This invention relates to improvements in paper fastening elements, commonly known as paper clips.

It is one of the principal objects of the invention to provide a clip of this character which is of simple, efficient, and inexpensive construction, made out of sheet metal by a simple punching and forming operation and one which will securely attach a number of sheets of paper together and one which will have perfectly smooth outer surfaces to prevent scratching the surfaces of desks or the like over which it is passed.

These and other objects will appear as my invention is more fully hereinafter described in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and finally pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawing Figure l is a perspective view of a paper clip made in accordance with my invention.

Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention.

Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along the line 44 of Figure 3.

Figure 5 is a perspective view of the form of the invention illustrated in Figure 1 in engagement with a corner of a plurality of sheets of paper.

Figure 6 is a sectional view taken along the lines 6-45 of Figure 5.

Figure 7 is a plan view of a blank cut, notched and provided with fold lines after stamping out 1 of sheet metal and before it is bent into final shape.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings.

In Figure 1, reference numeral 1 indicates generally the main body of the paper clip which consists of a single piece of blank material folded over on itself as shown to form a base plate 2 and inwardy turned end portions 3 and 4 which are punched as at 5 to provide downwardly a projecting pointed tongue 6.

The base plate 2 of the clip is formed with an elevated portion as indicated at I to form a recess 8 on the underside of the base plate.

In both forms of the invention, the elevated portions of the base are formed with rectangular apertures 9 to receive either the tongues 6 punched out of the corner portions 3 of the form of the invention illustrated in Figure 1 or the pointed tongues l0 formed as extensions of the outermost ends of the corner portions 3A and 4A of the form of the invention illustrated in Figure 3. The tongues Ill are bent downwardly about the fold lines IIJA across the corners. The corner portions in both forms of the invention are doubled over along diagonal fold lines I I so that either the tongues 6 or the pointed tongues [0 will be directed into the rectangular apertures 9. The base plate is notched as at [2 intermediate the corner portions to be folded.

In uniting the corners of sheets of paper stacked together, the corners of the sheets are placed between the corner portions and the base plate. Following this, said corner portions in either form of the invention are pressed downwardly until the tongues thereof pierce through the paper and extend into the apertures 9 of the base plate. If the combined thickness of all the paper disposed within the clip is not too thick, those portions of the tongues extending below the apertures in the base may be turned at right angles to themselves to lock the corner portions into engagement with the base plate.

While I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

I claim:

A paper clip comprising a base plate having two adjacent corner portions bent inwardly toward each other to overlie the base plate in spaced relation thereto, said base plate having a triangular shaped elevated portion between the fold lines of said corner portions comprising the major portion of the area between the fold lines, pointed tongues formed integral with and on the apex of said inwardly bent corner portions, rectangular apertures formed in said triangular elevated portion and adapted to receive and be penetrated by said tongues.
