2 Claims.

This invention relates to an improved chair construction. It has for its object the provision of a chair having a multiple-unit frame of tubular material which may be of metal or plastic and which is at once strong, economical to manufacture and attractive in appearance.

In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention there is provided a multiple-unit frame of metal tubular material including a U- shaped base or foot and a seat supportin portion which may be integral with the U-shaped base. A vertically disposed U-shaped member supports the back rest at its open end portion and is affixed at its closed end to the closed end portion of the U-shaped base and at an intermediate point thereof to the seat. In this way the vertically disposed U-shaped member supports and restrains both the back rest and the rear portion of the seat.

The improved construction of theinvention lends itself readily to use for chairs of various sizes and heights, including table and so-called bar chairs.

The invention will be understood by reference to the following detailed description thereof and to the accompanying drawings in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a bar chair;

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a table chair; and

Fig. 3 shows the multiple-unit frame of the chair of Fig. l and means of affixing the units thereof to one another, and to the seat and back rest.

Referring now to the drawings, there is provided a metal tubular member H, bent and shaped to form a U-shaped floor-engaging base or foot |2 having opposite parallel side portions l3 and a straight transverse or connecting portion I4. The side portions l3 extend upwardly and then rearwardly to form front legs I5 and to provide a seat supporting portion. If desired, a transverse bracing member l6 (Figs. 1 and 3) may be added.

7 The base l2 and the legs |5 need not be integrally formed, but may be constructed in sections and joined to provide a unitary structure. For example, two oppositely disposed L-shaped mem bers may be employed to provide a U-shaped base. The legs may or may not be integral therewith.

A seat 20 (Figs. 1 and 2) is arranged on the seat supporting portion 21. The seat may comprise a frame, a padding, and a covering therefor. For example, Fig. 1 shows a wooden seat boxing 2| having side sections 22, front section 23, rear section 24 and seat bottom 25. Suitable padding and a seat covering 26-indicated by the dotted lines-may be applied thereto. The seat bottom 25 and side sections 22 of the seat bOXiIlg are aflixed to the seat supporting portion 2'|shown more clearly in Fig. 3-by screws 28.

A modified seat assembly is shown in Fig. 2. The legs l5 in this modification extend to form a U-shaped frame 30 having side portions 3| and rear transverse portion 32. A seat bottom 33 is secured by screws 34 passing through holes in the seat frame 30. The side and rear edges 36, 31, of the seat bottom 33 are provided with grooves adapted to receive the side and rear portions 3|, 32, of the seat frame 30 so that when assembled, the seat edges are flat.

In accordance with the invention, there is provided a tubular U-shaped member 40, the closed end thereof 4| being ailixed to the closed end portion M of the base 2, as by screws 42. The opposite sides 43 are affixed to the rear portion of the seat assembly (24 in Fig. 1, 32 in Fig. 2) for example, with screws 44. The open end of the U-shaped member 40 provides means for supportin the back rest 50 which may be affixed thereto, as by screws 53. The back rest 50 comprises a suitable frame 5| which may be padded and covered as shown by the broken lines 52.

It is to be observed that in the preferred embodiment of the invention the principal units of the multiple-unit frame are the two U-shaped members providing the base or foot and the support for the back rest, respectively. These two units are affixed one to the other at their closed ends. Minor changes may be made in the arrangements as illustrated and described without departing from the invention as defined in the accompanying claims.

I claim:

1. A chair having a seat, a back rest and a twounit frame, said frame including a first unit comprising a U-shaped floor-engaging base having opposite substantially parallel side portions connected by an integral transverse straight portion, vertically disposed front legs extending from said base side portions, seat-supporting portions disposed parallel said base side portions, a second unit comprising a second U-shaped member substantially narrower than said first U-shaped floor-engaging base, said second U-shaped member being vertically disposed and affixed at its closed end to the transverse portion of said base centrally thereof, said second member being affixed to said seat and to said back rest, whereby both the seat and the back rest are supported and restrained by the vertically disposed U- shaped member.

A chair having a seat, a back rest and a twounit frame, said frame including a first unit comprising a U-shaped floor-engaging base having opposite substantially parallel side portions connected by an integral transverse straight portion, vertically disposed front legs extending from said base side portions, seat-supporting portions disposed parallel said base side portions, said base, legs and seat-supporting portions being integral, a second unit comprising a second U-shaped member substantially narrower than said first U-shaped floor-engaging base, said second U-shaped member being vertically disposed 15 2,461,055
