This invention aims to provide novel means for holding a pair of doors closed, and for holding them open fully, after they have been moved partially towardan open position, the construction being such after the doors have been jogged slightly toward open position, they will open automatically, under the action'of an actuating means. The invention aims, further, to supply novel means whereby the doors are rendered subject. to the will of an operator.
It is .w-ithinthe-province of the disclosure to improve generally andto enhance the utility of devices of. that type towhich the present inventionappertains.

A backwardly projecting finger 25 is rigidly securedat 52 .tothe intermediate portion of the link-2| and is disposed approximately at right angles to the link. The-finger 25 has a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings 26.. The arm 8 .hasan. outwardly inclined rear end 9 provided with a .plurality of openings 21. One end of a resilient actuating means, for instance a pull spring28 may be mounted in any of the openings 2% of the finger 25 by means of a longitudinally adjustable connection 280. The opposite end of the actuating means 28 may be mounted in any ofthe openings 2? in the rear. end 9 of the arm 8.
A shaft. 291s mounted to rotate in the door 5. On'its forwardend, the shaft 29 has an external handle .33. On its rear end, the shaft 29 carries an internal handle 3|. On the back end of the shaft 29 is' securely mounted a cross head 32. Oppositely extended latch bolts 33 are provided. The inner ends of the latch bolts 33 are pivoted at 34 to the ends of the cross head 32. The outer portions of the latch bolts 33 work in guides 35 on the back side of the door 5. The extremities of the latch bolts 33 are adapted to engage with keepers 36 on the lintel and on the threshold of the doorway 2.
When the doors 3 and 5 are closed, as in Fig, 2, the pivot element 20 lies behind a line connecting the door hinges 4 and 6. The actuating means 28 then operates to hold the doors closed. The doors 35 may be opened a little way by an operator. When they are opened a little way, the pivot element 20 is disposed in front of a line connecting the hinges 4 and 6. The actuating means 28 then operates to swing the doors 3 and 5 into the open position shown in dotted line in Fig. 2. The amount that the doors 3 and 5 are opened by the action of the actuating means 28 depends upon the mounting of the ends of the member 28 or its equivalent in the openings 26 of the finger 25 and in the openings 21 of the part 9 of the arm 8,
The device is readily adaptable to doors of different sizes, owing to the provision of a plurality of openings I! in the brace l2 and owing to the provision of a plurality of openings 22 in the outer end of the link 2| and due to the provision of a plurality of openings 23 in the arm 8.
If the operator is inside the building I, he rotates the shaft 29 by means of the handle 3| of Fig. 4. If the operator is outside the building I, he rotates the shaft 29 by means of the handle 30. When the shaft 29 is rotated, the latch bolts 33 are retracted, and at the same time the operator opens the doors 3 and 5 a little, until the pivot element 29 is in front of a line connecting the door hinges 4 and 6. Thereafter, the doors 3 and 5 will be opened completely by the pull of the actuating means 28.
In Figs, 5 and 6, a modified form of the invention has been shown. In those figures, parts hereinbefore described have been designated by numerals previously used, with the sufiix a.
The latch bolts 33a are advanced to engage the keepers 3611 by means of springs 31 disposed within the guides 35a.
A casing 38 is secured to the back surface of the door 5a. Vertically aligned idle pulleys 39 are supported for rotation in the casing 38. Other vertically aligned pulleys 40 and I40 supported for rotation in the casing 38 at a point slightly in advance of the pulleys 39. There are openings 4| in the top and in the bottom of the casing 38.
A first flexible element 42 is provided, and has its ends connected to the latch bolts 3302. The first flexible element 42 passes through the casing 38, from top to bottom, through the openings 4|. Within the casing 38, the first flexible element 42 is trained about the idle pulleys 40, 39, and 140. The numeral 43 designates a second flexible element having a free end disposed outside the door 5a. The flexible element 43 extends through an opening 44 in the door so, and is connected to the first flexible element 42 at a place between the pulleys or idlers 39. A third flexible element 45 is provided and extends horizontally through an opening 46 in the door 5a. The inner end of the third flexible element 45 has a common connection to the flexible element 42, with the flexible element 43, at a place between the idle pulleys 39. The third flexible element 45 may be of any desired length. It is trained over an idler 41 on a post 48 located remotely with respect to the building I. The flexible element 45 may extend downwardly through a guide 49 on the post 48, and may terminate in a handle 50.
The operator lays hold of the handle 5|], pulls on the flexible element 45, and exerts a pull on the flexible element 42. When a pull is exerted on the flexible element 42, the latch bolts 33a are disengaged from the keepers 36a, and the doors are in a condition to be opened. The pull on the flexible element 45 opens the doors a little, until the pivot element 2!] of Fig. 2 is slightly in front of a line connecting the hinges 4 and 6, and then the doors will be opened fully, by the action of the actuating means 28.
The springs 31 and the latch bolts 33a constitute means for connecting the flexible element 42 at its ends, yieldably, to the door 5a. In addition to the security afforded by the partsas the latch bolts 33 and 33a, any desired positive locking means may be provided. That means has not been shown or discussed, because it forms no part of the present invention and cannot be claimed therein.
The general construction of the device is such that both doors may be held closed as in Fig. 2 (solid line showing). Likewise, the doors are held opened, as shown in the dotted line positions of Fig. 2, and they will not be closed by the action of the wind. When one door is closed, the other door is closed simultaneously. By operating the shaft 29, in the way hereinbefore described, the doors are held latched, and the device easily may be made burglar proof, within reasonable limits. There is no tension to speak of on the actuating means 28 when the doors 3 and 5 are fully opened or fully closed. The construction is such that by means of minor adjustments afforded by the openings I1, 22 and 23 of Fig. 1, the device may be adapted to doors of different sizes and, in general, ample provision is made for all necessary adjustments.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, a support, first and second doors, hinges connecting the doors to the support, a backwardly extended arm rigidly connected to the first door at a place near the outer edge of the first door, a
backwardly extended bracket on the second door,
near to the inner edge of the second door, a backwardly inclined and outwardly extended link, a pivot element connecting the inner end of the link with the bracket, means for pivotally con necting the outer end of the link to the arm at a place intermediate the ends of the arm, a finger rigidly mounted on the intermediate portion of the link and extended backwardly with respect to the link, and a resilient actuating means connected at its inner end to the finger, and at its outer end to the arm, at a place behind the link, the pivot element being located behind a line connecting the hinges, when the doors are closed, whereby the resilient actuating means will operate to hold the doors closed, the pivot element being located in front of said line, when the doors are opened a little, whereby the resilient actuating means will operate to open the doors further.
2. A device of the class described, constructed as set forth in claim 1, in combination with means for connecting the resilient actuating means to the finger-and to the arm, at places spaced longitudinally of the finger and the arm,
thereby to vary the amount that the resilient actuating means opens-the doors.
3. A device of the class described, constructed as set forth in claim 1, in combination with means under the control of an operator for opening the doors a little, as aforesaid, said means comprising a first flexible element extended vertically with respect to one door on the back side of said door, means for connecting the ends of the flexible element to said door yieldably, idlers on said door, over which the flexible element passes, and actuating means under the control of an operator and extended through said door, the actuating means being connected to the flexible element at a place between the idlers.
4. In a device of the class described, a support, first and second doors, hinges connecting the doors to the support, a backwardly extended arm rigidly connected to the first door at a place near the outer edge of the first door and provided in its rear portion with a plurality of openings, a backwardly inclined brace having its inner end secured to the intermediate portion of the first door, the brace being provided at its outer end with a plurality of openings, a securing element adapted to be mounted in any of said openings of the brace and of the arm, a backwardly extended bracket on the second door near the inner edge of the second door, a backwardly inclined and outwardly extended link provided in its outer end with a plurality of openings, a first pivot element connecting the inner end of the link to the bracket, a second pivot element adapted to be mounted in any of the openings of the link and in any of the openings of the arm, a finger projecting backwardly from the intermediate portion of the link and rigidly connected to the link, a resilient actuating means having its ends connected to the finger and to the arm and located to the rear of the link, the first pivot element being located behind a line connecting the hinges, when the doors are closed, whereby the resilient actuating means will operate to hold the doors closed, the pivot element being located in front of said line when the doors are opened a little, whereby the resilient actuating means will operate the doors further.
5. A device of the class described, constructed as set forth in claim 4, in combination with means for connecting the ends of the resilient actuating means to the finger and to the arm at points spaced longitudinally of the finger and the arm.
