Be it known that I, 'lnnoioonn F. W. SCHMIDT, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a collapsible box,l preferably of rectangular shape and of such size and construction that the sides may be folded together and packed within a removable stretching bottom which will serve as a bod uv for the box, and the cover of the shipping-box will also serve as a cover for the packing-box. Several advantages are derived by this construction. tity of these boxes may bey kept in stock, occupying but little space, and they can be readily set up when they are to be used for packing material. They can be shipped from the manufacturer to the user in the shippingbox condition at very much less cost than when they are set up in form to receive packages. Both of these advantages are very inaterial in the manufacture and use of said box.

c d represent the ends of the box-body. They are made with a central flexible joint e, so as to serve as a hinge for the folding of thev end sections upon each other to collapse the body of the box. The body is preferably made of strawboard and may be covered with a glazing or finish Which When made of tough material will serve as a hinge or binding material to hold the end sections of the box together. As a feature of my invention, hoivever, I show a strengthening hinge-piece g, which is the end of the tape It, pasted across the sections c d, as shown in Figs. l and a, the end of the tape passing through and out- A large quan# side of the box; and these tape ends serve at the same time as a handle.

D represents the stretching bottom, made like the ordinary cover of Aa box and adapted to iit into the inside of the box, as shown in Fig. 5. v

i represents a hole pierced through the bottoni of the box to afford a convenient means for lifting it out of the body of the box.

E represents a flexible bottom, preferably made of muslin or paper and pasted to the side of the box in the usual manner. This serves two purposes. It allows the body of thc box to be readily collapsed, and, second, it affords a support for the stretching bottom D.

F represents the cover of the box. It iits over the shipping-box or stretching bottoni D, as Well as the box, set up in condition to receive packages. The tapes 7i may be tied together to bind the cover on, as Well as to serve as a handle.

The stretching bottom D is made of stiff material, preferably straivboard, so that the Weight of the material packed in the box Will be equally distributed over the flexible bottom, which would otherwise stretch and strain the hinges, tending to draw them inward, as shown in Fig. l; but by making the bottom and sides of stiff material they effectu ally brace the box in position and reinforce the same at the bottom, Where the weight of the packing has to be sustained.

I claiml. A collapsible box having hinged sectional sides reinforced at the hinges by the strengthening-pieces g, as described, a ilexible bottom, and a rigid removable bott-om made of stiff material and having upturned flanged edges lying parallel with and against the sides of the box, substantially as described.

2.l In combination with the collapsible boxbody A having hinged sectional sides, the tapes 7L attached to the inner adjacent edges of the hinged sections and at their free ends projecting through the sides to the exterior of the box, substantially as described.
