1, thus as the spring 3| urges the rod 2| upwardly, the degree of opening of the shutters will be varied as the window is moved, as shown in Fig. 2. The spring 3| will also return the shutters to open position after manual control.
For manual control of the shutters l9, the cable 28 is pulled by means of the knob 30. When the cable 28 is pulled, cable 24 will be tensioned to pull the bar 2| downwardly to close the shutters. Thus the shutters I9 will be closed for a distance the cable 28 is pulled. In this manner the shut ters may be adjusted manually for entirely closing the shutters over the sash to prevent the rays of the sun entering the building. Upon release of the knob 3|], the spring 3| will open the shutters to their full width. Under normal conditions the shutters |9 will remain approximately horizontal in all positions of the sash 3, but may be completely closed over the sash by pulling on the knob 30, to pull the cable 28, as desired.
The invention is suitable for buildings, trailer windows or any type of swinging window whereever they are used.
It is believed that from the foregoing description, the structure and operation of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and it is to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
An awning shutter of the type described in combination with a swinging window sash, comprising a frame adapted to be fixed to the window sash, shutter arms pivotally connected to the frame, a control rod pivotally connected to the shutter arms for simultaneous operation of the arms, a control cord connected to the control rod and to the window jamb for the sash, whereby movement of the window sash outwardly changes the angle between the shutters and the sash, a second cord fixed to said first cord centrally thereof and passed through the window jamb inwardly thereof, whereby a pull on said second cord will tension said control cord to move said shutters into closed position, said shutters remaining approximately horizontal in all positions of the sash except when moved into closed position when said second cable is pulled, means for retaining said second cord in said window jamb, and means connected to the frame and control rod for returning the shutters to open position upon release of the pull on said second cord.
