This application is a substitute for my abandonedapplication, filed on October 30, 1944, Serial Number 560,936.

More specifically, the present invention, proposes the construction of a device consisting of a hair brush of substantially conventional structure and having a'handle, the brush being provided with a longitudinal guideway and the handle being provided with 'a longitudinal passage- Way ..in-line with the guideway, the device further including a comb having, a. guide portion adapted to slide the'guideway, and a handle ad'a'pted'to slide'in'tne passageway.

A further object proposes a device as aforesaid in which means are provided for adjusting the position of the comb relative to the brush.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of the combination comb and hair brush constructed in accordance with this invention.

The combination comb and hair brush, according to the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5, includes a brush I having a body II and a handle l2, these parts being made of wood, plastic or other suitable material. The body has a longitudinal central guideway or groove l3 somewhat dove-tail in cross section and opening through the bottom face Id of the body. The handle has'an enclosed passageway l formed in end alignment with the guideway IS. The bottom and side faces of the body l0 are formed with tufts of bristles IS.

The operation of-th-edevice is as follows:

When the comb and brush are separated, each may-be used separately for its intended function. When the comb and .brush are assembled, the hair may be combed and brushed by one operation, eliminating the necessity of first combing the hair and then brushing it.

An added feature of the present invention is that the brush forms a housing for the comb, enabling the comb and brush to be compactly packed. This has especial merit when the comb and brush form part of a small traveling kit which small size is essential. Another feature is that the comb is provided with a handle. This not only provides means for holding the comb when the comb is being used separately from the brush, but also helps to stiffen the comb when it is assembled with the brush, preventing breaking of the comb when the combined comb and brush are employed rigorously.

A device constructed in accordance with a modification of this invention is shown in Fig. 6. It distinguishes from the device of Figs. 1-5 in that the handle l2 of the brush It is provided with a recess 22 in which is disposed a spring.

The latch has a tongue 25 and the handle ll of the comb along the back thereof is provided with a row of notches 26 adapted to coact with the tongue 25 to hold the comb in various adjusted positions relative to the body Ill. The purpose of this is so that a portion of the comb can extend beyond the brush when desired, so that it may be used for parting the hair or for individually combing small portions of the hair without simultaneously brushing it. The latch, being of spring steel, stays in position in the notches except when the comb is pulle l strongly, the rounded sides of the notches and latch tongue permitting the tongue to then ride out of the notches to release the comb. In other respects this device functions similarly to the device of Fig. 1.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. In a combined comb and hair brush having a brush body formed at one end with a handle and with a longitudinal dove-tailed groove opening to the end thereof opposed to the handle and a comb having a dove-tailed back portion slidably engaged into said dove-tailed groove, the handle being formed with a passageway arranged in end alignment with the groove of the brush body; a comb handle integrally formed with the end of the comb adjacent the handle of the brush body and slidably received in said passageway, said comb handle being formed along one side with a plurality of spaced notches, and means within the handle of the brush body for selectively engaging said notches of said comb handle for releasably holding the comb in desired shifted position relative to the brush body.

2. In a combined comb and hair brush having a brush body formed at one end with a handle and with a longitudinal dove-tailed groove opening to the end thereof opposed to the handle and a comb having a dove-tailed back portion slidably engaged into said dove-tailed groove, the handle being formed with a passageway arranged in end alignment with the groove of the brush body; a comb handle integrally formed with the end of the comb adjacent the handle of the brush body and slidably received in said passageway, said comb handle being formed along one side with a plurality of spaced notches, and means within the handle of the brush body for selectively engaging said notches of said comb handle for releasably holding the comb in desired shifted position relative to the brush body, the handle of the brush body bein formed with an internal recess extending from one side of said passageway, said means comprising a spring latch having one end anchored within said recess, and a tongue formed on the free end of said spring latch to selectively engage said notches.
