coma MOUNTING MEANS FOR HAIR CLIPPERS Filed Sept. 1, 1948 fnuenior:
15 I Qqfelmo G imzgi Patented Aug. .8, 1950 UNITED STATES P TENT oFFICE COMB MOUNTING MEANS FOR HAIR CLIPPERS Adelmo Giorgi, Highwood, Ill.
Application September 1, 1948Serial No; 147,165 13 Claims. (01. 30-201) 'This invention relates generally to hair clippers of. either the mechanically operated 7 or the manually operated type. Inparticular, the improvements contemplated herein have special reference to a unitaryassembly .formountinga comb in coactive relationshipwith the operating head ordistal portion of a hair clipper. .Such anwassembly constructedand arrangedin a manner which permitstiltingmovement of the comb at the will of the operator for selectively predetermining the lengthof the cut made by the hair clipper. vAlso. the length of 'thecut may be progressively increasedordecreased for producing the desired .styleof the finished, haircut.
Furthermore, this unitary .assembly is capable ofadjusting the combto a desired position with respect. to the clipper guard and cutter members,.and then maintained in such selected relationship toisaid clipper members for cutting hair at a uniformlengththroughout'the majonpOI- tion of a persons scalp, as for example when a so-called ,crew. or butch style of haircutis desired. Due 'to the selective characteristics of the, present arrangement and its easy manipulation, the operation of haircutting is materially simplified so that such operation may be readily performed by persons unskilled; in the tonsorial art. Hence it is apparent that a skilled barber by the use of the present improvements is able to perform a job of haircutting in a much shorter time than with the usual comb and shears, and will be able-to do this work withoutthe use of a separate comb 'which'requires both hands for proper manipulation. It will'thus be seen that the operator doesnot have to wield a separate comb and therefore 'will have onehand free at all times while cutting a customers'hair.
Other objects, aims and advantages of the present arrangement will beapparent to persons skilled in the art,v after the construction and operation of the improvements contemplated hereinare understood from the within description. It is intended to accomplish the various .Fig. .2 is a sectional plan of the under side of the structure shownin Fig. 1 looking at the same along .the plane of line 2-2 on Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken along the plane of line 3-'3in Fig. 2 and showing the relative position of the parts whenthe restraining means is released;
i Fig. 4-is a view, similar to Fig. 3, showing the parts held-in position by the restraining means; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary front elevational view taken from the left of Fig. 4.
The drawings areto be understood as being more or less of a diagrammatic character for the purpose of disclosing the type orv preferred form of the invention contemplated herein-and in the drawings like reference characters identify the same parts in the difierent views.
The clipper actuating mechanism and its motor, which are housed within a casing (not shown), may be of any-of the well-known constructions generally employed for vibrating the cutter 10 across a vtoothed'guard II which has parallel flat bearing ribs l2 and [3 to receive the sliding cutter and also .has well-defined parallel side edges M which project beyond the correspondingsides or ends of the cutter. These projecting side edges are utilized in the present arrangement 'for supporting the improved comb assembly contemplated herein.
The comb assembly comprises a mounting plate I5 having reinforcing ribs l6 extending longitudinally thereof, and at its ends said plate is provided with upwardly outwardly flared lips I! which are somewhat yieldable to permit the mounting or attaching plate to be readily snapped in position over the end edges M of the guard I l. Spaced from the mounting plate I 5 there is a carrier means for the comb l8. These carrier means may comprisea flat plate [9 that 'is spaced outwardly away from the mounting plate [5 and is preferably arranged at an angleto the plane thereof, so that these plates converge inan outwardly direction toward the distal portion of. thecutter assemblyas clearly shown. in the drawings. The end edges of the holder plate 19 are flanged outwardly as at 20 toembface-the side or endedges 18a of thecomb. This arrangement permits the comb'to beslidingly adjusted in the holder in directions toward and away from the guard of the clipper.
For the purpose of permitting yielding or tilting movement of the comb assembly in a plurality of directions with respect to-the clipper head, the holder assembly is connected to the,
attaching plate is by relatively narrow springlike members 2! of S-shape. For the purpose of providing a unitary assembly of the attaching plate and comb holder plate the spring portions 2| are formed from the same piece of metal as said plates. The sliding or adjusting movement of the comb on the holder assembly may be arrested in difierent positions by providing a plurality of ridges 22 on the back portion of the comb, as seen clearly in Fig. 2, said ribs being arranged parallel to each other and being adapted to be engaged by small ears 23 formed by turning down flanges on the centralregion of the mounting plate I9 so that said cars will A. handle engage between two adjacent ribs. portion 2 1 projects centrally from the rear portion of holder plate i9. Since the unitary assembly is of spring metal the holder plate 19 may be warped slightly in an upward direction by the operator raising or moving the handle portion 24 ina direction toward the clipper head. This will withdraw the ears 23 from the ribs and the combmay then be slid to a desired position with respect to the-clipper head where it may again be locked in place.
' It is desirable under certain conditions to latch the comb assembl in desired relationship to the clipper head for the purpose ofoperating on the customers head to out what is commonly known as a butch o-r crew haircut. This is accomplished by providing a swinging lever 25 which is pivotally mounted upon a rivet 26 on the underneath portion of the attaching plate 55 so that this lever may be'swung to difierent'positions on its fulcrum 26. As seen in the drawings the end oi the lever 25 nearest the distal end of the clipper is of L-shape with the flange portion 21 in a position so that it will engage the comb is when the lever is in the positions shown in the drawings, particularly Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5.
Referring to Fig. 5 it will be noted that'the flange 2-! of the pivoting lever engages the comb between the teeth thereof when in th position shown. By swinging the lever to the right or left the flange portion 21 will be engaged between the otherteethof the comb and in such positions there is a change of angularity between the planes of the comb l3 and the clipper guard Hi. When not in use the lever 22'! is swung to a position nearly parallel with the attaching plate 1 5 in the manner shown in dotted lines on Fig. 2.
From the foregoing it is apparent the assembly unit may readil be fabricated from a fiat piece of metal having a central portion removed to provide thetwo elongated end regions defining the mounting plate i5 and the comb carrier plate] 9, which end regions are connected by narrow spring-like strips which are later formed. in an S-Shaped bendjtodefine the springs 2|. In operation it will be understood the comb is placed'against the scalp and moved in the. proper directionfor cutting the hair with the clipper head. During the cuttingoperation the relative movement between the clipper and comb permits the operator to tilt the clipper tograduate the length of the cut'progressively in the directionflin which the assembly is moved. The'springs'zl permit this tilting and. also allow the operator to cant the clipper with respect ,to the comb by pressing more firmly towards one side. This is useful whenclipping the hair around or adjacent the ears; When a uniform cut is desired over theentire scalp the operator may swing the lever 25" on its pivot so that the lip or latera portion "21 will-engage in'the spaces between the or scope thereof.
4 comb teeth as shown in Fig. 5. This prevents movement of the clipper toward the comb and the cut made by the clipper will be uniform so long as the comb is moved fiat against the scalp. While this invention has been described in its typical or preferred embodiment it will be apparent to persons skilled in the art after understanding the construction and operation of this assembly that changes and modif cations may be made therein, without departing'from the spirit It is aimed in the appended claims to cover all such changes and. modifications.
