Description

G-., W. PRENTICE.
Combined Laoing Stud and-Button Fastener.
No. 243,400. Patented June 28,1881.
INVENTOR 2x3 ukxv ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. PRENTIOE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
COMBINED LACING-STUD AND BUTTON-FAST ENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,400, dated June 28, 1881.
Application filed May 2, 1881.
To all whom ti may concern: I
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PRENTIOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Im provementsin Combined Lacin g-Stud and Button-Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica tion.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved lacing-stud and button-fastener combined, designed for use on articles of wearing-apparel, but more particularly for gloves; and it consists of a fastening device provided with an open head or loop and double-curved neck attached to suitable fastenin g-prongs, the whole being formed of strips of round, halfround, or other suitable shaped wire, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and point.- ed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention as adapted for use as a button-fastener, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device as adapted for use as a lacing-stud.-
Similarletters ofreferenoe i ndicate like parts in both figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the complete device, which is preferably formed of strips of round wire bent at the center, so as to provide a loop or open head, B, havinga doublecurved neck, 0, terminating with front and rear pron gs,-a a bent downwardly and at right angles to said curved neck, as shown in the drawings. Between the double curved neck 0 is provided a small space, I), which communicates with the opening a in the center of the loop or head B, whereby, when the device is intended for use as a button-fastener, the shank of an ordinary button can be slipped over either of the prongs and then pushed up- (No model.)
ward through the said space b between the double-curved neck into the opening 0 in the loop or head B, thereby holding the button securelyto the same. The device thus arranged can then be attached to wearing-apparel or gloves by a suitable setting-instrument in a manner well known.
The double-curved neck U, being formed of rounded wire, presents smooth edges to prevent friction upon the lacing-strings when used as a lacing hook or stud, the lacingstrings used in connection therewith passing around said curved neck on either side under the projecting loop or head B, Where they are held in place, as in the usual manner. The lacin gstrin gs, however, may be passed through the opening 0 in the loop or head B, instead of passing around the curved neck.
By means of my present improvements I am enabled to furnish a fastening device which can be readily adapted for use either as a button-fastener or lacing-stud, and which can be produced at a very small cost, with no waste of the stock employed in its manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described lacing-stud and buttonfastener combined, consisting of the head or loop portion B, having central eye, a, curved neck G, having central opening or slot, 1), and provided with the prongs a a, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a combined lacing-stud and buttonfastener, the fastening device A, consisting of the head B, having opening 0, and curved neck 0, having space I), and prongs a a, adapted to receive and retain the shank of an ordinary button, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. W. PRENTIOE.
