UNITED STATES 'PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. BOYD, OF MOUNT LEBANON, PENNSYLVANIA.
ooAL-Hon.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,743, dated June 20, 1882. Application filed Noi'ember 15, 1881. (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WM. M. BOYD, of Mount Lebanon, county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and lm'- proved Goal-Hod; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specileation.
Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved coal-bod. Fig. 2 shows the shape of the lining cut out of' a sheet.
My invention has for its object .the improving the construction of coal-hods in order to secure increased durability of the bottom and iront, which parts are most exposed yto wear.
My invention consists in fitting a coal-hod with an interior sheet-metal lining ot' such shape as to form a double bottomv and front, and in placing between the two bottoms layers of wire-cloth, sheet-'metal scraps, and paper or papier-mache.
The layer of wire-cloth is soldered to the under side of the liningV in the bottom ofthe hod. Between this wirecloth and the part representing the ordinary bottom is the lling of paper, in which are embedded Waste scraps of sheet metal, with a View to give increased stiffness and durability to the bottom, and to profitably utilize the otherwise useless scraps. A in Fig. l of the drawings represents a Patent, is-
coal-hod of suitable shape. C is the primary bottom. D is the filling'. L is the lining composed of the secondary bottom E, the tongue or front lining, T, and the beveled edge P. Wis the wire cloth soldered to the under side of the part E.
The shape of the lining as cnt out of asheet is shown in Fig. 2.
The part ofthe lining forming the secondary bottom is suitably beveled at its periphery P to permit ot' being riveted or soldered to the sides of the hod.
The tongue rI is similarly bent and attached to the front ofthe hod.
B y this construction I obtain a double i'ro'nt and' double bottom of sheet metal, which donblc bottom is strengthened by the underlying wire-cloth and lling of paper and sheet-metal scraps.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters In a coal-bod, a primary bottom, O, and a filling, D, composed of paper and sheet-metal scraps embedded therein, in combination with an interior lining, L, consisting of the secondary bottom E, the front T, the beveled edge E, and the wire-cloth W, as set forth.
W. M. BOYD.
