UNITE TATE S.
JAMES KING AND JONATHAN H.
KING, OF SWAN GREEK, ILLINOIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,783, dated December 4, 1877 application filed October 15,1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES M. KING and J 'ONATHAN H. KING, of Swan Creek, in the county of WVarren and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-BodyEnd-Gates and Scoop-Boards and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and-to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
()ur invention relates to an improved construction of the end-gates of wagons intended for the transportation of grain in bulk, or of such other articles or material as is liable to fall out of the wagon on the removal or lowering of the end-gate for the purpose of un loading it with a shovel or' scoop.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of the rear end of a wagon-body with our improved device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device detached from the wagonbody. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the device with the end-board secured in vertical position. Fig. 4 is a similar view with the endboard turned down to form a scoop-board.
Referring to the parts by letters, A Arepresent the side-boards of a wagon-body, having at their rear ends and on their inner sides vertical slats ac, two on each side, arranged with a space between them, so as to form a be securely attached to the wagon-body.
B B are the side-boards of the device, tri angular in form, or nearly so, as clearly shown by the drawings. The tongues I) I) project from their outer sides, and on their inner sides at the bottom horizontal slats or projecting ledges b b are formed, or otherwise secured thereto. The side-boards B are also connected together D is a board or gate, which fits between the side-boards B B, and is hinged to the rod 0, as shown at (I, so as to turn thereon, and be moved up or down, as desired. When moved to a vertical position, and secured by the hooks and staples e f, or by anyother convenient fastening device, it operates as an ordinary hinged end-gate for the wagon.
When moved down to a horizontal position,
or preferably to the inclined position shown by Fig. 4 of the drawings, it is supported by stituted therefor, without change in the construction of either device.
Having thus described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The sideboards B B, having the ledges b b, operating in combination with the hinged end-gate D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The side-boards B B, united by bracerods 0 G, and having the tongues 12 b operat-' ing in combination with the hinged gate I) and wagon-body A, having the slats a a, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES M. KING. JONATHAN HFKING.
Witnesses V THOMAS McKnn, W. B. RICHARDS.
