SeriaINo. 73 030 The present invention relates to an improved arrangement for yieldably mounting or attaching a hair comb to a hair clipper, thereby 'topermit relative tilting movement between the clipper head and the comb for the purpose of -varying the depth of cut made bythe-clipper during each sweep or stroke thereof. The arrangement is such that the hair comb may be quicklymounted on or detached from clippers of either the handoperated orthe mechanically operated type. When in its mounted position the comb hasa yieldable connectionwith the clipper, such-connectionbeing definedby aspring metalstrip attached at-its ends respectively to the clipper head and to the comb. For the purposeof increasing the yieldability of such connection the metal strip is preformed with an S-shaped bend in its central region. This provides approximately straight or flat terminal regions extending in opposite directions which may be removably mounted respectively on the clipper head and the comb.
Oneof the principal objects of this invention is to simplify the construction of a comb attachment-for hair clippers such as contemplated hereand to improve the efficiency and operation of such attachment.

As seen in Fig. 1 the'assembly NJ at the distal portion- .of the hair clipper comprises a fixed toothedqguard H across, which a tooth. cutter plate I2 is rapidly vibrated by suitable actuating mechanism that isusually housed ina holder or casing: The-hair comb M is approximately the same width as the guard H and it is preferably arranged in a plane that is oblique to. the plane of the guard so that said comb inclines towards the-apices of the guard teeth. There is a yieldable connection between the comb and guard and=this connection such that the operator may readily adjust the comb by sliding it forwardly or. rearwardlyto change-therelationship of'the comb to the cutting mechanism. Also, while perform- 3 ing a cutting operation the operator may tilt the clipper up or down or may cant it sidewise, in order to graduate the length of hair remaining on the scalp. It will be understood that during clipping operations, the comb is presented flat against the scalp and the whole assembly is guided by the operator in the direction for making the proper or desired kind of cut or the length thereof. It is therefore apparent that an operator requires but little skill to successfully manipulate the structure in a manner to neatly trim hair in a graduated length upwardly from the lower region of the neck to the pate or crown of the head; as well as around and above the ears and toward the temples of the head. 1 e 7 In its preferred forms, illustrated in detail in Figs. 1 through 5, the yieldable connection bethat the attaching member may be such as shown in Fig.4 which comprises a metal strip 32 formed with a longitudinal depression 33 of U-section and having outwardly extending side flanges 34 that are serrated at 35 in the same manner as in the preferred form shown in Fig. 2. This metal strip 32 is secured to the back of the comb by small rivets or attaching pins 36, and functions as a sliding guide for the comb when the strip is mounted thereon.

The terminal regions [8 and I9 of the metal strip extend in opposite directions from the S-shape formation and they are generally straight or flat to permit sliding thereof while engaging portions of the guard and comb respectively.
For the purpose of securing the above-mentioned sliding relationship an elongate metal mounting plate 23, having an angular channel 2i therein, is suitably secured to the back surface of the guard ll so that the open portion of the channel is next to the guard and provides therewith a pocket-like guide into which the terminal region 18 is adapted to fit. An off-set 22 at the end of terminal l8 engages the end edge of the channel and holds the strip against accidental dislodgement but at the same time permits the terminal l8 to be forcibly withdrawn, through the channel pocket 2! to disassemble the clipper from the guide. guard plate, or as shown in Fig. '7, open slots 23 are made in this mounting plate for inserting the latter around the shanks of longer screws :24 which replace the usual screws for attaching the guard to the cutter head. After being positioned in place retainer nuts 25 are tightened onto screws2 l to hold the plates in assembly.
In its preferred form as shown in Fig. 3 the second terminal 19 of the spring strip is preformed with downturned inwardly extending flanges 26 of L-section which extend along its longitudinal edges. Between the bend IB'and the adjacent ends of these flanges there is a transverse bend or rib 21 which defines one portion of a latch arrangement. The comb M has an elongate guide 28 the sides of which are undercut as at 29 to provide oppositely extending wings that are slidably embraced by the L-shaped flanges 26 of the terminal region I9 of the spring strip.
The outer or upper face of guide 28 has transverse serrations 3! one of which is engaged by the rib or bend 2'! on the spring strip 15 to latch the comb in different positions within the limits of its sliding movement while being supported on the strip by the holder flanges 26. It will be understood that the comb structure above described may be readily molded from a suitable plastic composition with the attaching member 28 integral with its back portion. An alternative arrangement for mounting the spring strip [5 on the clipper head is shown in Fig. 8 wherein the guard II is formed with a socket 4| extending inwardly from the rear edge of said guard and disposed somewhat oblique to the faces of the guard. Only slight clearance is presented between the socket walls and the 'terminal region l8 of the spring strip to prevent any relative sidewise or longitudinal movement of the comb mounting devices and the clipper.
It is contemplated that the straight end region of the spring strip I5, which assembles with the hair comb M, be wider than the remaining portion of the strip as shown at l9a in Fig. 9. The comb has a guide 42 of channel cross-section secured to its back, said guide having L-shape side edges the lateral flanges 43 of which extend towards each other to define a longitudinal slot or throat 44, to receive the arcuately bent portion. For preventing the comb l4 being movedtoo far rearwardly, the forward tab or ear, which is bent down to lie between the roots of the comb teeth, is formed withan abutment 49 which acts as a stop when contacted by the end edge of the wider head portion Illa. of the spring strip l5.
It is apparent from the foregoing that while cutting hair the comb will glide fiat against the scalp and the clipper may be tilted as desired to graduate the cut, or the clipper may be canted sidewise as indicated by the arrows and the dotted lines in Fig. 5 to facilitate removing hair around and above the ears. As a result of thisgarrangement considerable time is saved and a large amount'of labor is eliminated when cutting hair indifierent-styles; and it hasbeen found i tual experience that only: a few minutes areree quired to complete a hair cuttingoperation. The manner of manipulating the device-is so simple that an inexperienced person is able to cut hair efficiently and satisfactorilywitheither. an automatically operated or a hand operatedhair clipper onv which the present hair comb arrangement is mounted by means of structures-such as disclosed herein. v I
While the improvements-s have been described in detail in the typical-or preferred embodiment, it will be apparentto persons skilled in the art. after understanding the construction and operation of this assembly, that changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or scope thereof. What is claimed is: p r t 1. The combination with a clipper headhaving a toothed fixed guard; of a hair comb arranged in spaced relation to said guard; and means for detachably mounting said comb on said guard for effecting relative tilting movement therebetween and sliding movement of said comb with respect to said guard, said means comprising uide means on said'guard; guide means on said comb; a structurally separate spring metal strip the end regions of which are slidably received by the respective guide means on said guard and said comb; an S-shape bend in said strip intermediate'its guided end regions, said bend defining a yieldable connection between said comb and said clipper head for effecting the aforesaid relative.tiltingmovement; and latch means cooperatively associated with said comb and said spring strip for maintaining said com-b in a plurality of positions within thelimits of its sliding movement.
2. The combination with a clipper head having atcothed fixed guard; or a -hair combarranged in spaced relation to said guard; and means for detachably mounting said comb on said guard for eiiecting relative tilting movement therebetween, said means comprising guide means on said guard; a guide member on said comb having longitudinally extending flanges; a structurally separate spring metal strip a first end region of which is slidably received by the guide means on said guard; inturned flanges on the second end region of said strip and slidably engaged with the longitudinal flanges on the guide member on said comb; the intermediate region of said strip being bent to define a yieldable connection between said comb and said clipper head for effecting the aforesaid relative tilting movement; and means releasably latching said comb in a plurality of positions within the limits of its sliding movement.
3. The combination with a clipper head having a toothed fixed guard; of a hair comb arranged in spaced relation to said guard; and means for detachably mounting said comb on said guard for effecting relative tilting movement therebetween, said means comprising guide means on said guard; a guide of T-shape on said comb; a structurally separate spring metal strip a first end region of which is slidably received by the guide means on said guard; L-shape flanges along the second end region of said'strip in slidable engagement with the arms of said T-shape guide on the comb; a bent region in the intermediate portion of said strip to define a yieldable connection between said comb and said clipper headior effecting the aforesaid;- relative tilt in .imovement serrationsv on-saidT-shape guide; andmeans on said strip engageable with said serraticns for: maintaining said-comb in a plurality of positionswithin-thelimits.ofits sliding movement.- v
4: In combination with a clipper head-having a fixed guard, and a cutter vibratory thereon; of a hair comb arranged .in spaced relation to. said guard; ,and'ineansdetachably mounting said comb on-saidblipper: head comprising a spring metal strip; having approximately straight end regions and being-bent in its intermediate region; means onsaid guard forreceiving one endregion of said strip; and guide means on said comb 'for slidably: receiving a second end region of said spring strip; said'strip defining a yieldable connection ibetween'sai'd comb and. said clipper head. 5. In combination-with a clipper'headhaving a toothedfixed guard; and a cutter vibratory thereon, said guard having a pocket extending in the general-directionof the guard teeth; of'a hair comb arranged inspaced relation to said guard; and means for detachably mounting said comb on said clipper head for effecting relative tilting movement therebetween, said means comprising a structurally separate spring metal strip having a central region defined by a bend of S-shape, and having approximately straight en'dregio'ns extending'in opposite directions from said cen-- tral region, a first of said end'regionsb'eing removably inserted in said guard pocket; guide means on said comb for-slidably receiving a:sec-' ondend regionof'said spring strip; whereby said, comb may be slidingly moved with respect to the distal-end of said clipper head; and latch means releasably maintaining said comb in any of "a plurality of positions Within the limits of its sliding movement.

In combination with a hair clipper; a hair comb arranged in spaced relation to the distal region of said hair clipper; a structurally separate spring metal strip having two reverse bends therein and end regions extending in opposite directions away from the respective bends; means mounting a first end region of said strip on said hair clipper; means mounting a second end region of said strip on said comb for sliding movement of said comb with respect to said strip.
'7. An arrangement as defined in claim 6, including latch means cooperatively associated with the comb and a proximate end region of the strip for releasably holding said comb in diiierent positions within the limits of its sliding movement.
8. In combination with a hair clipper; a hair comb arranged in spaced relation to the distal region of said hair clipper; a structurally separate spring metal strip having end regions extending away from each other; means mounting a first end region of said strip on said hair clipper; means mounting a second end region of said strip on said comb, said last mentioned mounting means being comprised of a member on said strip cooperatively associated with a member on said comb for effecting reciprocable sliding movement of said comb with respect to the work portion of said hair clipper.
9. An arrangement as defined in claim 8 including latch means releasably holding said comb in different positions within the limits of its sliding movement.
10. In combination with a hair clipper; a hair comb arranged in spaced relation to the distal region of said hair clipper; a structurally separate spring metal strip having end regions extending away from each other; means mounting a first end region of said strip on said hair clipper; a guide on said comb slidably receiving a second end region of said strip; and means on said guide effecting a frictional engagement with the coacting second end region of said spring strip.
11. An arrangement as defined in claim 10, wherein the second end region of the spring strip has a wide head portion cooperatively associated with the guide; and the guide has a deformed body portion which engages said head portion for effecting frictional engagement therewith.
12. An arrangement as defined in claim 10, wherein the guide is of channel section with intwined flanges which define a longitudinal slot; and the spring strip has its second end region formed with a wide head guided by said flanges, the portion of the spring strip proximate said head being extended through said slot.
13. An arrangement as defined in claim 10, wherein the guide has a slot to receive the spring strip and there is a wide head on the strip slidable in the guide; the body of the guide being bowed upward towards the slot to effect frictional contact with the head on the strip.

The combination with a hair clipper; of a comb arranged in spaced relation to said clipper; and means detachably mounting said comb on said clipper for effecting relative tilting movement therebetween and also sliding movement of said comb with respect to said clipper, said means comprising guide means on said comb; a structurally separate leaf spring having a reversely bent region defining a first end portion attached to said clipper, and a second end portion slidably received by said guide means on the comb, said bent region providing a yieldable connection between said clipper and said comb for effecting the aforesaid relative tilting movement; and re- 8 leasable holding means cooperatively associated with said comb and the proximate end region of said leaf spring for maintaining said comb in any selected position within the limits of its sliding movement. In combination with a hair clipper; a hair comb arranged in spaced relation to the distal region of said hair clipper; a structurally separate spring metal strip having end regions extending away from each other; means mounting a first end region of said strip on said hair clipper; means mounting a second end region of said strip on said hair comb for sliding movement with respect to said strip; and latch means releasably holding said hair comb in different positions within the limits of its sliding movement.

The combination with the head of a clipper having a fixed guard and a cutter vibratory thereon; of a hair comb arranged in spaced relation to said guard; and means yieldably connecting said comb to said clipper head for effecting tilting movement 'therebetween, said means comprising a structurally separate spring metal strip having thereon a reverse bend intermediate its ends, and having approximately straight end regions extending away from said bend; means removably connecting said end regions of said strip respectively to said guard and to said comb and effecting sliding movement of the comb with respect to said clipper guard, the connecting means for the strip and comb being particularly characterized by cooperatively associated releasable elements on said strip and said comb.
