/n/l/E/l/ra/e fs rf/P J/E/h/qaa Patented Feb. 20, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CARD R LICENSE RECEVING ENVELOPE AND TAB Lester L. Sherwood, Banning, Calif. Application October 8, 1948, Serial No. 53,547
3 Claims. l
My invention relates generally to identification card or license containing envelopes and tabs therefor, and has for its principal object t0 provide a simple, practical and efcient flexible hinge connection between the envelope and tab, and the construction of which connection is such as to enable the connected elements to be readily connected and disconnected when assembled or interchanged.
The forms of flexible connections hereinafter shown and described are improvements on the connections disclosed in U. S. Letters Patent #2,416,026, issued February 18, 1947, and #2,451,122 issued Oct. 12, 1948.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a plan View of one form of my im proved envelope and tab.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of a invention.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section taken on the line 4--4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a portion of a modification and Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail section taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing, particularly Figs. 1 and 2, lil designates a conventional transparent envelope of the type used for holding the license and identification cards carried by many persons, for instance, motor vehicle drivers, air-plane pilots, and the like, and formed adjacent one end (or side) oi the envelope is a plurality of T-shaped slots or apertures il the outer ends of which are open at the adjacent edge of said envelope.
The tab T, which is exibly and detachably connected to the envelope, may be formed from any suitable thin sheet material, preferably leather, and shaped so as to provide a pair or" members i2, identical in size and shape, preferably rectangular, with one member lying upon the other and their marginal edges suitably connected, preferably by a row or rows of stitching i3. Members l2 are connected on one side, by narrow straps, which, when the tab is folded and said members connected, form short loops lil, which, when inserted in slots Il in the envelope, fo-rm a very simple and practical hinge connection between the said envelope and tab,
modified form of the The faces of the tab may bear the name, tials or monogram of the owner or carrier of the envelope, or where said envelopes are distributed by business establishments, the tabs may bear advertising matter.
In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the transparent envelope I5 is provided adjacent one side edge, with T-shaped slots i6, which receive short looped straps Il which connect the spaced parallel straps I8. Straps I8 are disposed between the layers i9 of a piece of thin ilexible material, preferably leather, folded double to form the tab, said straps being disposed adjacent the fold between said layers and with looped straps il projecting through slots 20, formed in the folded edge of the tab. The outside and end edges of the material forming the tab are suitably connected, preferably by a row or rows of stitching 2l. The modified structure illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 is designed to detachably connect two or mo-re license holding envelopes, one, A, having near o-ne end or edge, a plurality of T-shaped slots 22, open on the edge of the envelope, and an envelope B having slots 23 adjacent its end or edge.
Tab 24 is composed of two identical layers of flexible material such as leather connected on one side or end by integral narrow strips 25, and formed in said tab inwardly from the ends of said straps are slots 26.
In connection this form of tab with envelopes such as A and B, straps 25 folded double are inserted downwardly through slots 23 and thence outwardly beneath the adjacent edge of the envelope, thence upwardly through slots :26 in the tab and the connected ends of said straps provide loops 2l, which pass through the T-shaped slots 22, thus forming simple and effective flexible hinges between the tab and both envelopes.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a card or license receiving envelope or tab that is simple 1n structure, inexpensive of manufacture, very "effective in performing its intended functions and said envelope and tab being provided with a readily releasable flexible hinge connection.
Minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved card or license receiving envelope and tab, may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a transparent envelope provided adjacent one edge with spaced T-shaped slots the outer ends of which open on the adjacent edge of said envelope, of a tab composed of a single piece of material folded double and exible loops projecting from one edge of said tab and passing through the slots in said envelope.
2. The combination with a transparent envelope provided adjacent one edge with a plurality of spaced T-shaped apertures, of a tab composed of two layers of thin material and flexible loops secured to and projecting from one edge of said tab, which loops pass through the apertures in said envelope and the length of which loops is such as to provide a substantial space between the adjacent edges of said envelope and tab. I
3. The combination with a plurality of envelopes. provided adjacent corresponding edges with 4 spaced T-shaped slots the outer ends of which are open at the adjacent edges of said envelopes. of a tab and straps projecting from one edge of said tab and'passing through the slots insaid Y envelopes.
