IMPROVEMENT IN ASH-SIFTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters'Patent No. 207,948, dated September 10, 1878; application filed August 13, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK S. CLARKSON, of the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Ash-Sieves, of which the following; is a specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The object of this invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and effective device for separating dust and ashes from coal-cinders, 850.; and it consists in combining, with a box or ashreceptacle having a curved bottom and a removable lid, a removable sifting-tray supported partially within the said box, in such manner as to form a guide for the said removable lid, as will hereinafter fully appear.

In the further description of the invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanyin g drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, a longitudinal and a transverse section of the improved ash-sieve.

Similar letters of referenceindicate similar parts of the invention in both figures.

A is a box having parallel straight sides and a curved bottom, which admits of the box being rocked in the sifting operation. The interior of the box A is provided with strips a, for supporting the sifting-tray B, situated at such distance below the upper edge of the box as to cause the said tray to project, and thereby serve as a guide forthe lid 0. The lid 0 is preferably of the same depth as the projecting portion of the tray, in order that it may practically close both the tray and box, and prevent dust and ashes from passing from the box to the tray in the sifting operation.

A special advantage in adapting the upper edge of the tray as a guide for the lid 0 is,

that less material is used in the construction of the box and the character of the work sim box A and removable lid 0, the removable sifting-tray B, supported Within said box upon strips a, and extending above the upper edges of the box, thus forming a guide for the lid, substantially as set forth.
