The chair top 23 is of U-shaped configuration and hasarm portions 3! and a raised back 32. In the bottom of the chair top is a U-shaped recess 33 conforming to and adapted to receive the U-shaped projection 25 of the chair seat, Fig. 6. The forward ends of the recess 33 have a downwardly inclined surface 34 adapted to engage the surface 29 of the projection 25 so that when the chair top is down upon the seat rearward tilt of the chair top is prohibited. Upon engaging the chair top over the projection, the inclined faces 34 of the chair top recess 33 are first engaged with the surfaces 29 on the front ends of the side portions 26 of the projection 25 and then the chair top is pushed backwardly and downwardly into place so that the recess receives the inclined rear portion 21 of the projection 25, Fig. '7.
The lower portion of the seat back 32 is de pressed to allow the recess 33 to be inclined at the rear to accommodate the inclined rear portion 21 of the U-shaped projection, Fig. 9.
In the rear portion 21 of the projection 25 there is a slot 35 midway across the portion 21 Fig. 10. This slot 35 is adapted to receive a securing lug 36 on a pivoted latch 31 lying within a recess 38 in the back of the chair top, Fig. 10. This latch 31 has trunnions 39 adapted to fit in half-circular sockets 4| at opposite sides of the recess. In order to locate the latch 31 within the recess and to place the trunnions 39 in their sockets 4|, there is a removable plate 42 adapted to be taken from the rear of the seat, Fig. 12. Once the latch has been dropped down into the recess 38, the plate 42 is secured in place by screWs'eXtending through holes 43 at opposite sides of the plate. Upon the inner face of the plate 42 are projections 44 and 45 having halfcircular sockets 46 aligned with the half-circular sockets 4| and adapted to fit over half of the trunnions 39 so as to complete the journal connection of the trunnions with the back of the chair top.
In order to urge the lug 36 on the latch into the slot 35, there is provided a leaf spring 41 on the rear face of the latch adapted to cooperate with the rear inner face of the removable plate 42. On the upper end of the latch 31 there is a button projection 48 adapted to extend through a hole 49 in the removable plate 42. When it is desired to release the chair top from the projection, the button 48 is depressed against the action of the leaf spring 41 to disengage the lug 36 from the slot 35.
This chair top is made on its bottom edge to be smooth so that it can be safely located on a bed when removed from the chair seat and used as a bed rest. The rear part is preferably upholstered but the arms and the bottom may be made of metal or plastic. The latch is well confined within the recess 33 so as not to hinder the use of the rest upon the bed; The recess 33 is of such size as to easily accommodate the projection 25. 7
By being inclined at the rear the removal and insertion of the chair top is facilitated.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described m invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

the portions of the recess within the chair top having an inclined face adapted for retaining engagement with the inclined edge of the projection, whereby the chair top when fixed in place upon the seat is automatically retained against rearward tilting movement with respect thereto.
2. A chair of a type having a removable chair top adapted for use as a bed rest when removed from a chair seat comprising a chair seat having a projection extending from the seat surface thereof, a chair top having a recess in the bottom conforming to the shape of the projection on the chair seat, releasable means for securing the chair top when in place upon the seat projection, said chair top being adapted when removed from the chair seat to serve as a bed rest, said seat projection being U-shaped and having side portions and a rear portion, the forward ends of said side portions of the projection having a downwardly and rearwardly inclined engaging edge, the portions of the recess within the chair top having an inclined face adapted for retaining engagement with the inclined edge of the projection, whereby the chair top when fixed in place upon the seat is automatically retained against rearward tilting movement with respect thereto, and said releasable means including a latch confined within the rear portion of the top recess vertically removed from the bottom face of the chair top and adapted to engage with the rear portion of the seat projection to retain the chair top against forward tilting movement when the chair top is in flush engagement with the chair seat.
3. A chair of a type having a removable chair top adapted for use as a bed rest when removed from a chair seat comprising a chair seat having a projection extending from the seat surface thereof, a chair top having a recess in the bottom conforming to the shape of the projection on the chair seat, releasable means for securing the chair top when in place upon the seat projection, said chair top being adapted when removed from the chair seat to serve as a bed rest, said seat projection being U-shaped and having side portions and a rear portion, the forward ends of said side portions of the projection having a downwardly and rearwardly inclined engaging edge, the portions of the recess within. the chair top having an inclined face adapted for retaining engagement with the inclined edge of the projection, whereby the chair top when fixed in place upon the seat is automatically retained against rearward tilting movement with respect thereto, and the rear portion of the seat projection slightly inclined forwardly and an amount substantially less than the inclination of the engaging edges of the side portions where by to facilitate the attachment and detachment of the chair top with the seat projection.
4. A chair of a type having a removable chair top adapted for use as a bed rest when removed from a chair seat comprising a chair seat having a projection extending from the seat surface thereof, a chair top having a recess in the bottom conforming to the shape of the projection on the chair seat, releasable means for securing the chair top when in place upon the seat projection, said chair top being adapted when removed from the chair seat to serve as a bed rest, said seat projection being U-shaped and having side portions and a rear portion, the forward ends of said side portions of the projection having a downwardly and rearwardly inclined engaging edge, the portions of the recess within the chair top having an inclined face adapted for retaining engagement with the inclined edge of the projection, whereby the chair top when fixed in place upon the seat is automatically retained against rearward tilting movement with respect thereto, and. the rear portion of the seat projection slightly inclined forwardly and an amount substantially less than the inclination of the engaging edges of the side portions whereby to facilitate the attachment and detachment of the chair top with the seat projection, and said chair top having its lower portion depressed to permit the rear portion of the recess to be inclined to accommodate the inclined rear portion of the projection.
5. A chair comprising a base having a top seat portion, a projection formed on said top seat portion and having forwardly extending portions projected along the sides of said seat portion, and a chair top comprising a back and forwardly extending side arms formed in its bottom face with a recess into which said projection engages, said forwardly extending portions of said projection having their front ends inclined forwardly and upwardly and engageable with complementary walls defining portions of the recesses in said chair top whereby rearward pressures against the back of said chair top will cause said complementary walls of said chair top to slide downwards on the forwardly and upwardly inclined ends of said forwardly extending portion of said projections and securely hold said chair top in position on said base.
