EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,454, dated March 28, 1882.
l Application inea september 24,1881. (Moda.)
To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, Rev. JonN A. PRoE'r, of'Stringtown, in the county of Cole and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure I is a side view of my improved table folded. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the table extended. Fig. 4 is aplan view of the bottom of the table. Fig. 5 is atransverse vertical sectional view. Fig. 6 isa detail View, in perspective, ofthe center piece, and Fig. 7 is a detail view of one of the extension-leaves. l
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to extension-tables; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be here` inafter fully described, and particularly pointed ont in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the frame of a table to which my invention has been applied. Said frame, which is supported in the usual manner upon legs B B, has its ends C G connected by two longitudinal braces, D D, provided with cleats E, upon which drawers inserted through openings in the ends of the table-frame are supported.
Gr G are rollers journaled between the sides of the table-frame and the braces D, and H is a brace secured transversely across the tableframe, as shown. Said last brace H is to be of the same thickness as the table leafor plate and the extension-leaves, which will be presently described.
The main table leaf or plate I is provided at its side edges with centrally-located downward-projecting strips J -J, between which downward-projecting studs K K are located, as shown. The studs K project through slots K2 in the brace E, and thus serve, with the strips J, which fit at the ends of said brace, to prevent the displacement of the main leaf.
The extension-leaves L L are provided with diagonally downward and inward projecting or slanting braces M M, extending between the brace H of the table-frame and the rollers G, upon which latter they rest, so that when the leaves are being extended or folded the friction is greatly diminished by the said rollers, which consequently render the adjustment of the table more convenient.
rIhe brace H is provided with downwardprojecting-studs K', forming guides for the braces ofthe extension-leaves.
Upon the, sides of the braces M are secured wedges O, which project laterally under the studs K, upon the under side ot' the main table leaf or plate, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. When the table is folded the plate or leaf I rests upon the center brace, H, and upon the extension-leaves, which are adj usted under the main leaf or plate adjoining brace H, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. When either leaf is pulled out the wedges O of the braces M will bear against the studs K upon the under side of the main leaf, forcing the latter upward and enabling the extension leaf or leaves to be pulled out without frictional contact with the under side of the main leaf, which would be detrimental to the polish and appearance of the extension-leaves. The wedges O are made of such length that when the leaves L are fully extended their outer ends shall strike the ends of the table-frame, thus acting asstops to prevent the leaves from being pulled out, and at the same time their inner ends shall pass from under the studs K, thus permitting the main leaf to drop to a level with the extension-leaves, as shown in Fig. 3.
To fold the table itis only necessary to raise or lift the end or ends ot the main leaf until the inner ends of the wedges Ovmay be pushed under the studs K, when the leaf or leaves L may be easily pushed back to their closed position. i
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 'lhe combination, with a table-frame having I In testimony that I claim the foregoing as lo the brace H, provided with slots K2 and rollmy own I have hereto aiixed my signature in ers G, arranged as herein shown, ofthe main presence of two Witnesses. leaf I, having studs K projecting downward 5 through the slots K2, and the extension-leaves JOHN A. PROFT.
L, having arms M, provided with wedges O, extending under and adapted to hear against Witnesses: the studs K of the main leaf, as herein shown H. VESCHE,
and specified. J. C. LINHARDT.
