The'present inventionrelatesin general .to upholstered furniture VVarticles such 'as "chairsliamd sofas, and more particularly to 'articles o"f this type adaptedl to be' readily and 4easi'lyconvertedv to studio or'full-sized beds.
vThe.primary'object ofithe'invention' isthemrovision of a piece ofupholsteredfurniture `of 'the vvtype referred Vto above which embodies individ- Lually upholstered :spring constructions interconnected; and arrangedtoggive'lthearticle,"as^a `seatv"ing unitf'the .appearance and""feel'of"a"piece of 'furniture of standard design andyasarresting iunit, .the appearance' and )feel `df' a :bed '.vvi'thA a comfortable, resilient, full-lengthrcushion structure.

Spring construction units I5 and I6 are individually covered by burlap sheets 28, 29 secured to the rails of the respective middle and back frame sections 'I and 8 so as to permit proper support of cotton or padding material 30 on these spring structure units. This padding material which is folded around spring construction unit I1 and covers the top and bottom faces of said spring construction unit is covered by a single finishing sheet 3| which is secured to the rear and side rails of middle frame section 1, extended over padded spring construction I1, folded around the latter, and sewed to itself on a stitching line 32 arranged parallel above the front edge of middle frame section 1. The side edges of the folded portion of :finishing sheet 3i are attached to the side rails 26 and 26' in a manner similar to burlap sheet 20 to insure the previously described oating support of spring construction unit I1.
Spring construction unit I6, covered by burlap sheet 29, is padded by a layer oi' cotton or padding material 33 folded around the top edge of said unit. This padding material is covered and held in place by a finishing sheet 34 attached to the front, rear and side rails of back frame section 8. This frame section is hinged to the middle frame section 1 by hinges I0, I0 and adjustably held in inclined position by a releasable ratchet arrangement 35 embodying a ratchet member 36 consisting of a horizontal rod 31 rigidly supporting in laterally spaced relation two curved ratchet bars 38, 38'. Ratchet member 36 is pivotally connected to the lower rail 39 of back frame section 8 by a rod 40 secured to rail 39 and extended through bores 4I in ratchet bars 38, 38'. The ratchet bars have their teeth 42 engaged and cooperating with a steel plate 43 which is secured to rear rail 44 of middle frame section 1. The bores 4I in the ratchet bars are arranged below the horizontal rod 31 of the ratchet member to effect by downward movement of rod 31 an upward tilting of bars 38, 38' and release of the teeth of these bars'from engagement with steel plate 43 and by downward tilting of the bars 38, 38 engagement of the teeth 42 with steel plate 43. Ratchet member 36 is actuated by a rod 45 coupled with horizontal rod 31. Forcible shifting of push rod 45 effects upward tilting of the ratchet member and its release from steel plate 43 to permit raising or lowering of the back frame section, and release of the push rod 45 effects gravity-actuated engagement of the ratchet member with the steel plate.
The hinges I I, Il' which connect the middle frame section 1 with the foot frame section 9 have raised ear portions 48 permitting proper folding of the foot frame section on the middle frame section and rearward inclination of the foot frame section in folded-up condition of the frame when used for a chair structure, see Fig. 1.
The foot frame section of the opened-up chair is turned upside down and supported on upholstered arm supports 5, which supports include at their inner ends button-like members 41 adapted to sustain these supports in upside down position above the floor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In an article of upholstered furniture to be used as a seat and bed structure. a seat frame, a folding frame hinged to the front end of said seat frame, a spring structure for said seat frame mounted thereon, a spring structure arranged in said folding frame, and a fabric casing enclosing the latter spring structure and attaching same to the side rails of said folding frame, said fabric casing including fabric attachment means arranged at opposite sides of the casing and secured to the bottom faces of the side rails of the folding frame, said encased spring structure extending through said folding frame and permitting limited axial shifting of the encased spring structure within said folding frame for cooperative action of the encased spring structure with the spring structure of the seat frame when the folding frame rests on the main frame while the article of furniture is used as a seat structure.
2. An article of upholstered furniture adapted to be used as a seat and bed structure comprising a seat frame, folding frames hinged to opposite sides of said seat frame, upholstered spring constructions for each of said frames supported therein and an elongated cover member extended over the upholstered spring construction of said seat frame and one of said folding frames. said cover member extending through said folding frame, folded around the said spring structure and attached to the side rails of said one folding frame to axially shiftably suspend the said spring structure in said one folding frame and permit the said spring structure to be freely rested on the spring structure of the said seat frame when the article of furniture is used as a seat structure.
3. In an article of upholstered furniture adapted to be used as a seat and bed structure, a seat frame, a folding frame hinged to one side of said seat frame, a spring structure stationarily supported by said seat frame and a fabric encased spring construction extended through the folding frame and attached to one of the faces of the side rails of the said folding frame to be axially shiftably supported thereby.
