PAPER FXs'TENER Filed March 5, 1943 Zhwentor Patented Aug. 31, 1943' 1 PAPER, FASTENER Alex Gelfand, Bronx, N. Y., assignor to Peerless Key-Imperial Mfg. C0,, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application March 5, 1943, Serial No. 478,165
, t 2 Claims.
This invention relates to paper fasteners of the type composed of only two parts, relatively, a base having narrowed end extensions, and the other a ,compressor provided with openings receptive of the extensions.
One of the objects is to provide a fastener sim- ;ple and inexpensive to manufacture, easily applied or removed, and capable of extension to accommodate widely varying thicknesses of paper assemblages.
A further feature is in the provision or 9. ms-
itener thatis actually looked when in operative position, and cannot damage the finest of papers, the parts of the fastener being preferably made of non-corrodable material; i
Another purpose is to produce a paper fastener of relatively light, thin substance, stiffened and Y rendered substantially inflexible by reason of .-a j plurality of parallel indentations embossed on the surface.
These and other advantageous objects are at,-
tamed b the novel construction, combination element, and
Figures 4 and 5 are perspective views of these elements, shown in position for cooperative attachment. i Referring to the drawing, the numeral I0 indicates broadly the base of the fastener, composed of a body portion I I having spaced flexible prongs or tongues 12 capable of being readily bent at applied to right angles to the body so as to pas through openings l3 in the bundle of papers.
The body portion, and tongues are preferably heavily embossed longitudinally at and 15 to increase the strength thereof and impart rigidity to the, same.
,The compressoror protector plate 16 is composed of preferably an elongated rectangular, relatively flat plate, provided at each end thereof with a pair of angular and upwardly extending prongs l1 and I8, projecting in the direction towards the adjacent end of the Plate.
These prongs are struck out of the plate, thereby producing openings I 9 and 2|! which are adapted to receive the longitudinally embossed tongues 12 of the base 10.
The upwardly angular extending prongs H, which are preferably located nearest the end of the plate l6, are provided with serrated edges 2 I, corresponding with the serrations in the openings I9 in the plate from which the prongs H were formed. t
The compressor plate I6 is also embossed longitudinally at 2| and 22 to increase the strength thereof and impart rigidity to the same.
The base In and the compressor plate I6 may be formed of any suitable material which lends itself well to manufacture, as for instance, Celluloid, pressboard, fibre, fabric or thelike.
In practice, the flexible prongs l2, of the base H], are projected through the openings l3 in the papers; on the side of the latter, normally forming the top, i placed the compressor plate Ill.
The ends of the prongs l2 are passed through the serrated openings l9 and I9, turned outwardly I over the tops of the serrated prongs I1 and H, and over the plate l6 and then the ends of the prongs are passed through the openings 20 and 20 and under the angular prongs I8 and plate [6. Thus, theprongs are temporarily locked in position, but can be raised for the insertion or removal of papers.
It is to be noted that the prongs are covered by other parts of the device, and that no projections extend to interfere with the relatively smooth surfaces of the entire fastener.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as dscriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which, obviously, embodiments may be constructed, including man modifications, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention herein set forth and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described the invention and set forth the manner of its construction andapplication, what is claimed as new and sought to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. A fastener comprising a compressor plate having a pair of ends, apair of adjacent, angularly directed, parallel, upwardly extending prongs adjacent each end of said plate, said prongs being struck out of the materialof said plate to define openings in the plate adjacent said prongs, each pair of prongs being directed toward the adjacent end of the plate, serrated edges on that pron of each pair which is nearest the adjacentend of the plate, and a fastener base provided with a pair of tongue portions, each, tongue portion being adapted to be passed upwardly plate to define openings in the plate adjacent said 5 prongs, eachpair of prongs being directed toward the adjacent end of the plate, and a fastener base provided with a pair of tongue portions, each tongue portion being adapted to be passed upwardly through the opening from which one prong was struck, and to be bent over said prong and downwardly under the adjacent prong and through the opening from which the said lastnientioned prong was struck.
