Description

Patented Aug. 19, 19572 WALLPAPER AFFIXING DEVICE Arthur C. Smith, Arlington, Va., assigner of onehalf to La Viella T. Harris, Bethesda, Md.
, Anglican@ Februari' L 1951, Serial No, 208,884
This inventionrelates to a wall paper aixin'g device. v
In the hanging of wall paper considerable maneuvering and effort is required to apply the wall paper to .portions of room wall surfaces to which access is difficult by virtue of some permanent obstruction `like a radiator, wall supported brackets, and the like, being contiguous to such portions. The wall paper is Vusually ap plied. to. 'these' non-.readily accessible portions of room wall surfacesby inserting the wall paper sheet between the radiator and thel adjacent wall surface with the pastedv face of the sheet facing the wall surface and thenfpressing against the other face of the sheet adjacentone end thereof by hand to cause adherence of the portion of the pasted face adjacent such one end to the contiguous portion of the wall surface.' The re-l mainder of the pasted wall paper sheet is then made to adhere to the adjacent portion of the wall surface by forcibly wiping a ruler or like stick over the other or ornamental face of the sheet from the attached one end of the sheet to the other end thereof. This manner of applicaf tion has the disadvantages in that the wiping pressure is unevenly applied over the entire area of the sheet, and the ornamental'face of the sheet is marred, resulting in the appearance of bulges and cracks with unsightly demarkations.
An object of the present invention is te provide a wall paperaixing device which is capable of applying wall paper to non-readily accessible wall'portions evenly and with precision and certainty. f e
Another objectief the present invention is to provide a wall paper aflixing device which is sus.- ceptible of ready accommodation to non-.readily accessible wall room portions.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a wall paper afxing device which is simple in structure, and commercially feasible.
Other objects and features of novelty will be apparent from the description taken in conjunction with the drawings in which Figure l is a perspective View, 'with parts broken away and in section, of the wall paper afxing device of the present invention with the handle attahed to the supportI intermediate its Figure 2 is a Sectiunal view-taken en incline 2-2 of Figure 1.-

Figure 7 isa perspective' View showing the device or the present invention applied to the ornamental face of a wall paper sheet in the process of being made to adhere to a wall surface portion behind a radiator.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary View of the right hand portion of the device of Figure 1 but with a paper cutter attached to the other end of the support.
Figure 9 is a fragmentary View of the right hand portion of the device of Figure 1 but with a paper roller attached to the other end of the support.
Figure 10 is a fragmentary view of the right hand portion of the device ofFigure 1 but with a broad knife attached Ato theother end of the support. i
Referring te the drawings, the numeral Il) designates the wall paper ainxing device of the present invention, such device comprising a sup-` -view-taken on the line l port or har H, and a flexible wiping element or brush i2 arranged longitudinally .of said support and ccnnected to said vsupport for movement toward and away from the latter. As shown in Figures l and 4 the backing of the exible wiping elementor brush is detachably secured in a backing member i3 which is arrangedlongitudie vlnally of the support or bar I, the backing meinber being ccnnected at one end to one end'of the support or bar il for movement vabout an axis lil transverse ef the support I l toward and away from the latter. lnterengaging means are on the wiping element or brush l2 for securing the wiping element in a selected positionof its movement toward and away from the support, such means emhodyinga shackle ,l5 .arranged transversely of and' iixedly secured @eine backing member I3 adjacent the .other end thereuf, a threaded bolt i6 xedly Carried by the support or bar H adja-v cent theother end Qf the lattery and having the threaded end projecting beyond the support, the Shacklei being-.Sldabli Connected i0. the 'bolt le by the. 919190.56@ Sluts I3 and I9 in thev legs of the shackley slidablv engaging the Shank 0f the bolt and a Wing nui l1 in threaded engagement 'with the projecting end of the bolt I6 and rotatabl'e into and out Q f bearing engagement with the adjacentportionef the leg of theshackle I5 to thereby releasably secure the wiping element or brush l2 in any selected position of its movement with respect to the support.
On one end of the support or bar I l is a means or stud l20 which is in longitudinal alignment with said one end and projects from the latter, and on the support or bar intermediate its ends is another means or stud 2| which is positioned transversely of the support and projects from the latter, the respective means or studs 20 and 2I being each for the attachment of one end of a handle 22 thereto. As shown in Figure 5, the one end of the handle 22 is provided with a sleeve 23 which rictionally embraces the stud 26. The other end of the support or bar I I, Figures 4 and 6, is provided with a means or an inwardly extending opening 24 for attachment or receiving a handle of a paper hangers implement. The implement may be a paper cutter 25 as shown in Figure 8, a paper roller 26 as shown in Figure 9, or a broad knife 21 for use in scraping walls or pointing up plastering and as shown in Figure 10.
With the device of the present invention having the handle 22 attached to the stud 2| of the support I I, as shown in Figure 1, the paper hanger, Figure 7, inserts the device between the radiator 28 and the adjacent wall surface 29 with the handle 22 extending between adjacent radiator sections 36 and 3| and leaning toward him so that the brush I2 will bear against the ornamental face 32 of a wall paper sheet 33 adjacent the attached end 34 of the sheet 33, and while the device is so positioned forcibly Wipes the brush I2 over the face 32 from the attached end 34 of the sheet 33 to the other end 35 thereof. This results in the adherence of the sheet 33 to the wall surface 29 evenly throughout the entire area of the sheet.
It is to be understood that where the wall surface to be papered is such that requires the attachment of the handle 22 to the stud 20, the handle is readily slipped oft' of the stud 2i and slipped on the stud 20. Also, where cutting of the paper sheet, rolling of the pasted sheet or of the meeting edges of attached wall paper sheets, or pointing up or scraping of the wall surface prior Vto afiixation of the wall paper, is required, all that the paper hanger has to do is to attach to themeans or opening 24 of the support I I the respective cutter 25, roller 26, or broad knife 21. f
Having thus described the invention what is claimedas new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
l. A =wall paper aiixing device comprising a support, a flexible wiping element arranged longitudinallyof` said support and connected to said support for movement toward and away from the latter, interengaging means on said element and said support for securing said element in a selected position of its movement, means in longitudinal alignment with one end of said support andy projectingfrom said one end of said support for attachment of an end of a handle thereto, .and-a second means positioned transversely of said support intermediate the ends of the latter and projecting from said support for attachment Vofanend Vof a handle thereto.
