The invention relates to containers for predetermined types of merchandise and more particularly to paper boxes of the so-called slide type which are adapted to beadjusted to positions in which the merchandise is attractively displayed and which normally serve to contain said merchandise.

The object of the invention is to provide containers of the indicated type capable of being readily adjusted to positions in which the merchandise respectively is protectively contained or displayed, and, at the same time, rendered readily accessible for removal at will.

The invention contemplates particularly the provision of the novel display box which includes means operating automatically to adjust a section of said box to display position.

Other objects will appear from the description hereinafter, and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate an example of the invention without defining its limits:

Fig. 1 is a rear face view of the novel container in its normal condition;

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 with the container sections relatively shifted;

Fig. 3 is a perspective elevation of the container with the parts adjusted to display position;

Fig. 4 is a rear elevation thereof;

Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3;

Fig. 6 is a face view of the blank from which one section of the box is constructed, and

Fig. '7 is a corresponding view of the blank from which the other section of said container is constructed.

In the form illustrated, the novel container comprises an outer section l0 preferably constructed of a single sheet of cardboard or other suitable material scored at to provide a tubular section of predetermined cross-sectional form. In the illustrated example, the outer section |0 consists of a front panel l2 and rear panel |2-a foldably connected with each other along the score lines II by the side panels B. One of the latter consists of sections foldably connected with the front and rear panels, respectively, and connected with each other in overlapping surface engagement by gluing or in any other convenient manner. At an intermediate point, the rear panel |2-a is formed with a slot M which extends transversely across said panel l2-a preferably throughout the width thereof and terminates at its opposite ends in registry with the side panels |3 as shown in Figs. 1 and 6.

The inner section of the container includes a body adapted to contain the merchandise and consists of a front panel l5 with which side panels I6, preferably having curved edges Iii-a at one end, are foldably connected, for instance, along score lines H. The one side panel I6 is foldably connected along a score line ||a with a rear panel l8, and a flap I9 is foldably connected with the other side panel l6 and attached in overlapping surface engagement with said rear panel l8 in any convenient manner as by gluing. The rear panel I8 is foldably connected, for instance, along a score line 20 with an associate panel 2| to which a foldable continuation l9-a of the flap I9 is secured in overlapping surface engagement by gluing or otherwise. Side members '22 are foldably connected along score lines 23 with the panel 2| and continuation l9-a, respectively, said side members 22 preferably being formed with curved edges as indicated at 24 and being foldably connected at 24-0. with a transverse panel 25 as shown in Fig. 3. Foldably-associated flaps and tongues 25-a are foldably' combined with each other and With the transverse panel25 and correspondingly associated flaps and tongues I5-a are foldably connected with each other and with the front panel I5. In addition, tongues [6- 1) and 22-a are foldably combined with the side panels 5 and side members 22, respectively. These tongues and flaps are adapted to be adjusted and tucked into associated relation to provide upper and lower end transverse walls for the inner section of the novel container.

The latter further includes means whereby the upper portion of the inner section 2| is capable of being automatically adjusted to display position in which the contents of the container are not only displayed for sale but are rendered readily accessible for removal at will.

The means referred to comprise a member or panel 26 foldably connected with the upper edge of the panel 2| along a score line 21 and provided at its free end edge with a flap 28 foldable on the score line 29 and cut at an intermediate point to provide a tongue or looking tab 30 which'is also foldably connected with the panel 26 along a score line 29-11 which registers with the score line 29.

In the operative condition of the novel container, the inner section thereof is slidably mounted in the outer section III with the various tabs and tongues properly folded and tucked to provide end walls at opposite ends of said irmer section. The member or panel 26 is folded downwardly on the score line 27 with the flap 28 extending through the slot I4 and between the panels l2-a and 18. Prior to the insertion of the flap 28 through the slot [4, the tongue 30 is folded back on the score line 29-a so as to project over the panel 26 and, in this position, passes through the slot 14 to constitute a restraining projection or hookas will-appear more fully hereinafter.

With the sections of the novel container located in normal position, the member or panel 26 and the flap 28 project between the rear panel [2-01, of the outer section and-the-panel 'lfirofthe inner section with the tongue or tab 30'fo1ded backwardly and extending thru the-slot M and between the panels l2a andl8.

If the inner section is slidably shiftedr-elatively to the outer section, the upper edge of the slot [4 will contact the tab 30 at the fold line 29-.a. As movement of the inner section is continued, the tab 30, in cooperation with said edge .of the slot I4 will prevent the member or panel in saidangular position and also serves as abrace to support said upper portion in said, angular position. In this display position of the container, the merchandise in the inner section is visibly and accessiblydisposed as will be evident from Fig. 3.

The novel. container is easily setup and constitutes anovel device in which the merchandise is not only protectively enclosed but whereby, in

addition, said merchandise may be. attractively displayed and .from which it.may ,be readily re- .moved at will.

Because of its foldable character, .the novel container, in the form of the blanksillustrated in Figs. 6 and '7, or with the sections ofsaidcontainer in. independently collapsed form, may be stored and shipped in relatively large quantities in a minimum of space and may be made from various ,materials-of which cardboard is ,an example.

Althoughthe present inventionhas been de- .scribed in conjunction with a preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that modifications, v

and .variationsmay be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of theinvention, as those skilled in the art will, readily understand. Such variations and modifications, are considered to be within thepurviewand scopeof the claims.

I claim:

1. A shipping and display container for merchandise comprising a slidably-removably mounted open-ended tubular outer vsection having ,front, rear, and side walls,.the rear wall of which ,.has, a transverse slot, and an innersection comprising pivotal upper and lower four-sided vcon- 7 Number 4 tainer parts, said inner section being movably mounted within said outer section and normally enclosed therein, the upper container part having an upper panel foldable rearwardly and downwardly by means of score lines to a point on the rear side and having a flap at its outer end insertable in display position in said slot, said flap having a centrally located tab out out on its surface and foldably -,connected ,to the main :panel :and bendable rearwardly andioutwardly to impede downward movement beyond a certain ;point on said flap when said flap is inserted in said slot.

'2., A;container as set forth in claim 1 wherein "the lateral sides of upper container part are laterallyzcut-away along lines extending from its axis ofpivotal movement, and said inner section has a transverse=score line located on said rear sideat a point corresponding to the lowermost and rearwardmost point of the lateral cut-away sections, enabling the entire upper portion of the inner section to be bent rearwardly to a ninety degree angle when in-display position and thus effectively exposing the contents of the container.

4. A shipping and display container for -merchandise comprising a'slidably-removably'mounted open-ended tubular 'outer section, having front, rear, and sidewalls-the rear wall of which has a transverse slot, and an inner sectioncomprising two pivotal four-sided"container parts,

said inner section being movablymountedwithin said outer section 'and normally enclosed therein, one container part having an upper panel bent back and extending-into -said-slot in shipping and display'positionsp-the lateral'sides of said inner section rbeing cutaway --starti-ng .from a point corresponding "to "the transverse score line located on said rear-side and slanting ,forwardly and downwardly, to a point corresponding to "the uppermost :boundariesof the outer section when in display-position.
