Description

' Oct. 16, 1951 G. J. MARTIN NECK RESIZER AND BULLET SEATER Patented Oct. 16, 1951 UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE George J. Martin, Detroit, Mich. Application July. 31, 1948, Serial No. 41,807
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a neck resizer and bullet seater adapted for use in resizing and centering the neck of a shell prior to the forcing of a bullet therein, the invention being adapted primarily for use in loading shells which have been previously used and particularly that type of shell used in a rifle which has the forward end of it reduced in size compared to the powder containing portion.
Experience has shown that the reduced neck portion of the shell loses its proper size upon being used and also the reduced neck forming portion becomes distorted out of center relatively to the remaining portion of theV shell. The consequence is'that when a bullet is placed in the open end of the neck forming portion this bullet is not properly gripped by the neck forming portion and is not properly centered relatively to the shell so that it is not properly centered relatively to the rifle bore resulting in an imperfect travel of the bullet after being projected from the m'uzzle of the rie.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device whereby the neck may be re-sized .and properly centered relatively to the shell and the bullet centered while being forced within the neck forming portion so as to retain these parts in proper size and proper centering.
It is another object of the present invention `to provide a structure whereby this operation may be performed and whereby the depth of thrust of the butt end of the bullet into the open end of the neck forming portion of the shell may be adjusted and regulated.
Another'object of the invention is the provision of a mechanism for performing the operation referred to and which will be simple in structure. economical to manufacture, durable, compact, and highly eicient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this class of a bushing for receptionv of the large portion of the shell so as to snugly receive it and a bushing centered relatively to the rst named bushing and having a bore formed therein forthe projection of the neck forming portion of the shell thereinto which bore is of proper size so as to properly size the neck which is centered to the first named bushing.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
It is recognized that various modifications and changes may be made in the detail of structure illustrated without departing from the invention and it is intended that such will be embraced within the scope of the claims which form a part hereof.
3 Claims. (Cl. 86-24) Forming a part of this specification are drawings in which,
Fig. l is a central, longitudinal, sectional view of the invention,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawings the invention comprises a structure which is adapted for being supported on a suitable support and to illustrate the use of the invention I have indicated a support embodying the telescopic standards I4 and I5 on which is mounted a bracket I6 which may be clamped on the standard I5 in its various positions by means of the hand wheel II which serves to tighten or loosen a screw. Rotatably mounted in the bracket I6 is a gear I8 which may be -rotated by the shaft I9 bearing the hand rod 20. This gear is adapted to mesh with rack teeth 2| on the rod 22 which carries a head or plate 23.
The invention comprises a tube 9 having the threaded portion I0 at one end on which is threaded an adjusting nut l I which engages in a slot I2 formed in the supporting head I3. The construction is such that by rotating the nut II the tube 9 may be moved upwardly or downwardly relatively to the head I3.
Slidably mounted in the tube 9 and centered relatively thereto is a bushing 24 which has a bore 21 of an inside diameter exactly corresponding to the outside diameter of the base portion of the shell provided at its butt end with the rim or ange 26 adapted to engage the bed or plate 23. This bushing is formed of hardened metal and is machined to close dimensions both on its periphery and in its bore 21 and the bore of the tube 9 is machined to close dimensions so that the bore- 2'I is properly and exactly centered relatively to the tube 9.
Fixedly mounted in the upper end of the tube 9V by a press fit is a bushing 28. The periphery of this bushing 28 is machined to close dimensions so as to t perfectly in the bore of the tube 9 in a press fit. This bushing 28 is provided with an internal bore 29 which is also finished to ne dimensions and properly centered relatively to the bushing 24. Embracing the portion of the bushing 28 is a coil spring 3| which is adapted to engage one end of the bush' ing 24 and normally tends to move the same downwardly of the bushing 9, this downward movement being within the limits of the peripheral slot 38 formed in a bushing 24 and in which engages a screw 39 threaded inwardly from the L i. 3 periphery of the tube 9. The bore 29 of the bushing 28 is sized to the proper size of the reduced or neck forming portion 30 of the shell which it is intended to operate upon. Consequently when the shell is thrust inwardly of the bore 29 while the larger portion of the shell 25 is retained in the bushing 24 the neck forming portion 30 will be properly sized and also brought into center relatively to the remaining portion of the shell.
The tube 9 is provided at its upper end -withthe internally threaded portion 33 in which is threaded a screw 35 having the outwardly pme. I
jecting end 34 whereby the screw may be. ref..
tated. The inner end 36 of this screw'is reduced' in diameter so as to exactly iit the.. locre,.29;of.`
