To all whom it may conce-rn Be it known that I, ARMIs'rEAD BARKs- DALE, of Statesville, in the county of Iredell and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Folding Barrel; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

. The object of my invention is to provide an improved folding or collapsible barrel or hogshead for use in transporting tobaccd and other dry substances. The body or cylindrical portion of the barrel is composed of staves, and is divided into three sections, the hoops or bands of each section being hinged to the others, so that the sections may be folded flat one upon another, and secured together with the heads for economizing space in shipment or storage.

The special features of improvement are the means for attaching the heads to the body of the barrel when the latter is set up for use, and the construction of the hinges whichallows the sections to be folded in the manner hereinafter described.

In accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of the barrel or hogshead. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one end of the body of the barrel .as it appears when extended flat. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of one end of ,the barrel. Fig. 4 includes an end view and section of a part of the barrel. Fig. 5 is a side view of the parts of the barrel folded and secured together for shipment.

"The staves a, composing the body of the barrel, are straight, so that there is no bulge, as in the ordinary barrel. The staves are divided into three sections, A A2 A, and are secured by rivets to a series of metal hoops or bands, B4B2 B3. The bands B' and B2 are hinged together by means of a narrow link, O, and the bands B2 and B3 by a wide link, D. The outer ends of bands B 'and B3 have plates or strap-hinges b attached, which are provided with eyes adapted to t together and receive a locking-bolt, E, as shown in Fig. l.

The barrel-heads F are preferably constructed in two parts, which are secured to circular Wooden hoops G by means of nails or rivets c,

said hoops being for this purpose laid edgewise against the face of the heads, flush with their perimeter, and the nails driven through them perpendicular to their planes, as shown in section, Fig. 4.

For attaching the heads F to the body of the barrel l employ screw-bolts d, having thumb-nuts, Figs. l and 3, the bolts passing transversely through the hoops and staves, as shown in Figs. l and 3.

To fill the barrel one of the heads F is 'rst detached by screwing the thu in b-nuts off bolts d and drawing out the latter. After filling, the head is replaced and secured as before.

After the barrel has served its purpose in transportation of tobacco or other material it is knocked down and packed for'reshipment to the party from whom it was received. To do this the barrel is laid on its side, as in Fig. 1, and the heads F removed by taking out screws d.' The bolts E are then drawn out of the socket-plates b. Section A is then folded back upon section A2 and section A3 upon section A', as shown in Fig. 5, which the relative lengths of the hinge-links O and D permits* that is to say, the length ot' links D equals the thickness of the staves et, but link C is shorter. One of the heads F is next placed on the top and the other on the bottom, and the whole secured together by screw-bolts, Fig. 5. In this form the barrel or hogshead can be handled with convenience and occupies but onetenth'the space of one that is filled.
