UNITED i STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN W. BRIGGS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO S. 85 B. LEDERER, OF SAME PLACE.
ORNAMENTAL CHAIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,466, dated May 9, 1882. Application filed March 13, 1882. (No model.)
1' all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN W. BRIGGS, ot'the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useiul Improvement in Ornamental Chains, and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in ornamental chains made by uniting a number of rings; and it consists in ornamenting such chains with ornamental blanks cut so that the rings will inclose and retain the blanks, so that such chains may be made without the use of solder, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a view of a chain ornamented with blanks inserted between the rings and secured by them. Fig. 2 is a side view'of the same. Fig 3 is a front view, and Fig. 4a side view, of another kind or ornamental chain ornamented with the blanks. Fig. 5 is a front View of another modification of my invention, showing a chain ornamented with the blanks. Fig. 6 is a side view of the same. ,Fig. 7 is a front view, and Fig. 8 a side view, of another modification of my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, a a are the rings or links of an ornamental chain, the fiat sides of which are on a plane with the face of the chain.
1) b are connecting-links passing through the links are, and usually placed at right angles to the same.
0 c are blanks or ornamental designs, made of any desired form, and decorated by stamping, engraving, enameling, orotherwise. These blanks are cut of such forms that the links I) b enter, and, passing through the links a a and around the blanks 0, will securely hold them in place, so that it will not be necessary to use solder to secure the same The ornamented blanks shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5 are provided with two recesses, (l d, in which the links I) I) enter and firmly hold the blanks. The blanks shown in Fig. 7 have three recesses, (l d, into which the two links I) I) enter, so as tofirmly hold the same.
I A large variety of designs can be produced by the use of these blanks c c, and the blanks can be out or ornamented in many ways. I do not therefore wish to confine myself to the forms shown, but wish to use any form or design in the blankso c and in the rings or links a a and b b.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t-- 1. An ornamentalchain provided with blanks secured at intervals by passing the. connecting link or links around the blank, asdescribed, as a new article of manufacture.
2. In an ornamental chain, the combination, with the links a a and b b, of the blanks c c, constructed so that the link, passing around the blank, will firmly hold the same, as described.
In an ornamental chain, the combination, with the links, of blanks or ornamental designs provided i with the recesses d d, constructed to be secured by entering the links into the recesses, as described.
WARREN W. BRIGGS.
