Description

Juiy 25, 1950 R. T. H lNE FLUSH MOUNTED PENCIL CLIP Filed May 3, 1946 INVENTOR. EOE-E27 7. H/NE ATTD RN EYS Patented July 25, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FLUSH MOUNTED PENCIL CLIP Robert T. Hine, Johnson City, Tenn. Application May 3, 1946, Serial No. 666,993
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to clips for fountain pens and lead pencils and other similar articles, that are adapted to be carried in a, garment pocket.
An object of this invention is to provide a clip that is adapted to lie flush with the outer sur face of the article to which it is attached, thus, in effect, removing the clip while the article is in use.
Another object of this invention is to provide a clip which may be easily engaged with or disengaged from a, garment pocket and one which will more firmly retain the article to which it is attached in position, since the gripping action is performed along a substantial length of the clip and the gripping nib is seated in a depression thus increasing the gripping surface of the nib.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof and Figure 3 shows the manner in which the clip is depressed for attaching to a garment pocket.
Referring more in detail to the drawing the reference numeral 10 designates a pencil which as shown may be of the automatic type having the cavity l2 for the reception of a supply of leads 14 or it may be a fountain pen or ordinary lead pencil or any other article that may be carried in a garment pocket.
The pencil I is provided with a reduced portion on one end thereof for the reception of a cap l8 for securing clip 24, retaining an eraser 20 therein. Extending longitudinally of this portion I6 is a groove 22 for the reception of an end of the spring clip 24. A shoulder 26 formed at the junction point of the portion IS with the main body 28 of the pencil I0 is also grooved at 30 to receive the offset 32 in the clip and the groove communicates with the groove 22, and a groove 34 which extends longitudinally of the body 28 for a substantial portion thereof to receive the clip 24, The end of the clip 24 is provided with a gripping nib 36 which lies in a seat 38 formed at the end of the groove 34 thereby permitting the clip to lie flush with the outsurface of the pencil I0 since the groove 22 and seat 38 are of sufficient depth to permit such action.
Formed at an intermediate point of the groove 34 between the gripping nib 36 and the cap I8 is a concave depression 40 which is deeper and wider than the groove 34 so that when a, finger 42 of a person's hand is pressed on the clip 24 as shown in Figure 3 the nib end of the clip will be raised to permit the clip to be engaged with or disengaged from a garment pocket.
It is believed that the operation and construction of the clip will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction, arrange ment and combination of parts may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described, comprising a pocket carried article, a clip for said article extending longitudinally thereof, means for securing one end of said clip on said article, a gripping nib on the free end of said clip, a concave depression in said article underlying said clip intermediate said fixed end and said nib, said clip bearing against said article on opposite sides of said depression whereby movement of the clip into said depression will cause the gripping nib to be moved away from the article so as to adapt the clip to be readily engaged or disengaged from the upper edge of a pocket.
