T. Z. MAGARRELL.
LAMP LIGHTER AND EXTINGUISHER.
1 I0@Z59,645. Patented June 13,1882.
SicuSM N. PETERS. Pho'lo-Liihugmphcr, Washinglcn. n. c,
NITED STATES THOMAS Z. MAGAREELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ANDREW P. W. SKINNER, OF SAME PLACE.
LAMP LIGHTER AND EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,645, dated June 13, 1882.
Application filed March 31, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS Z. MAGAR- BELL, of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Apparatus for Lighting and Extinguishing Lights, of which the following is a description that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a device for lighting and extinguishing lamps without the necessity of removing the chimneys at each operation, and it is also adapted to be used in connection with gas apparatus; and it consists of a tubular handle or staff, the lower end of which is provided with a mouthpiece, while the upper endis bent around and contracted so as to detachably engage with a tubular extension holding a wick and lightingilnid, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Figure l is an elevation of a device embodying my improvement; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the tubular handle, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of the wick-tube and connecting part.
Referring to the drawings,A represents the tubular handle or stafi', which may be of any desired length, the lower end of which is enlarged to provide the mouth-piece a, while the upper end is gradually contracted, so as to detachably engage with the extension a of the wick-tube B, forming a telescopic joint, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The upper end of the handle A is provided with the wrench c which is of the proper shape to engage with the thumb-screw of gas-fixtures for turning on and oil the light.
The wick-tube B incloses the wick a, one
end of which projects from the end of the tube, and at which pointit is lighted when required for use. The lighting-fluid is supplied to the wick-tube by removing the stopple a. The lateral tubular extension a connects the wicktube'with thehandleA. Thewick-tube,as shown in Fig.1 of the drawings, is properly arranged to pass down in the inside of a chimney and light the lamp without removing the chimney; or it may be rotated so as to project upward, as represented by the dotted lines, to light the gas.
When using the device as an extinguisher the wick-tube should be removed and the contracted end of the handle A inserted in the lamp-chimney, the light being extinguished by the operator placing his mouth to the opposite end of the tubular handle and blowing through the same. By this arrangement a device is provided whereby the many lamps of a chandelier may be lighted Without having to remove' the chimneys, which is not only convenient, but also economical, as it causes a great saving in the breakage of lamps and chimneys.
This device. may be constructed of any material suitable for the purpose and at a reasonable cost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the tubular handle A, of the wick-tube B and the tubular extension a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
THOMAS z. MAGARRELL.
