.' NEEDLE GUIDE Filed Dec. 16, 1946 INVENTOR. JWaryfl/f. 624012 ATTD RN EYE Patented Sept. 25, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in thimbles, especially adapted for sewing quilts and the like.
It is an object of the invention to provide a thimble which prevents injury to the fingers, and is especially desirable for use in sewing quilts or the like.
A further object is to provide a thimble which can be made from glass or a plastic compound at a low cost and has no parts which can get out of order or disarranged.
A further object is a provision of a thimble which greatly facilitates embroidering and. quilting, and similar sewing operation.
The above and other objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a device embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the device taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device.
Referring to the drawings, the thimble is shown to comprise a main tubular body or parabolic shell I having a finger receiving recess 5 in its larger end, said body being formed of glass, plastic material, or similar substance.
The upper end of the body I, is frusto-pyramidal in shape as seen in Fig. 3, with four sides designated by the numeral 2, and having a depression 3 which is adapted to receive a needle or other sewing instrument.
The thimble enables rapid embroiderin and quilting and protects the hands from injury by needles or the like.
The thimble can be easily molded and manufactured at a low cost making it available for use by a large number of people.
While the device has been described as a four sided frusto-pyramid with a depression, obviously it can be made in many other shapes, and of many different materials.
The above description is to be considered as illustrative and not limitative of the invention of which modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
The invention having been described, what is claimed is:
A needle guide comprising a smooth parabolic shell having a finger receiving recess in its larger end and a boss extending from its opposite or closed end, said boss being positioned in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the shell and the width thereof being less than that of the shell, said boss having a substantially semi-spherical recess with a smooth surface in the extended end thereof and positioned about said longitudinal axis, and said recess positioned whereby the point of a needle extended through material positioned over the boss on the end of the guide and entering the said semi-spherical recess is directed upwardly and back through the said material thereby facilitating forming a return stitch in sewing.
