HORSE-COLLAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,206, dated March'21, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB STRAUS, a citizen ot' the United States, residingin the city of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a useful and new Improvementin Horse- Gollars for Harness, of which the following is a specification.

My improvement relates to collars for harness, whereby I construct a collar in an improved way, so that the hames may be placed and secured upon it to much greater advantage and with moresatisfactoryresults in their working than has heretofore been done.

The object of my invention is to construct a stiff, thin, and wideband intermediate and between the after waleor body side and the fore wale or small roll of a collar, for the purpose of making a large crease or space for the hames to rest in between the roll and body of the collar, thus securing a greater bearing-surface for the hames upon the collar; secondly, to strengthen the collar so it will retain its shape in all kinds of weather, and be more durable in use, without much extra cost.

The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinal'ter referred to, forms a full specification, wherein are set forth thenature and principles of my invention, together with such parts thereof as are claimed to be new, and are desired to be secured by Letters Patent.

Figure l is a perspective view of a collar, with part of the covering broken away upon the inside of it, showing the band and stitchings and way of its insertion. Fig. 2 is a crosssection of one side of the collar, showing a part of a hame in place.

In Fig. 1, Ais aharness-collar, made of any suitable material for that purpose, and of usual f0rm,'shape, and sizes, except in respect to the wide, thin, and still baud E, which I introduce between the fore wale and after wale of a collar, and by the use of which one is enabled to make as large a crease, F, Fig. 2, for the hame D to rest in as may be desired, to secure the object of this invention and overcome the present great difficulty'in fastening hames on collars, on account of want of room incollars as now made to permit the hames coming close to an animals neck when fastened, and also obtain the use of as large surface of the bodypad, on which the hames rest, as possible.

The stiffening and supporting band E, Fig. 2, is made of leather or other suitable material, of any width, required, and is inserted between the outer coverings of the dift'erentparts O B, Fig. 1, of the collar, and runs entirely around it, where it is secured by two rows of stitches, a b, Fig. 2, which are made through the outer covers and stifl'ening material, parallel to each other, and as far apart as will make a crease, F, around a collar, any width required for any thickness of hames to fit closely into.

Having set forth the objects and advantages of and fully described my invention and its construction, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as in the following:

In an improved horse-collar, the combination. with the fore wale and after mile of the collar, of an intermediate strengthening-band,se cured to the two portions by stitches or othe1 suitable means, whereby the hame-receiving crease or groove may be made wide or narrow all substantially as described.
