6 Claims. 1
This invention is concerned with a hair pin opening device. More particularly it concerns a hair pin or bobby pin opening device which may be positioned on finger or wrist of one hand-and permittin the use of the other hand to manipulate the pin in conjunction with the device to spread the arms thereof.
An object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which comprises a mounting adapted to be positioned on a support such as the finger, wrist, or the like, a wall on said mounting and recessed means on said wall'including an upstanding back wall and-a top wall extendin from the upper end of said back Wall, whereby the end of the longer arm of a bobby pin may abut said back wall and is held down by said top wall while the end of the shorter arm of the pin is lifted away from the longer arm of the pm by the operator.
Another object of this invention is to provide I in a, device of the character described which comprises a split loop mounting which may be positioned on a finger, said mounting comprising a flat wall and an upstanding wall pressed out of said flat wall, a top wall extending from the upper end of said back wall and end walls interconnecting said flat Wall, back wall and top wall, said flat wall being adapted to guide the longer arm of a bobby pin as it is pushed into abutment with said back wall and said endwalls are adapted to retain the end of said pin arm beneath the top wall and to prevent the same from sliding sideways out of "engagement with said back wall.
Still another object of this invention is to provide in a device of the character described, a split loop mounting comprisinga'ilat wall disposed opposite the split in the loop, said wall being formed on a central portion thereof with a hollow member pressed out of the plane of said wall, said member comprising an upstanding back wall, a top wall extending from the upper end of said back Wall and end walls, thus forming a slot or bight at its front portion, whereby a bobby pin may be positioned witha portion of its longer arm disposed in contact with said fiat wall and the end portion thereof projecting into said slot or 'big'ht, the end of said arm abutting the back wall "and held down by said top Wall while the shorter arm of said bobby pin is lifted by the thumb and end finger of the operator away from said longer arm.
Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a unitary device of the character described which is inexpensive to manufacture,
her H, preferably split as at 12.
which shall be attractive in appearance, easy to manipulate and yet practical and eflicient to "a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will :in partbe obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in theifeatures of construction, combinations .of elements. and arrangement of parts which willexemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following :claims.
In the accompanying drawing, .in "which is shown various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention;
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of :a'bobby .pin opening device embodying the invention, and shown positioned on the finger :of the user thereof;
Fig. 2 is "a side elevational view of the device embodying the invention;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, with a bobby pin positioned thereon and Fig. '4 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, .10 .designates the hair pin spreading device embodying the invention. Th same-comprises a mount ing in the form of a ring like band for iloop' meme The curved arms or spring fingers I 3 ofthexmember H which terminate short of each other arefinterconnec'ted by a horizontal, substantially rectangular per-- tion M disposed opposite the splitjor space 23in the loop which separates the ends "of said .fingers. The portion I 4 comprises a raised, flat wall or floor portion l5 and a marginal, outwardly inclined rim l6 extending downwardly 1therefrom.
The wall '4 5 comprises parallel side edges "and parallel end edges "I8. .A central transverse upwardly recessed riser or catch portion of member I9 radially offset and adapted to receive the longer arm of a hair pin, extends npwardlyfnom the wall l5 of the portion I l. The member .19 which may be pressed from the wall .15, thus forming an opening or recess [9a in :the wall [-5, comprises :an inclined upwardly .extending'back wall or part 23 parallel to edges ll 'andlextend ing between edges 1 8. A curved :top *wall or part 2 extends from the upperend of wall '20 and-end walls or parts 22 interconnect the walls Zll, 2| with the wall -I5. The forward edge of the top wall 21 is spaced from the wall :I 5, A longitudinal slot 2 3 is formed in the front end opposite the back wall 20 and said s'lot communicates with recess 19a, and is disposed between the :end parts 1 It. will be apparent or walls 22. The member or portion [9 may be disposed intermediate the edges 11 of wall [5. It will be apparent that the slot or bight in member 19 is disposed in a plane which is transverse to the plane of the wall l5.
In using the device It, it may be slipped on the finger of the operator as shown in Fig. 1, the split l2 in the loop allowing for comfortable fit. The device is positioned o the finger with the slot or bight 23in the member -19 facing forwardly. The bobby pirl' 25 which is to be opened," is positioned with the undersurface of its longer arm 26 mov ing along the wall I and its end portion 21 pro jecting into slot 23. The end of the arm 26; abuts 20 of the member [9. The rear or looped portion 28 of ported by the thumb and middle finger of one hand, at the same time urging the end 21 of the pin into abutting engagement with the back wall 28 of the abutment member l9. This leaves the forefinger free to 'lift up the end 29 of the shorter arm- 3!]. of the bobby pin by means of the nail on the forefinger, as shown in Fig. 3,
that the curved upper wall 2| of the member [9 will retain the end 21 of the longer 'arm' 26 of thebobby pin against'upward movement, while the end 29 of the shorter arm 30 is being lifted. Also, the end walls 22 keep the en'ds2l of the 'arm' of engagement with walls 20, 2|.
The depth of the chamber or bight 23 is less than the difference in the lengths of the arms 25, 3B, of the bobby pin. This provides a space between the end 25 of the arm 30, and the forward edge of the top wall 2| of the member l9, when the device is in use and permits access to the end 29 of the arm.3fl for liftin purposes.
' The length of the slot 23 permits easy introduction of the end 21 of'the arm 26 of the bobby pin, particularly when the user is in a .hurry.
It is understood that the member I I may be of such dimensions and shape as to permit mounting the device on the wrist, arm or any other suitable support. I
Therirn i5 is adapted to raise the fiat wall l5 above the finger or other support on which the device is mounted. 5
The member -I 9 may be readily formed by drawing the'wallupwardlyby means of suitable dies. back wall 28, top wall 2|, and end walls 22 in a single operation. Also, the
orthe like; to form the entire device. may be made in a single operation by die casting or molding procedures. If desired, the member 19 may be made up separately and then secured to the flat wall l5 of the mounting H by soldering, etc.
It will thus be seen that there is provideda devi'ce'in which the several objects of this invention' are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made ofthe above invention, and as various might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to'be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
