IINrrEn STATES PATENT @nrrcn.
FRANKLIN A. SMITH, JR, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE WV. PRENTIOE, OF SAME PLACE.
FASTENING FOR WEARING-APPAREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,893, dated November 1, 1881.
Application filed June 21, 1881.
T all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, FRANKLIN A. SMITH, Jrz, acitizeu of the United States, residing atProvideuce, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Wearing-Apparel; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable [0 others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved means for fastening gloves, shoes, or other articles of wearing-apparel; and it consists of a bar or lever formed of wire or blanks cut from sheet metal, having its ful- 2o crum at or near one end, and which is adapted to be fastened or pivoted to any desired article of wearing-apparel by means of an eyelet, rivet, or other similar means, whereby the said lever may revolve or turn upon its axis, one
end of said lever being provided with a knob, hook, or curve adapted to readily enter the button-hole upon the opposite side of the article to be fastened together and to then turn upon its axis to draw the two edges together 0 and hold them in place, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents atopplan view of my invention as applied to the 5 wrist-opening of a glove; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the fastener; and Figs. 3 and 4, modifications of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the bar or lever, which may be formed of wire bent into the proper shape, or of blanks cut from sheet metal, said lever being pivoted at or near one end (or at its center, as may be deemed 5 most preferable) to the article of wearing-apparel by means of an eyelet, rivet, or other similar means which will readily permit of the lever revolving upon its axis. At one end of the lever is provided a knob, hook, or curve,
0 B, which is adapted to readily enter the button-hole in the opposite portion of the article of wearing-apparel, and to be turned around to draw the two edges together and hold them securely in place. At the opposite end of the (No model.)
lever A is formed a projecting knob or curve, O, which is adapted to enter the button-hole when the article is fastened together to prevent the lever from being easily turned around. The lever is also provided with a raised portion or offset, D, nearits axis, so that the ma- 6o terial will lie flat when fastened and present a neat and smooth appearance, and also prevent the device from catching into other articles it may come in contact with.
As already stated, the lever A may be pivoted at its center, in which case each end is provided with a knob, hook, or curve, as shown in Fig. 4, either of which is adapted to readily enter the button-hole to fasten the two edges together.
The construction of my invention being as described, it will be observed that in fastening the edges or openings in wearing-apparel the knob, hook, or curve upon the outer end of the lever A enters the button-hole, and being then turned around upon its pivot, draws the two edges together and holds them securely in place.
By means of my improved device I am enabled to furnish a novel and simplified'form of fastening adapted for fastening all articles of wearing-apparel in the quickest and most secure manner, and capable of being as readily unl'astened.
1 am aware of the patent granted to Lewis H. Parker under date of June 25, 1878, and numbered 205,207, in which a wire loop provided with a knob at one end is employed as a button-fastener, and I do not therefore desire to be understood as claiming such a con- 0 struction; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described fastening device for wearing- 5 apparel consisting of the lever A, provided with a handle at one end and with a curve or hook, O, at the opposite end, said lever being adapted to be pivoted to one side of the article of wearing-apparel by means of an eyelet or rivet, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANKLIN AUGUSTUS SMITH, .lIt.
