Applicatien Atigiist 11, 1947, Serial No. 767914 1 'Ihpresent invention relates to new and usefill improvements in door checks and more per ticiilarly to a combined door check and closer embodying means whereby the door is closed by a pullingaction.
Heretofore it has been the usual practice to provide door checksand closers which exerta pushing force on the door which have a tendei'iy tccaus'e the door to close rapidly during its initial closing action and then abruptly stopping, and which subjects the hinges to a severe strain and frequently results in damage to the dor'proper.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present in-; vention to provide a combined door check and closer which exerts a pulling-closing action'on the door and which is constant throughout its entire closin movement. V
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical con struction, which is efficient and reliable in 015- eratioh, neat and attractive in appearanc'e rela tively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the combined door check and closer mounted in positioiion a door; A
Figure 2 is a top plan view on a reducedscale;
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view; i
Figures 4 to '7, inclusive,- are transverse sectional views taken respectively on the lines 44, 5-5, 6-6 and 'l'! of Figure 3; and
Figure 8 is an enlarged group perspective view of the piston, check plate and cage therefor.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a cylinder which is closed at one end and provided with a cap threaded On its opposite end.
A vertical pivot pin 1 rises from the top of the closed end of the cylinder and which is pivotally held in an attaching plate 3 for horizontal swinging movement of the cylinder 5.
A cylindrical reservoir 9 is supported in a longitudinally extended position on top of the cylinder 5 by means of a boss 10 at one end of the reservoir and a neck l at its oppesiteend which provides eornmunication for the rear end of the cylinder '5 with the reservoir. The top or the reservoir is provided with a vent opening 12:
A piston rod 53 is slidably mounted in a neck I l carried by the cap-e and a packing glarid lfi is threaded'on the neck to seal the-pistcn red;
A piston it is integrally formed with the an ner end of the rod l3 and has a workin fit in the cylinder 5. A plurality of apertures! 1' are formed in the piston and over which a substantially clover leaf check plate It is held in position by a cage 19 suitably secured to piston 16. The check plate is providedwith openingsifl aligned. with the openings l! and of a diameter or size substantially less than the openings W.
The cagelg includes leg portionsfll positioned between the projections of the check plate-to prevent rotation of the check plate thus keep the openings 26 in alignment with the openings l1. i
A bracket 22 is clamped to the outer portion of the piston rod I3 and includes laterally pro jecting arms 23, to the ends of which'the rear end of coil springs 24 are'hooked'thefront ends of the springs being attached to hooks 25 see-urea to the opposite sides of the cylinder ii-adjacent its fi'c'ant end; the springs exerting an influence on the piston and pisto'niodto rndve the piston iiiwardl'y'toward the "front end ofth'e cylinder;
QArubbe-r cushion 26 is secured to the inner side of the cap 6 for contactby thepiston [6 during the outward movement of the piston rod to reduce shock.
The rear end of the Piston rod it is formed,
with an opening 21 through which a pin 23 car:
ried by an attachinghracket 29isinserted'to pro:
vid a pivotal connection for the rear end or the piston rod.
In the operation of the device, the attaching plate 8 is secured to the under side of a door frame 30 while the bracket 29 is secured to a door 3|. The plate 8 is attached to the door frame adjacent the hinged edge of the door, and accordingly, during opening movement of the door, the piston rod [3 and piston 16 are moved outwardly and liquid, such as oil or the like contained in the cylinder 5 is partially forced into the reservoir 9 through the neck H and the remainder passing through the openings I! behind the piston. During rearward movement of the piston, the check plate [8 moves away from the piston to prevent obstruction of the passage of fluid to the front end of the cylinder.
The opening of the door is thus not restricted or retarded by the door check and closer except by the placing of the springs 24 under tension.
When the door is released, the springs will exert their influence on the door to close the same by a pulling action on the door, the closing movement of the door moving the piston and piston rod inwardly. The check plate I8 is then moved against the piston it to substantially close the openings l1, and the relatively small openings 26 in the check plate allow the liquid to slowly pass to the rear end of the chamber to thus retard the closing of the door at a uniform closing speed.
The size of the openings 2t determines the speed of the closing movement of the door.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the appended claims.
