Description
(No'ModeL) R. ASHE.
I EDGE BURNISHING MACHINE,
TNEEEE f NITED STATES ROBERT ASHE, OF SOMERVILLE, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE W. COPELAND, OF
MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
PATENT OFFICE.
EDGE-BURNISHING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,860, dated March 14, 1882.
Application filed December 12, 1881. (No model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT ASHE, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, acitizen of the United States, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Edge-Burnishing Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of my improved machine. Fig.2 is a section'and plan view on and below the line w as of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, enlarged, of the burnishing-tool and its holding-block. Fig. 4 is a side elevation thereof to the right and front. Fig. 5 is a vertical section thereof on the line 3 y ofFig. 3. Fig. 6 represents the burnishing-tool and the latch, hereinafter described, detached from the machine.
This invention comprises, first, a reciprocating burnishing-tool and the specific means for operating the same; second, an adjustable foot-rest, whereby the operator is enabled to steady and hold firmly the work by hand in presenting it and holding it to the action of the burnishing-tool.
In the drawings, A is the standard of the machine. B is a bracket or blockfastened to the top of-the standard, and having upon its face suitable ways, b, in which the block (J is reciprocated by means of the eccentric c and connecting-rod c. The eccentric may be run by a pulley and belt from a counter-shaft.
The reciprocating block 0 has attached toit the head D, which preferably is inclined in relation thereto, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, although of course it is not essential that this should be so. This head is provided with holes d, extending from each end thereof inwardly, and adapted to receive the spindle e of the burnishing-tools E, the head being arranged to carry one tool at each end. Each tool is held in place by the latch F, which is pivoted atf tothe head, and swings laterally in relation thereto or at right angles to the line of the reciprocation ot'the head, the bent end fof the latch being adapted to enter the recess f in the shank or spindle of the burnishing-tool.
3 and 4.. To remove the tool thelatch is swung outwardly and the tool taken out or let fall.
iA new one may then be substituted and the latch returned to its original position, each tool being provided with a recess or latch-hole of the same shape and in the same place.
G is the foot-rest. It is at the end of the arm 9 preferably curved, as represented, and may or may not have a roughened or serrated surface. The arm 9 is pivoted to the standard of the machine at g, and has the extension 9 which carries the spring-shank gfiadapted to engage with the teeth g of the curved rack 9 whereby the height of the foot-rest may be varied as desired.
In operation the operator puts his foot upon the foot-rest, with his knee against the standard, and holds his work on his knee while itis burnished. This is of very considerable assistance in steadying the work, and also in enabling it to be done rapidly.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- 1. In a burnishing-machine, the foot-rest G, as and for the purposes described.
2. In a burnishing machine, the foot-rest G and means for varying the height, all substantially as specified.
ROBERT ASHE.
