Abstract

1,252,757. Spring action hinge closer for doors etc. TOOLS Ltd. N.V. 31 March, 1969 [9 April, 1968; 19 July, 1968], Nos. 16939/68 and 34527/68. Heading E2M. A door closer unit comprises a concealed hinge 1 having a pair of body portions 2, 3, a pair of pins 4 movable in grooves in respective body portions and links 6 linking each. pin to an opposite body portion; a cylinder 100 fixed to one body portion 2 and divided into two chambers 101, 102; a damper unit 15 including a piston 16 slidable in one chamber 102 and connected to the pin 4 of body portion 2; and resilient means 5 in the other chamber 101 which, on opening of the hinge 1, is compressed towards the body portion 2, and tends to return the pin 4 to its initial position whenever the hinge is not fully closed. The resilient means 5 may comprise a helical spring 7 alone or in combination with a cylindrical polyurethane buffer, and is compressed by a head 9 of a rod 10 extending axially through the spring and connected to the pin 4, the piston rod 14 being secured to the head 9. Alternatively, the resilient means may comprise compressed air. The piston head 16 includes a flapper valve 17 for escape of fluid in the damper unit 15 during the hinge opening movement, which valve closes during the hinge closing movement and fluid passes instead through an aperture 18 containing an adjustable screw 19 to regulate the closing rate.
