Description

June 13, 1950 R. c. PATTERSON 2,511,735
HOLDER FOR WRITING IMPLEMENTS Filed March 10, 1949 Inventor Robert 6. Patterson fimaafiizm WW Em Patented June 13, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in holders for slender writing implements such as pens, pencils or the like, and the principal object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple, inexpensive, and a highly pleasing holder whereby such implements ma be conveniently and effectively supported when they are not in use.
In particular, the invention resides in the provision of a holding device which is adapted to function in association with a conventional pen or pencil as a desk set, and wherein the pen or pencil may be quickly and easily applied or removed.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in the simplicit of construction, in its pleasing appearance and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the construction and arrangement of parts as shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the invention and,
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional View thereof.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing in detail, the invention consists of a holder for writing implements, such as pencils, pens, etc., the holder being designated generally by the reference character Ill and embodying in its construction a unitary strap of suitable material having a horizontal intermediate portion l2 which constitutes a base whereby the entire device may be positioned upon a level surface, such as for example, the top of a desk.
One end portion of the strap from which the holder is formed is angulated so as to provide an upwardly and rearwardly extending member M at the front of the base l2, the upper end portion of this member being formed with a V-shaped notch It to receive a V-shaped liner I8 of resilient material such as rubber, or the like.
The remaining end portion of the strap from which the holder is formed is arcuated upwardly to provide a back member 20 and a resilient pad 22 is suitably secured to the front surface of this back member as will be clearly apparent.
When the invention is placed in use, a pencil 24 or the like, may be applied to the holder in an inclined position by inserting an intermediate portion of the pencil or other implement in the V-shaped liner l8 and engaging the lower end of the implement with the pad 22, in which manner the implement may be conveniently and efficient- 1y supported in readiness for use. The resilient pad 20 and the resilient liner I8 will effectively prevent the implement from being scratched by the holder and vice versa, and will also assure that the implement is firmly retained in its position.
Although in the accompanying drawing the device is shown as being adapted to accommodate only one implement, the holder may, of course, be wider and may be provided with additional notches I6, inserts l8 and pads 22, so as to accommodate several implements, if so desired.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts ma be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A device for holding slender writing instruments, comprising a unitary strap of material having a horizontal intermediate portion constituting a base, one end portion of said strap being angulated to provide an upwardly and rearwardly extending member at the front of said base, the upper end portion of said member being formed with a V-shaped notch, a V-shaped liner of resilient material provided in said notch and constituting a seat for a writing implement, the remaining end portion of said strap being arcuated upwardly and providing a back member on said base, and resilient pad mounted on the front surface of said back member to supportably engage the lower end of a forwardly inclined implement disposed in said seat.
