Turtl'ierob'jtivebf'the pres'ent invention has 5 een 'to provide an electrical' display in 'which a iii'gle' la mp serves a triple function of *lighting bdth a lay sign and also-hluniihating a 'c'ash r'egi'ster.
3 Briefly; the electrical display of the-present inention includes an electrically operated light or rame-mounted above and in' rrent'er the cash 'playconstructed accordance with" this invention.
"-As" illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 'the-electrical V display includes a' bracket 1 0' which 'ispreferably our'itab1edisp1ay for u'se with a cash "register of c-shape having a forward lower lip 'H'which fits "about the 'fi'ont 'of the top"of' a"cash--register I 2 (Figure 4) or other'device on which the display "is to he mounted and thumbscrew 13" (Figure '2) which may"be tightened towardthe 'lip II to atpermanent "andan interchangeable 'dis- 'tach'theO-shapedbracketll] to'the cashregister.

When released, the cross memably employed" although an" elongated incandescent lampmaybeused as the's'ource of'light rays.
The preferred embodiment of the" invention provides a'mounting'ab'oye' acash regi'stef'for a againstthe'lip 18. The cross member 14 acts'as a backing member for the card 19 and'exte'nds lengthwise'of thesign as-sh'own in Figures land 3.
The"upper portioiroif the crossmemb'er' 14 expair of signs, one of which is of a permanent id-tends forwardly-and upwardlyasshownat 20=in nature and one which is readily interchangeable. A single lamp illuminates both signs, the permanent sign b means of light transmitted through the edge of the transparent material of Figure 2, and lugs 2| are afiixed thereto at intervals along the length of the cross member.
Attached to the lugs 2| is a hood or lamp shade 22 of approximately U-shape 'which fits about a the sign, the interchangeable sign directly. Morefluorescent lighting fixture 23 to shade the fixover, the same lamp further serves to illuminate the cash register. Thus, both a permanent and a temporary sign are provided for a cash register, both illuminated by a lamp which further lights the front of the cash register.
With the above and other features and objects in view, the invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings which represent a preferred embodiment of the invention and. in which;
ture. The shade 22 includes a right-hand arm 24 (Figure 2) which, together with the upper portion 20 of the cross member It, forms a channel through which wiring (not shown) may be run to operate the display. Machine screws 25,
which pass through openings drilled in the arm 24, are threaded into the lugs 2| to hold the shade 22 and the cross member [4 in assembled relation.
The shade 22 is preferably made of moderately heavy cast metal and is closed at its ends 20. Along the length of the upper edge of the shade 22 a longitudinal slot 21 is provided into which fits a sheet 28 of transparent material preferably of high refractive index. The transparent sheet 28 is mounted parallel to the lighting fixture 23 so that light from the fixture impinges on the lower edge of the transparent sheet to be transmitted thereby. As indicated at 29 in Figure l, etched or indented lettering or other indicia of an appropriate type appear on the sheet 28 and are illuminated by the lighting fixture 23. The sheet is frictionally held in place in the slot 21, and a series of short lugs or extensions 30 along the edges of the slot 21 maintain the sheet in a vertical position.
The fixture 23 is mounted at either end on supports 3| carried by metal clips 32. The clips 32 in turn are attached adjacent opposite end of the shade 22 by machine screws 33. Th lower edge of the transparent sheet 28 rests on and is supported by the lamp supports 3|.
The single lighting fixture 23 serves a triple function. It illuminates the front of a cash register, as clearly indicated in Figure 4, and alsoilluminates display signs both above and below the fixture. The transparent sheet 28 with its indented indicia forms a handsome and permanent display above the cash register while the demountable card l9 forms a readily changeable display. The sheet 28, and the card 19 and the front of the cash register all are illuminated by the single lighting fixture 23 and yet the fixture is shaded by the hood 22 so that ther is no glare from the fixture 23.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. An electrical display which comprises an electrically operated light, a bracket carrying said light, clamping means attached to said bracket and spaced from said light, said clamping means being adapted to be attached to a device to be illuminated by said light, a hood over said light, said hood being constructed to shade said light and to direct illumination downwardly therefrom, a sheet of transparent material mounted above said light and projecting above said hood, said sheet bearing indented indicia adapted to be illuminated by said light, and a display panel mounted between said light and said device, said display panel being likewise illuminated by said light.
2. An electrical display which comprises an electrically operated fluorescent lamp, an elongated hood over said lamp, said hood being of substantially inverted U-shape cross section, said hood having lamp supports adjacent its ends for supporting said lamp, said hood having a longitudinal slot along its upper edge above said lamp, a sheet of transparent material mounted in said slot to receive light from said lamp along an edge of said sheet, said sheet bearing indented indicia illuminated by said lamp, said sheet resting on said lamp supports and being maintained in said slot in v rtical position, a bracket attached to said hood, and clamping means attached to said bracket for securing said display to a cash register, said bracket being constructed and arranged to maintain said lamp in spaced relationship above the cash register to provide illumination for the cash register, and means for mounting a display card on said bracket between said lamp and said cash register.
3. In an electric display, adapted to be mounted upon the cash register, the combination of an elongated, tubular lamp comprising a light source, a hood over said lamp, said hood being constructed to direct the light downward, a longitudinal slot in the top of said hood, a sheet of transparent material seated in said slot, indicia indented in the face of said sheet and adapted to be illuminated by said light, a vertical panel attached to one side of said hood, said panel providing a backing for cards for illumination by said light, and a bracket secured to the lower edge of said panel, said bracket extending substantially at right angles from the panel on the side opposite the hood and being adapted to be fastened to the top of the cash register whereby the cash register is illuminated by said light.
4. A bracket for mounting a display sign on a cash register, the display sign including an elongated lamp and a hood over the lamp for directing light downwardly comprising; a yieldable panel secured to one side of the hood and extending downwardly from one edge of the hood, a yieldable foot at the lower edge of the panel, a C- shaped bracket adapted to embrace the top of a cash register, means for fastening the foot to the bracket, a lip extending upwardly from the upper face of the bracket adjacent the lower edge of the panel, whereby the panel may be sprung away from the lip and a display card inserted and clamped, upon release of the panel, between the lip and the panel in a position for illumination by the lamp.
