NITED STATES PATENT FFI'CE.
JACOB BE'TTS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SUSPENDER-END.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,394, dated OCtO'ber 18, 1881.
Application filed August 11, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB Bnrr'rs, a citizen ofAust-ria, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Suspender-Ends, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of the attaching-piece ot' suspender-ends; and it consists in an attaching-piece formed of a flat sheet-metal tube, which is provided with detaining-teeth on both its lower and vertical edges adapted to grasp the end inserted in the tube, and with a closing lip or lips on its upper edge for hiding the upper extremities of the end. The sheet-metal tube is also provided with barbs in the body thereof, adapted, like the teeth, to grasp the end inserted in the tube.
This invention 'is illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side View; Fig.2, a longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a cross-section; Fig. 4, a top-end view; Fig. 5, a bottom-end view.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letterA designates the body of the sheetmetal tube composing the attaching-piece; b 0, its teeth; (1, the lips, and e the barbs thereof. The tu beAis fiat and diverges toward its lower edge, like the ordinary attaching-piece of suspender-ends, and it is moreover formed with a hook,f, or an eye or other device for hanging the whole upon the buckle of a suspender. The teeth I) are on the lower edge of the tube, those on one side alternating with those on the opposite side thereof, and the teeth 0 are on the vertical edges of the tube, while the lips 01 are on its upper edge, and the barbs e in the body thereof. The teeth I) c, as well as the barbs e, have sharp points, and the upper portion of the suspender-end, having been inserted in the tube, the latter is compressed thereon, whereby the teeth and barbs are made to grasp the end, thus firmlyholdingitin place.
The barbs e are struck up in the body of the tube in a suitable manner, and may be formed either before or after the endis inserted therein. The lips d are two in number, and are of suitable shape to close the upper end of the tube. so that by their means the upper extremities of the suspender-end are effectually hidden from view, which is important, since such extremities usually are raw-edged, and, if visible, impart to the article an unfinished appearance.
It is obvious that the purpose of the lips d can be accomplished by a single lip.
I do not claim an attaching piece for suspender-ends consisting of a sheet-metal blank bent to form sockets, the body portions of which are furnished with barbs which are pressed inward to bite the Suspender-ends within the sockets; nor do I broadly claim an attaching-piece for suspender-ends consisting ofa plate having wings to clasp around the su'spender-ends, the vertical adjacent edges of said wings being furnished with teeth for engaging the suspender-ends; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An attaching-piece for suspender ends consisting of a flattened sheet-metal tube, A, formed with the laterally-bent lip or lips d at its top for closing the upper end of the tube, the inwardly-projecting teeth Z) I), on opposite sides of its bottom edge, and the inwardly-projecting teeth 0 0 along its vertical adjacent edges, all substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB BETTS.
