This invention relates to a cufi button of the separable type in which there is a stud and socket separable connection between the two units forming the cuff button.
In the type of cuff button herein referred to, each of the two units which compose the button have two heads, one to engage the outer surface of the cuff, and the other to engage the inner surface of the cuff so that each unit may be maintained in one part of the cuff when the cuff is separated, such for instance as when the sleeves are rolled up or the shirt is removed. In this type of cuff button the two heads are usually rigid, one with reference to the other, and it has been found that the user cannot secure the two units together unless such rigidity is provided.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a cuff link of the separable unit type in which the outer heads of either one or both of the units may rock with reference to the inner head so as to adjust itself along the surface of the cuff and conform to the angle of the cuff.
Another object of the invention is to provide for a rockable outer head for each of the units of the separable cuff button or link and yet provide for rigidity of these outer heads with reference to the inner head of each unit when the units are manipulated for attachment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a telescoping connection along two shanks, one attached to the outer head and one attached to the inner head of each of the units which may slide, one upon the other with means to permit rocking when in expanded position or rigidity when in collapsed position.
With these and other object in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the units of the cuff button attached and the heads collapsed for securing rigidity during such attachment while the expanded position for rocking is illustrated in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Figure 1, showing both of the heads in outer position where relative rocking is permitted.
Figure 3 is an elevation showing two units of the button in separate relation.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
In proceeding with this invention, I provide a pair of units, one of which is provided with a stud and the other with a socket, the socket having resilient means to yieldingly grip the stud and hold it in attached position. These units are secured together by axial pressure upon their ends to force the stud in to the socket and may be pulled apart by pulling axially of the stud to separate the units. The stud and socket are formed on the inner heads of the units while an outer head is provided on each of the units. In order that this outer head may rock, I have provided a tubular shank extending from the inner head which is enlarged at its outer end while a pin extends across this enlarged portion. A U- shaped shank is secured to the outer head of each unit and straddles this in, the arrangement being such that the head may rock when the U-shaped shank is pulled to its outermost position, and the U portion embraces the pin in the larger portion of the tubular shank, so when slid inwardly the inner end of this U-shaped shank engages a small portion of the bore of the shank and prevents such rocking.
With reference to the drawings, l0 designates one unit of the button and H the other unit of the button, which units are separately connected together. The unit H] has an inner head l2 from which a stud I3 with rounded end extends while a tubular shank I4 extends outwardly from this head and is formed of a small inner bore l5, and a larger outer bore IS.
The unit H is provided with an inner head I!- which is hollow and contains a W-shaped spring l8 which extends into a recess [9 which receives the stud l3, the spring gripping the undercut surface of the stud so as to hold the stud in the socket when the two are forced together.
A pin 20 extends across the larger bore [6 of each of the tubular shanks 14 at a point adjacent the outer end of the tubular shank.
The outer head 2| of each of the units has a U-shaped shank 22, as shown more particularly in Figure 2, secured to it and the bight of this U 23 is of a size to rockably receive the pin 20. The shank also has a dimension which will more or less snugly fit the inner bore [5 of the tubular shank so that when this U-shaped shank 22 is in its innermost position, such as shown in Figure 1, there will be two points of contact, one the pin adjacent the outer end and the other the inner surface of the bore 15 inwardly therefrom so there will be no rocking of the head 2|, and when the head are in this position, it is a relatively simple and easy matter to force the stud and socket formed on the inner heads together. After this connection has been made, the shanks 22 of the heads may then slide outwardly, as shown in Figure 2, so that rocking is permitted 3 and the heads may adjust them elves to the outer surface of the cuff.
I claim:
A cuff button comprising two individual units having cooperating means for separable connection, each of said units having inner and outer heads for holding the unit in a cufi, shanks fixed to each head of one unit with said shanks slidably telescoping one within the other and means to limit their sliding movement in both directions, one of said shanks comprising a tube with a pin extending diametrically across the tube adjacent its outer end, said outer end being of a greater diameter than its inner end, and the other shank being U-shaped straddling said pin and rockable l5 1'718843 about said pin in the portion of said tube of 4 larger diameter, said U shank closely slidably fitting the smaller inner end of the tube when the heads are slid toward each other to afi'ord rigidity of the heads of the unit.
