llGHTING-TORCH FOR INCANDESCENT OR OTHER GA S-lAMP s.
srEoIFIoATroN fakin art of Letters Patent No. 651,709, dated. June 12, 1960. application filed January 19,1900; Serial No. 2,004. (No model.)
To aid whom it may concern: Be it known that we, GEORGE FREDERICK IioMBE FOULGER, residing at The Common, Upper Clapton, London, and J OHN' GEORGE GLOVER, residing at 214 St. John street,
Olerkenwell, London, England, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lighting-Torches for Incandescent or other Gas-Lamps, of which the following is a specification. l
This invention has for its object the construction or utilization of gas-lighting torches for lighting incandescent and also ordinary gas-flames, open or inclosed.
The invention is chiefly intended for light ing street and like gas lamps or lanterns in which incandescent mantles or the like are used, and enables the pilot or side light to be dispensed with and the ordinary oil or spirit torch to be employed, as at present.
For the purpose of this invention we prepare the torch proper with a hinge, so that the upper part or flame portion can be canted over the uprising gas-say of an incandescent mantle, cap, or hood-by action of a rod, with which the handle of the torch is provided, after the torch has been inserted into the body of the lamp, the canting being to such an extent that the gas-flame is lighted either through the small quantity passing the mesh of the mantle fabric or by the torch being canted over the top outlet of the mantle for lighting the gas therein from above, this being determined, more or less,as to the height of the glass or mica chimney, if one be used with such mantles. Such a torch to prevent injury to the flap at the bottom of the lantern from careless manipulation or otherwise may be protected at its edges by a rim or edge capping of some non-combustible materialsuch as asbestos, talc, or the like-secured by a metal ring or other appliance.
Our invention is represented on the annexed drawings.
Figure 1 is a section of upper part of gaslighting torch as for ordinary lighting purposes; Fig. 2, an exterior elevation of same with the head canted over, as for incandescent lighting purposes; Fig. 2, a part sectional elevation of the handle part of the torch-stick with a sliding ferrule and retainer by our invention we purpose affixing the socket within a hollow stick and the lift-rod centrally therein.
A is an oil-tank; B, a burner; O, the vent; D, a flame-shield of tubular shape and provided with holes E. F is an outer shie1d,also
provided with holes G, out of line with the holes E, to protect the flame from wind while the torch is being carried by the lamplighter. The two shields are connected by the screwjoint H, which by the shoulder I forms an air-space between them, and this, in conjunction with the holes E and G, constitutes the means of conveying the flame to the gas mixture for ignition.
J is a pin projecting from the oil-tank A, andK is a groove in outer shield F, as part of the slot L, serving as means for the attach ment of the shields to said oil-well and of easy removal for filling the oil-tank or for trimming the wick.
M is the base of oil-well, provided with lugs N for pivot-pins P of the socket Q, on which pivot the torch-head can be canted.
R R are lugs for pivot-pin, connecting the lift-rod S to the torch-head. The lower end of the rod S is pivoted to a slider-block T, free to ride in slot U at the lower part of the torch stick V, which is hollow, as represented.
The hand-grip V is connected to the block T and has on the upper and lower ends projecting lugs X X to prevent the hand of the lamplighter slipping and insuring a firm hold on the hand-grip W in raising or lowering the torch-head.
Y is a latch pivoted at Z to the stick V and capable of being turned, as shown at Fig. 3, to lock the hand-grip W, or in, as shown at Fig. 4, to release the hand-grip W for the free movement of the rod S and torch-head.
a is an asbestos cushion secured on top of torch-head by hollow screw b.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. A lamplighters torch comprising a suit- 1 the bottom of the lamp and having its lower end in position to be grasped by the hand,
able sticker support, a lamp pivoted at one side to the upper end of said stick or support, a perforated shield detachably connected to the lamp and arranged to partially inclose the same, and means for swinging the lamp on its pivot to: cantlth esame to one side of the stick:
or support, substantially as described. 7 a 2. A lamplighters torch comprising a hollow handle, a lamp pivoted at its lower end to one'side of the handle, an outer perforated shield detachably connected to the lamp and arranged to partially inclose the same, aninner perforated shield attached to the said outer shield, an operating-rod located within the handle and "attached at its upper endto substantially as described.
3. A lamplighters torch comprising a hol-' low handle, a lamp pivoted at its lower end to one side of the handle at the upper end thereof, a perforated shield attached to the lamp so as to move therewith, an operatingrod located within the handle and pivotally connected at its upper end to the lamp, a sliding block arranged within the handle and to which the lower end of said rod is attached,
and a hand-gripto which said block is con nected, substantially as described.
4. A lamplighters torch comprising a hollow handle, a lamp pivoted at one side to the upper end of said handle a perforated shield detachably connected to the lamp, an operating-rod located within the handle and attached at its upper end to the lamp, a slidrablerhand-grip to which the lower end of said rod is attached, and a latch pivoted to the handle and adapted for engagement with the hand-grip, substantially as described.
r 5. A lamplighters torch-head pivoted at the lower side portion 'to a socket-tube and centrally connected by a rod to a slider-block and hand-grip, in combination with wasbestos cushionfat the top of the torch-head With a hollow fixing-screw, substantially as described. 7 r i,
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set 7 our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
